That is a TOUGH box score. Tommies had 172 yds (~70 came on their last drive of game) of total offense and QB's went a combined 14-35 😳

Quote from: SagatagSam on August 29, 2024, 12:22:16 PMHigh school football gets going in South Dakota this weekend for all classes. It's going to be good to get back on the field and officiate games.

I have a connection to the NAIA and Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) that may be able to get me substituting on a college crew next year.

Fear not, non-Johnnie MIAC fans, I will not be on a MIAC crew anytime soon (or ever), so I won't have to ever defend why I would have thrown a disproportionate number of flags on Bethel.

Did you do football last year as well?  I got into HS reffing last year, partially on your positive vote, along with that of a dad on my daughter's soccer team who has been doing it a long time.  It's fun.  More challenging than I anticipated when all of the action is right in your face, and even once you make a call - it's not just the simple men's league officiating - but all the mechanics of reporting calls, switching, etc.  I did about 20 games last year - mostly 9th and 10th, and a couple of JV.  No interest at the moment of doing varsity - 3 person crew and shot clock would overwhelm me at this point - in addition to everything happening faster with older groups.

A lifetime ago (about 30 years ago) I reffed basketball. Did everything from 5th grade up to some varsity. Once had a partner at a youth tournament that never crossed half court and literally didn't blow the whistle unless it the ball went out of bounds or it was an obvious violation...he didn't call any fouls. He told me he had "reffed" three or four games on Friday, was doing six on Saturday and another five or six on Sunday. At halftime of one of the games a Wayzata coach lit him up...asked him for his state officials ID which he had memorized. At that moment I told myself I would never call more a few games in a day.
Fast forward to this summer when I started umpiring softball. I'm meeting guys (and some gals) that are working six or seven games a day...in the heat. Maybe you can make $650-700 in a weekend but then you spend three days recovering from it.
I won't do basketball again...don't want to push the partial knee replacement...also in those youth tournaments you don't always know who your partner is going to be. Sometimes you luck out and get someone that actually is interested in calling the game correctly. In softball I've worked some two umpire games which is much different than reffing basketball with a partner.

Yesterday I did the chain crew for a local high school game. The officials were wearing microphones and earpieces and had a trainee on the sideline that was also plugged in. The average person that watches a game has no idea the amount of communication and teamwork that is involved in reffing football. Again...I doubt I would ref football at this point in my life...don't need some kid crashing into me and damaging what an amazing orthopedic surgeon repaired.

UST took it on the chin from a D2 team that was 3-8 last year IIRC. That's ... not a good look. Maybe USF is a lot better this year, but for a program with aspirations of being a Top 25 FCS team and getting into the Valley ...  :o

I think Caruso has had some coordinator turnover the last few years. Wonder if the shine is coming off a bit. Time will tell.

Has anyone figured out how to buy a pass for the online games yet?  I would like to avoid trying to get it organised at 3:30am next Sunday, so any help is appreciated.

I posted this a couple weeks ago;

If you're wondering how to purchase SJU video stream...I logged into Hudl and clicked on the SJU / Carthage game link. It brings up a link for "Purchase Options." Clicking on that link opens up the option to pay per game or an "Access Pass" for the season. The access pass averages out to $12.88 per game ($75 + $2.55 processing fee).
The access pass claims to allow "Watch on Demand." I'm wondering if this actually will allow one to watch on demand...for some reason I don't believe that option has worked in the past. I've got a wedding to attend on October 5th at 2pm and the social hour doesn't begin until 5pm. I'd like to be able to watch the game after the service.

The O2O (Official to Official) radios are awesome. That way the Back Judge can communicate directly with the entire crew on a call/no-call on a long pass play. In the ol' days, they would have to relay that to the referee. O2O really speeds up the game. And, you may have a coach going ballistic about the play to a wing official 50+ yards away from the play and all that wing official can do is tap dance to cool that head coach down.

Best practice for a five-man crew is to have six radios and give one to the clock operator. That way if you have to reset the game/play clock you can do it over the radio instead of having to announce it over the public address field mic.

It's gonna be a busy fall for me this year, so not sure I'll be posting prognostications before the weekly games every week. We'll see how it goes.

This first week of MIAC FB has two teams with byes - St. Scholastica and Bethel.

Augsburg starts off the season on Friday night hosting NAIA Valley City State. If you have the evening free, it gives folks in the twin city area a chance to see a Friday night inter-league game. Often VCS plays Concordia so this is a nice change of pace. I could see the Auggies pulling this off, and I hope they do.

Carleton travels to California to take on the SCIAC team Pomona-Pitzer. Carleton seems to be actively challenging themselves to get better to get into the top tier of the MIAC. Last year the Sagehens went 6-4, so I suspect the Knights will prevail on the road this week.

In like manner, Gustavus hosts a West-coast team having Whitworth in town this week. If you recall, the Pirates won the Northwest conference last year so the Gusties have their work cut out for them. I'm leaning to the left(coast) on this game, but the Gusties should give them a run for their money.

St. John's hosts Carthage from the CCIW Conference to open their season. The Johnnies will scrub the Firebirds' flame right off the hoods of their wide-track cars.

Concordia hosts the WIAC team UW Eau Claire that comes into the game off a 2-8 season. The Cobbers played .500 ball last year. On paper, the Cobbers should win this one at home, but the WIAC is the best conference in D3 and the Blugolds would love to start their season off with a win. This might be the game of the week in the "closeness" factor.

Hamline heads to the West side of the cities to take on UMAC's Crown College. The Pipers better win this game against the Polars by at least a monkey stomp, or they will have a long, long row to hoe in the MIAC for the remainder of the year.

Macalester also travels to a UMAC venue, that of Minnesota Morris for a Saturday night game. The Cougars posted a 7-4 record last year, so the Scots will have to be hitting on all cylinders to pull out a road win at the beginning of the season. I noted this earlier this year, but this is the first of three games that the Cougars play three MIAC teams this year. It'll be interesting to see what their record in the MIAC is after these first games of the season.

The final game of the week has St. Olaf coming up into town to take on the UMAC team of Northwestern. Last year's Eagles posted a record of 6-4, while the Oles record was 4-6. As I look over this week's games, this could be the second closest game - kind of a toss up with the Auggies game that happens on Friday night.

My prediction for the MIAC is 3 wins, 4 toss-ups, and the Gusties losing. First week games are usually wide-open because of large personnel changes from year to year. Looking forward to a great year in the MIAC - but can't wait for the silly play-off games at the end of the season to be done. (Even though BU has benefited by them so far.)

They're still a non-scholarship team going up against a scholarship team. This is just more evidence that they should have kept playing Johnnie/Tommie.

I hate to do this, but I agree with the Tommies that it is more sensible they don't play SJU.  Getting pantsed by a scholarship program is defendable to recruits.  Getting pantsed by a D3 program isn't.  Likewise, beating a scholarship program is a great selling point.  Beating a traditional D3 rival by anything less than a double monkeystomp isn't.

(FYI, I don't think "getting pantsed" is in the American slang lexicon.  It's like an ankle-breaker in the Aussie lexicon.  You get beat so badly that your pants fall down.)

(And thanks, faunch.  I'm all set for Sunday morning.)
