WOnder if the athletic department got told they need to start bringing in more people to help with enrollment?

What thoughts do people have about the new 40 team DIII football playoff format?

Thats what BSC also did the last 2 years of existence.  I think it's a, "Do anything to get enrollment up" move.  It's for sure a sign of trouble.

H-SC has nearly $500 million in assets and under $100 million in liabilities (year ending June 2023).  For the last five years they have net income over $116 million (against annual expenses around $85M) so they aren't going anywhere.

It's not. Lots of schools over recruit as a matter of enrollment policy. Freshman are the most valuable students. They live on campus, buy the food package, and require the least expensive professors as they are mainly in intro classes, which are also usually the largest classes per professor.

How does it work? Can't find anything that explains it. Seems like you have to get from 40 teams to 32 teams, which would mean 24 teams would get first round "byes" and there would be eight first round games involving the other 16 teams, the eight winners making up the final 32. So six teams in each quadrant don't play the first week and two winners from the first round moving on in each quadrant. Or is there another way to do it?

Here's an example from a story we did earlier in the offseason:

^^^ Thanks, Pat. I got to wondering why 40 vs 36. Then realized that if they're going to add another week they might as well give as many teams as possible a shot.

R-MC Guy

If the NCAA was focused on giving as many teams as possible a chance to play in 6 playoff weekends, they would have gone to 64 teams. I suspect that they wanted to give the "clearly deserving" at large teams a chance to play while not driving costs up too high.

Not it has to do with the access ratio being 6:1. There are roughly 240 teams, so 40x6 is the access ratio followed by D3 sports. Football had been short for a few years, this was a nice catch up that most of us never thought would happen due to the increase in cost.

Ralph Turner

I believe that the access ratio for D-3 is 1:6.5
