Trine is your 2024 NCAA DIII National Champions!!  #13 Trine 69 #1 Hampden-Sydney 61.

Game was big time, what a crowd and atmosphere, Trine fans really showed out, it was crazy loud.  HSC also had a nice contingent and very vocal crowd. Attendance was 4546 which broke the DIII record for a championship game.  Trine struggled with the Tigers defense in the first half, had a couple big scoring droughts where it was tough to find any good looks at the basket.  HSC went up 17-8 and it didn't look good.  We finally got some shots to drop and went on a 15-2 scoring run to go up by four 23-19 before the Tigers scored the last 6 points to lead  25-23 at halftime.  Adam Brazil with 4 3-pointers to lead HSC with 12 points at the break.

Cortez Garland scored Trine's first 7 points of the second half and we went up 30-25 before HSC hit the scoring column.  We continued to gain confidence breaking down HSC's terrific defense and getting some better looks at the basket.  We kept the Tigers at arm's length for most of the second half as they never re-gained the lead.  Cortez, with 18 in the half, led the Thunder in scoring with 22 and was voted the Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four.  Aiden Smylie and Nate Tucker also with huge contributions tonight with 12 and 13 points respectively, they also garnered spots on the all-tournament team.  We shot over 50% from the field in the second half and also had a good night at the FT line making 22-25.

Brazil with 23 points to lead all scorers, but we defended him much better the second half as he was only 2-13 after the break.  We did a great job against their all-american forward Hubbard, limited him to 7 points in the game.

What a ride this has been.  Made this old man shed a tear or two of joy tonight.  :'(

Quote from: Greek Tragedy on March 16, 2024, 07:59:43 PMSo is everyone eligible to come back next year for Trine? I believe Trent Cox is done, right? I know Cortez transferred, but I don't know how many years he played at Albion.

Both Brent Cox and Cortez Garland were 5th year seniors, they are the only 2 who don't have remaining eligibility.
Emmanuel Megnanglo and Cameron Awls are 4 year seniors, but I don't look for either one to come back for a 5th year.  They both participated on senior day.

These guys will be back next season...maybe...you never know with the transfer portal:

Name/ 2024-25 Class

Fred Garland - Sr (was listed as a junior on the roster, if he comes back it will be his last eligible year)
Aidan Smylie - Sr
Drew Moore - Sr
Grant Pahl - Sr
Ryan Preston - Sr
Nate Tucker - Jr
Logan McKenzie - Jr
Hayden Jones - Jr (was injured most of second half of season)
Logan Gard - Jr (was out all year with injury)
Evan Lumbrezer - Jr (split time on JV/Varsity)
Drew Cwik - Jr (JV as soph, dressed a couple times on varsity)
Colin Shriver - Jr (JV as soph, dressed a couple times on varsity)
Jayce Cusack - Soph

There could be a couple Freshman on this year's Trine JV who might contribute next year.  Trine's JV went undefeated in their season.

The rumor I heard this weekend was that Megnanglo would be coming back to Trine.

Congrats to you and to your team on which you have so faithfully supported, TU Angola. This season, including that miracle comeback win against Platteville (which is surely thinking this weekend that they could have hoisted that trophy), will be something to celebrate and savor for a long time.

And congrats to the MIAA for having a national championship team, and to Hope and Calvin and Olivet for having the firepower to defeat a national champion caliber team.

We've all appreciated your reporting on TU men's and women's BB, and look forward to more in the year to come.

Does anyone know where I can find a link to a video reply of last nights game?  If so let me know.  I've checked CBSSports and YouTube with no luck.

Thanks!

NCAA has full replays of the semi-final games posted here:

I assume the final will eventually find its way here.

Major congrats to Trine!  As a Randolph-Macon alum and ODAC fan, I was obviously pulling for HSC.  But, if an ODAC team can't win, I'm very glad it was Trine.  I have a lot of respect for their program and coach.  In the 2020-21 Covid season, Trine graciously came to Virginia to play R-MC for a #1 vs #2 to end the season.

A great program and coach, so again, congrats!

Figured I would take a look at how our "recruit" list (incoming FR and transfers) prior to this season panned out.  So here is a list for each school, and what percentage of their minutes, points, rebounds, and assists came from those players:

Team   Incoming   Recruits    Minutes    Points    Rebounds     Assists
Adrian   FR  60.3020.33   0.289 0.26
---   ---  ---------   --- ---
Albion   FR  60.1470.147   0.148 0.182
---   ---  ---------   --- ---
Alma   FR  60.1310.118   0.076 0.066
---   ---  ---------   --- ---
Calvin   FR  20.0660.065   0.034 0.092
Transfer  20.0620.05   0.053 0.037
All  40.1280.115   0.087 0.129
---   ---  ---------   --- ---
Hope   FR  30.1240.079   0.125 0.128
Transfer  10.0590.057   0.033 0.028
All  40.1830.136   0.158 0.156
---   ---  ---------   --- ---
Kalamazoo   FR  30.120.109   0.116 0.051
Transfer  10.0190.016   0.018 0.011
All  40.140.125   0.134 0.062
---   ---  ---------   --- ---
Olivet   FR  70.4640.469   0.489 0.343
Transfer  10.0030.003   0.001 0.003
All  80.4670.472   0.49 0.346
---   ---  ---------   --- ---
Trine   FR  10.0210.006   0.027 0.016
Transfer  30.3860.464   0.223 0.444
All  40.4070.47   0.25 0.461

Some significant numbers there and varying significantly between the really young teams with lots of FR contributing (Adrian and Olivet) and Trine with the transfers.

So, Holland beats #6 Calvin and #1 Trine in the MIAA tournament, loses to #11 Case Western in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament, and drops three spots? I'd like to see Holland O'fer for a season, and I think that's ridiculous.

Yes, though one might have expected that Hope's late-season wins over Calvin and Trine, followed by Calvin's tournament run and Trine's national championship (plus Hope's unexpectedly easy win in the NCAA first round), might have strengthened Hope's resume. But at this point it hardly matters, and ending the season well with a top 25 finish defines success, and hopes for more success to come.
