Sure, if he had actually given the kid the car. If they're going say that letting someone borrow it to go look for a job is an "illegal benefit", then they might as well start penalizing teams when the coaches give their players words of encouragement. Afterall, they confer a "benefit" as well.  ;D

Bottom line is, if the NCAA did even the slightest bit if due diligence, they could easily dig up 100x worse at most of the top programs. The reality is, they decided to make an example of an 'outsider' program that was starting to take over where once the eastern and midwestern programs dominated. This despite the fact that they tried to do the right thing by self-reporting, despite the fact that it was a minor "infraction" that they could have easily covered up. Again, this tells you all you need to know about the NCAA's deferential enforcement of it's rules.

I think you drastically underestimate what "the slightest bit of due diligence" gets you spread across more than 400 schools and thousands of sports programs.

you've convinced me.  UMHB just simply got too good, the other D3 football programs had to cry to the NCAA to stop them.  It all makes complete sense.  All of the other programs that had similar, or better on-field success than UMHB were from the East or Midwest!!!!  The NCAA has to learn a lesson, I think that Pat (and anyone within 500 miles, flights are pricey) will join me in storming the NCAA offices next week to hoist a UMHB flag up.  This geographical bias must be stopped!!!!

I'm glad you've seen the light. Now go troll somewhere else. Nobody here likes you.

D3FanBoy, I've always viewed your comments on here with a light heart and some are obviously intentionally humorous or meant to stir the pot. I'm okay with that, makes things entertaining & even more so when our schools are playing each other.

With that being said, I have to believe that the "vacated" 2016 title that gets brought up from time to time as a jab has to be just that. It doesn't change the result on the field in 2016. We could argue wether the NCAA was correct in it's decision to state a violation (I personally think it was a bit heavy handed, but it's not the first time we've seen the NCAA flex it's power muscle for power's sake).

Point being, the NCAA's ruling doesn't change 99.9% of D3 football fans view on who won the national title in 2016. Even if it's used as a jab between fans from time to time. Reggie Bush bought his mom a house for God's sake and the majority of CFB fans believe he is still the heisman trophy winner, lol.

Personally, I don't think the NCAA really cares where a team is located other than for post season travel. They don't care where a powerhouse team is located. Vacating a title after the fact does not erase any travel expenses already incurred. Nor does it impact travel in future seasons. I do believe the NCAA was a bit harsh in the penalty. But I don't see it as being driven by geography. I can't follow that logic.

As I said, the suggestion is not that the vacated title and the unfair playoff pairings are directly related to each other. I'm suggesting that the northern/eastern bias that results in the unfair playoff pairings (even when travel is not a factor) is the same northern/eastern bias that led to them choosing a southern school like UMHB to make a draconian example of.

What is the reason for the bias, in your opinion? What motivation would the NCAA have for targeting a non northern/eastern institution?

It's not unusual that people have a bias, even if it's subconscious, for schools and sports teams located in the region where they live/work. I don't think that's a stretch at all. It's similar to how Northeast-oriented MLB decided to make an example out of the Astros by singling them out for punishment in the sign stealing scandal, while media darlings like the Yankees and Red Sox, who were known to be "cheating" too, were let off without so much as a reprimand.

is the NAIA or NCAA at the D2 level so geographicalist?  I know that I am sick of it at the D3 level.

Pat Coleman

D2 does all of its playoffs SOLELY by region, so every tournament is a battle to get out of your own region first before you get to the quarters/semis.

So thankful we don't have that.
