Quote from: Ron Boerger on July 16, 2024, 10:56:19 AMMitton stepped away from football altogether according to TrueToTheCru.com.  How many of the others actually are playing elsewhere?  Could not find anything on Patteson, Deal, Tandoh, Cormier; Mullins and Adams went D1 (SFA); Terry went D1 (North Dakota); Makins is the only one I can find still playing at the D3 level.  Hard to blame anyone taking their talents to D1 if they have the opportunity.

The NIL era and open transferability have changed the landscape so dramatically.  But for every successful transfer you see more enter the portal, never to emerge again.

Cormier announced he was going to East Central (D2) with KJ Peoples from HSU, but has since deleted his Twitter.

By the end of 2022 Mullins was basically TE2 behind Sophomore Will McClintock and Bill Bleil was coaching at SFA.

As to the others, as Ron mentioned, they basically stepped away from football.  We've gotten enough transfers from ETBU after poaching their DC at this point :D

Quote from: BSCpanthers on July 16, 2024, 10:12:21 AMHave to wonder how much of that has to do with the conference situation.  Guys don't want to go to college to play prep teams and 4 schools twice.  The ASC 4 really need to figure out their football schedule for the '25 season now so they aren't stuck with the same terrible schedule.

Considering only one of them who continued playing transferred in division (instead of transferring up) and they still ended up at a team playing Westgate, it probably had almost no impact.

Where was Mankins from?----might have been a reason for him transferring if it was closer to home.  Patteson was a beast in his one yr playing.  Hate to see guys that have established themselves as a force leave for any reason other than graduation.  If being part of a program that consistently won conference Championships and was considered a contender for the National title year in/year out isn't enough, then why even play?  It seems it's all about Jerry Maguire now----"Show me the money"

We've ALWAYS had players capable of transferring to D1 and playing. In fact pick any UMHB team in the last decade and we've had more "D1 caliber" players on our roster than we did in 2023.

Look at 2016-2017. The entire DLine was FBS starting caliber. Many in the secondary too. None of those guys left or even entertained it.

Anyone with insight on to what the cru might look like this year?  Defense? Offense?

Here is the spreadsheet I was working on with offers/commitments and transfers.  Looks like we got a few players transfer down, a few from ETBU when we hired their DC, and a few juco transfers.

I've been wondering the same thing. They needed to significantly overhaul the roster with an influx of talent in the offseason, and also replace some good ones lost to the portal. Hopefully they managed to do that, but I have no idea what to expect from this year's team. I could see anywhere from 1-3 losses, and I have no idea which scenario is most likely.

We added more D1 (former) / Juco guys than ever before. We'll see how that goes. Like 10-15 of them last I checked. Obviously some great athletes in that bunch.

Typically need to have a very strong leadership group in place to be able to adequately handle that many D1/JUCO guys coming in. Not sure we do, especially after breaking our team record for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in a season a year ago (by a wide margin).

More negative news on the current roster front: Our RB1 Ozias Wright seems to either be retiring or out of eligibility and has updated his twitter bio to "former" UMHB RB and current WR graduate assistant, big loss as he was probably our best offensive player.

Lot's of uncertainty but bow am I excited for football season, good or bad it's almost here!

Ozias "should" be out of eligibility.  He posted earlier about getting a waiver possibly but I don't see how he would've.  He played for Sul Ross for 4 years playing 10, 5, 6, and 9 games.  Then for UMHB playing 9 games.

I think Kenneth Miller Jr might have another year of eligibility, but can't seem to find much of his history prior to coming to UMHB as a graduate student.

That's great. I'm excited to see how they all pan out. Though I am disappointed that it doesn't appear they did much to upgrade the OL, which might have been the biggest liability on the 2023 team. Maybe they brought in some guys under the radar.

QuoteUMHB secures a commitment from defensive lineman Ron Tatum. Tatum began his career at the University of Oklahoma and was a US Army All-American coming out of high school. He also previously played at Northeast Oklahoma A&M.
