Gilmer seems fine, he was playing at the end.  Subbed out with 5 minutes left but he didn't look injured.  If he was it was just a knock.

Props to Vassar for gutting out a win against a good Union side without Tobolski, the league's leading scorer, and Keker, who has been absent since early the second game after picking up 5 points in the first.  Hopefully they will get one or both back by playoff time.  Also, major academic props for obtaining a ranking by US News in the top dozen liberal arts colleges.  Nice.

The turf at RPI helped turn this into a faster game than normal for SLU.  They are moving the ball around well and playing with purpose. They just can't seem to score the last two games (two PKs). And one was taken away from Brown on a ridiculous call as the ball was in the goal (and there was no foul).
Kevdog, I think you meant Mogul with the injury. He went down hard in the first half and was subbed out but returned to play the second half. He once again, has been dominating on the wing and has been responsible for most of the scoring chances the last few games. He had a screamer off the crossbar in the first half and has been the most dynamic player on the field. Hopefully the goals and assists will come.
I agree with you re Jeremy. He is missed. As is Marco Wong who is apparently back at school but lost his elegibility because he played a few pro games back in Hong Kong last year. Coach is still looking for a combination of players in the middle, moving Petrone back and forth from holding to attacking mid. The winger Ryan Campbell has been terrific off the bench. Could he play the 10? Could he get a short spell at striker and either give Brown a rest or move him to winger for 5-10 minute run?
Can't say enough about the defense. Baker, Diaz, Lillis, Gustav, and the keeper George, have all combined to shut down their opponents. We are getting used to clean sheets.
And yes STLAWUS, the terrible non conference away schedule (because of Oneonta weekend) is over and the home cooking begins. 5 home games and 3 away left in conference. Vassar and Hobart at home. A favorable schedule for sure. If they remain healthy (and away from too many yellow cards), I have high hopes for this team.

I noticed Clinton giving Mogul some pretty complimentary words in the post game handshake line, at least that's what it looked like.  He did have a great game despite it not showing up in the stat sheet, no one could stop him.  As for SLU's midfield, I continue to be impressed by first year Kyle Reddish in the DM role.  Very composed on the ball, smooth passer and physically imposing.  I do wonder what Ogango's injury is.  I've seen him helping out in pregame warmups and he doesn't seem to have any obvious injury.  Concussion maybe?  Don't want to speculate too much though.

Early observations around the league so far to me seems that whoever can steal the most points on the road should be sitting well for a playoff position.  Extremely obvious of course but nothing too out of the ordinary so far, aside from maybe Hobart's start.  For some reason they've already played 3 league games compared to 1 for most.  But as I've said countless times, playing with the target on your back as defending champs can weigh pretty heavily, and that's before you even start counting the 5th years they lost to graduation last season.  Still plenty of time for them to string wins.

I noticed Clinton talking to Mogul too after the game. Finding a position for him where he can be most effective is key for Tosh but a good problem to have. He looks great on the wing, takes defenders 1 on 1 and usually beats them. He has also looked good in the middle. I too have noticed Jeremy walking around before games and on the side lines. It doesn't seem like he is hurt too bad but it it is a concussion I rather him be safe and as SLU should. I just miss him out there. Reddish does look compose on the ball and is steady. The one thing that I have notice is that it looks like he is lumbering when he runs and I thought he was maybe banged up but I think that how he just runs. The other guy who has been impressed with is Gustav. He is just solid and composed. I also love bringing him up for set pieces. He is trouble for opponents because he seems determine to attack the ball and hopefully the goals will come.

Re Jeremy, I think he is red-shirted this year. I heard that he had a hip operation a few months ago and he is not ready to return to competition. A huge loss for a team that can go far this year.

stlawus

Unfortunate for him, hope he recovers in full.  Interesting he took a medical redshirt, not really common at the division 3 level but good news for him to retain a final 2 years of playing eligibility.

Quote from: deutschfan on September 23, 2024, 06:02:09 PMI am not annoyed by SLU fervor or posting by the SLU faithful, including two of my all time faves Saint of Old and St. Lawus.   What does annoy me is the blatant favoritism to SLU shown by the league in weekly and yearly awards to SLU players.  This week is prototypical.  Award is given to SLU forward for scoring a penalty kick in a 1-0 win over the Massey rated 277th strongest team in the country.  There were many other players who scored goals this week against much better teams including a killer volley by a Clarkson forward to tie the 21st ranked team in the country.  Given that the SLU player had won the award a couple of weeks previous should have been incentive to spread the wealth around.  But that assumes that the league wants to spread the wealth around which history suggests is not the case.
He got the award again for a penalty kick.  Although he did deserve a second goal that was taken away.

Vassar clocking in at #20 on the USC rankings. Well deserved and great to see a team from the LL in the national rankings.

Pretty boring slate of games. Three 0-0 draws and two 1-0 results that put Vassar in first for the time being.

SLU was rather poor today. Should have buried two chances in the first half, other than that repeatedly boxed themselves in on the sidelines and kept giving Ithaca what were essentially corner kicks with their flip throwing right back.  5 straight shutouts but the team went back to their ways of trying to do too much without any sense of urgency.  Big one on Wednesday.

deutschfan

Am looking for Brown to threepeat.  He won offensive player last week with a single penalty kick while Quinn Phillips of Hobart had a 5 point game against Ithaca, the same Ithaca team that had twice as many shots against SLU in their nil-nil draw.  But Brown did have a shot today against Ithaca which is why I am looking for a threepeat because even though it wasn't on goal I am certain it was one of the greatest shots of all time.  As to Vassar for now--who is going to catch them?  They are doing something (necessity is the mother of invention) that they didn't do at the beginning of the year--play strong defense.  Their young players are stepping up and will just get better as the season goes on.

stlawus

I'll crown Vassar when they've played a few more teams that weren't at the bottom of the standings last year.

deutschfan

They happened to beat Oneonta, a team that SLU was a minute away from losing to until bailed out with a penalty.  And perhaps I have my history wrong but didn't Union finish ahead of SLU last year?

A non league game now has bearing on the final standings?  They've won the games they're supposed to so far and have looked good doing it.  What does SLU's finish last year have to do with anything as well?  We're not talking about SLU.   Union finished high but also lost their best player and coach.

If you want to crown Vassar by all means do so, they are the best team right now. I will not, however, do so 3 games into the season.  They were crowned last year as well so forgive me until I see a little more until I'm fully convinced.

Flukey goalkeeper error and another game of SLU not burying chances results in another draw. They were all over Clarkson in the first half but one bad moment costs them. Same issue as the Ithaca game where in the last 20 minutes they repeatedly kept boxing themselves in on the sidelines in the final third. Clarkson never really threatened besides maybe one chance in the 2nd half.   SLU used their speed in the first half as Clarkson could not keep up but then for some reason decided to go away from the flanks in the 2nd half until it was too late.

Clarkson is well organized and doesn't make many mistakes.  Speed is something I noticed early in the season as a weakness which still remains the case, but they otherwise get good goalkeeping and solid defense.

This no overtime is killing me.  Gotta get this rule reversed.  This is college soccer, not the premier league.  Too few games to not have overtime.
