Seeing Augustana have three pitchers make the All Region team, with two of them being 1st Team selections, would sure make you think they were set up to do well at Regionals....  Instead, it was a 1-2 finish to the season.

Augie sure had the pitching to carry them further. They had one of the strongest bullpens in the CCIW.

D3Baseball announces its All-American selections.

CCIW honorees are:

First team: SP Harrison Boushele, Augustana
Second team: SP Josh Wintroub, Augustana
Fourth team: RP Nolan Shannon, North Central
Fifth team: OF Trey Romay, Elmhurst

Notable is the choice of Brett Sanchez of Belhaven as Pitcher of the Year, over Boushele and Gabe Van Emon of Endicott, both of whom had very comparable season stats.  Boushele's posted more wins (8-3 vs 6-2) and his ERA was lower (1.63 to Sanchez's 1.81), and Van Emon's numbers are even better: 10-1 and 1.51.  All three hurlers surpassed 100 K's on the season in roughly the same number of innings pitched (83-84).  It will be interesting to see how these selections line up with the ACBA choices.

Congratulations to Greg Sager on his induction into the North Park Viking Hall of Fame!  He is well deserving of this honor, given his dedication to and support of all Viking sports and his work as announcer in many of them (and at times, two different sports on the same day!).  The ceremony will take place on December 2nd.

2024 CCIW Baseball season has begun!

It's still early, but the conference is currently 21-26 as of this post. The biggest conference win so far is North Central over Stevens Point 4-3 on 3/2.

Pre-Season, 1st team All American, Harrison Boushele (Augustana) has yet to throw a pitch. Pre-Season, 3rd team All American, Nolan Shannon hasn't thrown one either. Alex Divito (North Park) had 39 hits last season. Through 7 games this season, he has 15 and is hitting .536 to start the year. IWU can hit and pitch this year, leading the CCIW in both Average and ERA early.

There are a lot of games to be played before the CCIW tournament in May. Good luck to all!

Alex Divito is still on a tear through 16 games for NP. 33-67 for a .493 average with 16 runs scored, 15 driven in, and 12 steals on 12 attempts. That's an amazing start to the season for him.  Not sure how he's only got 1 POTW to this point.

IWU is still leading the league in batting average and ERA. It's not close (at least when it comes to pitching).

The conference is now 63-58 overall.

Augie has a run of 6 in a row going.
Carthage is 8-1 in March.
North Park has put up 10 or more in 7 of their last 9.
North Central is 2-7 in their last 9.

Other updates: Harrison Boushele is no longer on the Augie roster. Nolan Shannon has faced one batter.

Wow....an entire season with zero posts. The mighty have fallen for sure.

North Park hosts CCIW tourney as co-champ with Millikin.

Game 1. IWU (3) v. Carthage (6)
Game 2. NCC (4) v. Augie (5)

Alex Divito's name is all over the leaderboard in OVERALL offensive statistics. #1 in BA, OPS+Slg, & Hits. Second in OB%, steals, and Runs scored. Sixth in RBI's and Slugg%. Conference-only stats point to Kyle Gibson of Millikin as your hitter of the year. That's my best guess anyway.

Bryce Shaum was second in the nation with 103 K's in 64.1 innings, but your CCIW Pitcher of the year will be Caleb Buehrle of Millikin.

Gregory Sager

I think that you're right on both award picks. I think that Buehrle edges out both Schaum and IWU's Shamhart (who was Pitcher of the Week three times this season) for Pitcher of the Year, and, because CCIW baseball goes with conference-only stats (some of the other CCIW sports use overall stats as their awards metric instead, or at least have done so in the past), I agree that Gibson will probably take Hitter of the Year.

Let Millikin have the awards, though. NPU gets to host the tourney, which in my opinion is a more useful accomplishment.

It has been a great year for both programs, though. This is North Park's first CCIW baseball title in a dozen years, and for Millikin you have to go back a whopping 49 years to 1975 to find the last time that the Decaturites took the CCIW crown in this sport. (Odd fact of the day: Millikin has won nine CCIW baseball titles under nine different head coaches. That's hard to do, especially since the vast majority of those titles came in the first 15 years or so that the CCIW has existed.)

I'm looking forward to calling those two knockout-round games on Wednesday!

The All-CCIW Teams have been announced. As predicted, Caleb Buehrle is the CCIW Pitcher of the Year, and the Student-Athlete of the Year is Bobby Bartlett, North Park's two-way player.  Newcomer of the Year is Jackson Bland of North Central.  Luke Johnson and Brandon Townsend share Coach of the Year honors.  Congratulations to all the honorees.

Maybe this is just an old White Sox fan talking, but it would be cool in some sense to say you got K'd by Buehrle.

Since February 26th, the CCIW has been handing out weekly awards to Student-Athletes in baseball. They have broken them down into hitters and pitchers. Now, for the award that encompasses the whole body of work, they give it to someone who appears in two offensive categories (9th in BA and 10th in SLG%), but who is also a pretty darn good pitcher?

CCIW only stats. Number of appearances in the Top 10 of a listed category.
Gibson, MU - 12
DiVito, NPU - 10
Roach, NCC - 9
Wu, Wheaton - 7
Bland, NCC - 7
Oberli, NCC - 6
Fujii, NCC - 5
Numerous others - 3-5
Bartlett, NPU - 2

I don't get the thought process here at all from the CCIW.

This post is not meant to be a dig at Mr. Bartlett. Obviously, he had a good season for NPU. I'm questioning the award, not the awardee.

So am I assuming correctly that the CIW Student Athlete of the Year is similar to other conference's Offensive Player of the Year?  Or are they not even remotely close?

Also, anyone seen/head from Big Poppa recently?  Miss his contributions to the baseball board....
