Quote from: Ron Boerger on March 12, 2024, 07:56:07 AMCentenary played John Melvin twice last year and beat them 57-0 and 23-6 as a JV program.  If this schedule is true, I can't imagine UMHB will get anything out of playing them other than getting every healthy player in the program into the game, and the same goes for Westgate Christian, definitely not NAIA, who are playing their first season of football in 2024 (according to their Xitter feed).  From what can be gleaned from the school's website, they are an online-only institution with a "convenient, open-enrollment system [that] allows you to begin your courses right away."

Good grief.

Surely there must have been some crossed signals on this, and somehow some scrimmage opponents were listed with the actual opponents. I know it's hard for UMHB to find teams willing to play them, but if Harmon has sunk to scheduling the equivalents of University of Phoenix or DeVry, he would appear to be more clueless in his off the field duties than he has been as a HC. Hopefully this is a false alarm.

Ehh, it makes a certain amount of sense with only 4 teams in the conference. The chances of a 2nd asc team making the playoffs are slim to none so just win to get in so why spend a bunch of money either flying to another team or paying someone 20k to come play you?

Tinfoil hat, but maybe pressure is coming from above to reduce spending? I mean there has to be a reason they're not sending our folks to broadcast away games anymore...

That's the thing though, if we are flying to Wisconsin AND Tennessee we are not in save money mode, I would say we are in we will play anyone that says Yes mode. Maybe I am dumb but I refuse to believe that Coach Harmon or anyone at UMHB would have played UW-RF (there with no return game), Trinity (there with no return game), UWW (Twice), a top 10 NAIA school (there, who knows if they are coming here in 2025) and two very random schools unless they basically had no other choices.

Also in terms of recruiting, all things are cured by winning. If we win the ASC and go a couple rounds deep in the playoffs, we will tell recruits that if you come to UMHB you have a shot at a title and get to crisscross the country on charter flights in the regular season like D1 kids get to and they will sign up. As for the chance of destroying John Melvin and Westgate, is that really much different than the many many times we have killed ASC opponents?
It actually is a lot different. Other schools' JV teams routinely beat John Melvin (essentially a JV team itself), and Westgate is basically an intramural team that plays intramural teams from other online "schools". These are the kinds of teams that Austin College would beat by 50, and UMHB might hang 80 on by halftime.

Admittedly this is not a good defense but no one has routinely beat John Melvin or Westgate because they appear to have started football 5 minutes ago. I would understand the gripe if we only had 2 non conference games and these two schools were what we picked but that does not appear to be the case.

This reminds me of the barnstorming days of Wesley College when they were Independent. In 2014 they played at Concordia-Selma, a school in Alabama that has since closed, winning 54-0, followed that by playing at Menlo College in California winning 70-2, Menlo shut the football program down that off season. Next came Virginia-Lynchburg an unaccredited college that had only recently brought back football winning 75-12 and capped a rough 4 games stretch playing College of Faith winning 62-0 and the only information I could provide about them is links to stories doubting their legitimacy as a school.

Wesley College best I can tell only had 5 D3 games that year (some solid games though), got into the playoffs via Pool B, eventually got 3 home playoff games before losing to Mount Union in the National Semifinals.

Do I think this is what Coach Drass and the Wesley folks wanted, no, but they did what they had to do to get 10 games on the schedule.

Catching up on the (alleged) schedule "leak". I'm going to withhold any real strong opinion until I see something official come out but if that's anywhere close to what our non-con is going to look like I'm going to be in shock, things are getting kind of weird lol.

Might as well schedule Bishop Sycamore on our bye week at this rate  ;)

ETBU has released their schedule. Facing the Crusaders in Belton on October 5th and in Marshall on November 2. Looks like they're playing Westgate Christian too.

Kind of makes you wonder if the ASC is trying to get Westgate Christian to join.  A few years back when NAU started their program I was kind of hoping the ASC would try and lure them in.  Instead, they ended up going NAIA...

Interesting idea. At this point I'd be happy to have them if they're interested in transitioning to the NCAA. John Melvin too since they're also currently unaffiliated and could decide to go NCAA. That may be the last chance to save the ASC.

Also regarding John Melvin, after a little more digging, it appears there's a reason none of us has heard of that program. The school just opened back in 2022. Similar to Centenary, they played a hybrid schedule against JV, JUCO, and prep school teams in 2023 (part of the reason why I initially thought they were a JUCO or prep school), and 2024 will be their first season of varsity football.

Westgate Christian is a totally remote school that has no other sports (they have a track coach listed on their rudimentary athletics site but I've seen no evidence of a team).  I don't know of any fully remote school in all the NCAA.

Not to mention they'd have to start a heck of a lot more sports programs to be eligible for D3....

Birmingham Southern has opening weekend available if anyone needs a game that weekend.

Nothing official from UMHB yet, but sources tell Cory Hogue of DCTF that it will be a
co-defensive coordinator situation next season. Mark Carey moves up to co-DC and will coach LBs. Jordan Collins, from ETBU, is set to take over the D-Line in addition to serving as co-DC.

I totally didn't make that connection as to ETBU's DC coming over to UMHB and several All-ASC players transferring to UMHB from ETBU...

Guess we have one confirmed game since UWW posted their schedule and the Cru will be at Whitewater on September 21st.

One interesting thing is I was basically counting that day as the day we would be playing Bethel. When all this news started coming out I did some research and they had already released some of their schedule and specifically said they were looking for a game on September 21st so either that changed or something is off.

Where are you seeing that UWW has posted their schedule?  I've looked on Twitter and on the UWW website, and nothing has been posted.  We just know our non-conference opponents, just not dates.

Are we talking Bethel College (Kansas) or Bethel University (Minnesota)?  The one posted earlier was College which is the Kansas NAIA school.  Pretty sure we had a TE grad transfer to UMHB a few years back from the one in Kansas...

The original post said Bethel College but then listed McKenzie, Tennessee which is Bethel University just not the D3 version in Minnesota.
