Give me the mules over the cards this weekend. Colby has kept it close with everyone all season, and this is the game they get over the hump.

Charlie

One thing I will say about Colby the last three years is that the team plays hard. I know their efforts are not reflective in their record. But they play hard each and every game. I truly believe they are one or two skilled players away from entering the middle of the pack in the NESCAC. I also think that Cosgrove has to be considering moving on or the school is considering a change. Unfortunate at the Coaching carousel at that school. The players deserve stability. This program as I said with a few skilled players added and good coaching could make that jump to the middle pack of NESCAC.

1,500 posts in just over 11 years... not bad, Nescacman. I'm still shy of 1,000 dating back to the very beginning of this board in August of 2005. Hard to believe I've been arguing about NESCAC football here for almost 20 years!  :o

Prior to last season's OT loss in Waterville, Wes had won 12 straight over the Mules. In their last three games played in Middletown against Colby the Cards won by an average of almost 24 points per game. I'm not confident Wesleyan will cover the computer's implied three touchdown spread, but I do think they'll win and to improve to 4-1.

That result combined with a Williams win at Middlebury would leave the two CT schools at first and second atop the NESCAC standings.

As far as the NESCAC standings, aren't the Cards ahead of Middlebury as a result of the head-to-head win by Wes?!?  ;D

No, in that scenario Wes would be ahead of Middlebury based on record. Although I just realized a Williams win would put the Ephs and Cards in a two-way tie for 2nd place. I won't make it to Andrus on Saturday, but I trust you'll abide by the University's campus wide no smoking policy and refrain from indulging in any cigars while you enjoy the game. ;)

Sorry Hs9-o, we should have been clearer (or spoken slower) given your undergraduate studies. Our comment on Wes v. Middlebury was based on the current standings...Wes clearly wins the tie breaker over MID. ;D

Hs9-o...You'll be missed on Saturday. As we think you know, Wesleyan's archaic smoking regulations do not apply to our consortium as a result of us being grandfathered under prior rules. Montecristo anyone?!?

For obvious reasons related to last year's standings, us Middlebury fans agree that we are currently behind Wesleyan due to the head-to-head result  ;)

Congrats on 1,500, NM. I'm still aiming for a bump in status to second-stringer  ;D

2024 Week 5 NESCACMAN Picks

Welcome to Week 5 in the NESCAC "in the league where they pay to play". Another good week going 5-0 with our picks last week. We are off to our best start ever picking NESCAC winners.

Our Game of the Week features Middlebury hosting Williams in a NESCAC elimination game.

Colby College at Wesleyan University
Colby NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense: 5/Total Defense: 7
Wesleyan NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense: 4/Total Defense: 4
Wesleyan will try to win their 2nd game in a row as they face Colby on Andrus Field. Wesleyan has won 12 of the last 13 games against the Mules. The Mules are coming off their first win of the year as they beat UBates last week. Colby comes in 3rd in the NESCAC in rushing and will face the top-ranked Wesleyan run defense. Colby has given up the most rushing TDs in the NESCAC in 2024 (7) and is last at stopping their on 3rd downs. Wesleyan has given up the fewest (2) rushing TDs. Wesleyan is #1 in the NESCAC in points allowed and has only allowed 6 trips into the red zone resulting in 3 scores, only one of which has been for a TD. Colby QB Miles Drake is the reigning NESCAC OPOTW coming off a career day passing and running against UBates. RB Keon Smart is 2nd in the NESCAC in all-purpose yards. Wesleyan's Chase Wilson leads the NESCAC in receiving yards and in TD receptions averaging an eye-popping 26 YPC. He has 5 of Wesleyan's 11 offensive TDs. Colby shocked the Cards last year in Waterville so we're sure Wes has revenge on their mind. This game has extra meaning for Colby transfer DB Nick Danatio and former Colby Defensive Coordinator and current Wes Defensive Coordinator Adam Chicoine.
Why Wesleyan will win: Wesleyan doesn't turn the ball over much and Colby only has 1 INT through 4 games. Wesleyan's defense is one of the best in the NESCAC and Colby will find it challenging to score many points.
Why Colby will win: Wesleyan has been susceptible to the big play. They have a few skill players (Drake, Smart, Ferrara) that can produce big plays. Colby runs the ball well which produces long drives wearing down the Wes defense.
KTV for Wesleyan: Don't allow the big play. Avoid penalties. More consistency on offense. Be better in the red zone.
KTV for Colby: Will need to score against a stout Wes defense. Force turnovers (Colby only has 2 turnovers thus far in 2024).
Players to watch: QB Miles Drake (COL), WR Duke Ferrara (COL), RB Keon Smart (COL), LB Julian Young (COL), DE Jack Mullen (COL), QB Niko Candido (WES), WR Chase Wilson (WES), LB Ben Carbeau (WES), DB Dylan Connors (WES).
Game Summary: Wes cannot have a letdown at home like they did to Colby's C-B-B brethren, UBates. We think Wes will score either a special teams or a defensive TD in this one and their defense continues to fire on all cylinders. Points will be at a premium on Saturday.

Wesleyan 21 Colby 10
Point Spread: Wesleyan -10
Weather (courtesy of The Weather Channel): Sunny. High of 72.

Bowdoin College at Amherst College
Bowdoin NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense: 7/Total Defense: 10
Amherst NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense: 10/Total Defense: 3
The Lord Mammoths face a challenge in the high-pressure Bowdoin defense. Although Bowdoin is last in the NESCAC in total defense (despite having faced 2 of the top 3 offenses in the NESCAC in their first 4 games), their risk/reward defense has them second in sacks (12) and forced fumbles (4). QB Robbie Long is 6th in the NESCAC in rushing. The Lord Mammoths continue to struggle on offense averaging only 47.5 yards per game on the ground (worst in the League), they are last in 3rd down conversions and have thrown the most interceptions (8) in the league.
Why Bowdoin will win: The high-pressure defense shuts down the Amherst offense and forces turnovers. LBs Dan Fiore and Koy Price lead the Polars defense. QB Robbie Long has a big day.
Why Amherst will win: They keep the game low scoring. Generate some offense and avoid interceptions.
KTV for Bowdoin: Run the ball well. Play a full 60 minutes.
KTV for Amherst: Defense needs to be strong. Score some points. Avoid turning the ball over.
Players to watch: LB Koy Price (BOW), QB Robbie Long (BOW), DL Dan Fiore (BOW), QB Mason Morrow (AMH), WR Owen Gaydos (AMH), LB Luke Harmon (AMH).
Game Summary: Both teams need to bounce back from last week's losses. We expect a relatively close, low-scoring game, with Bowdoin coming away with the mild upset on the road. If the Lord Mammoths can generate some offense they could come away with the win. Although Amherst is favored because they are at home, we have a feeling Bowdoin does just enough to come up with a win.

Bowdoin 17 Amherst 13
Point Spread: Amherst -4
Weather: Sunny. High of 68.

Hamilton College at Hartford State College
Hamilton NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense: 9/Total Defense: 9
Hartford State NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense: 1/Total Defense: 2
Hartford State seems to be getting stronger as the year goes by, which is not good news for Hamilton. The Bantams are yet to play a complete game in 2024. In fact, last Saturday, they trailed Tufts at the half. One of these weeks that are going to, and we have a feeling this week is the week. HS has converted on all their trips in the red zone this year (15) with 13 of them for TDs. Hamilton's star punter, Tighe Hoey, will get lots of work in this one. We think Bantam QB Zander Zebrowski, who has been stellar thus far in 2024, could be in for a big day against the porous Continental secondary (12 TDs allowed with only 1 INT). Hamilton must also stop turning the ball over.
Why Hamilton will win: We are having a tough time finding a scenario where Hamilton wins. Maybe Hartford State looks ahead to next week's big revenge game against Middlebury and totally takes their eye off the ball? Or the entire Hartford State team comes down with food poisoning? Or the Bantams go on strike for more NIL money? If Hamilton somehow does pull off a win, it would be the biggest upset in NESCAC history. We'll bet the house that won't happen.
Why Hartford State will win: They show up. Way too much talent to lose.
KTV for Hamilton: Play a perfect game. Force many HS turnovers.
KTV for Hartford State: Play Bantam football. It's that simple.
Players to watch: QB Luke Kurzum (HAM), WR Chester Boynton (HAM), DB Kyle Bratcher (HAM), QB Zander Zebrowski (HS), RB Tyler Dinapoli (HS), WR Sean Clapp (HS), WR Nolan O'Brien (HS).
Game Summary: Hartford State wins by a lot which sets up a big game in Vermont next week against Middlebury.

Hartford State 42 Hamilton 0
Point Spread: Hartford State -31
Weather: Sunny. High of 71.

Tufts University at University of Bates (Lewiston Campus)(6:00 PM kick)
Tufts NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense: 3/Total Defense: 1
UBates NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense: 8/Total Defense: 8
Should be a chilly night in Maine under the lights. Tufts has won 8 of the last 9 meetings between these two teams. UBates has played well the last two weeks beating Wesleyan and barely losing to rival Colby.  Meanwhile, Tufts will try to bounce back after a disappointing loss to Hartford State. The Kitties have run the ball well (2nd in the NESCAC) while the Jumbo's have been mediocre defending the run. We expect to see a lot of RB Ryan Linskey (NESCAC leading rusher) and WR/RB Sergio Beltran with the ball on Saturday night. UBates is 2nd in the NESCAC in 3rd down conversions. Tufts throws the ball well (2nd in the NESCAC) while UBates is 7th against the pass. QB Michael Berlutti is 2nd in the NESCAC in total offense. Scoring TDs in the red zone has been an issue for Tufts (5 of 15) but some of that is because they have the league's best kicker. Tufts needs a win to keep their slim hopes of their 1st NESCAC title alive.
Why Tufts will win: Tufts throws early and often to their two excellent receivers: Matt Rios and Cade Moore. The Jumbo's put 8 guys in the box to stop the Frisky Kitties Flex Option attack.
Why UBates will win: Use the same formula that they used to beat Wesleyan. Run the ball, force turnovers, and control the clock.
KTV for Tufts: Stop the Frisky Kitties running game and force them to throw. Avoid turnovers. Show some semblance of a running game.
KTV for UBates: Run the ball effectively. Avoid 3rd and long. Be patient.
Players to watch: WR QB Michael Berlutti (TUF), WR Cade Moore (TUF), WR Matt Rios (TUF), QB Colton Bosselait (UB), QB Seneca Moore (UB), RB Ryan Lynskey (UB), LB Ryan Rozich (UB).
Game Summary: We think UBates give the Jumbo's all they can handle for a while, but Tufts pulls away in the second half.

Tufts 28 UBates 14
Point Spread: Tufts -14
Weather: Partly cloudy. Low of 37.

NESCAC Game of the Week

Williams College at Middlebury College
Williams NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense: 2/Total Defense: 4
Middlebury NESCAC Ranks: Total Offense: 6/Total Defense: 6
Elimination game in the NESCAC. Winner is still in the hunt for the NESCAC title, and the loser will be looking towards 2025. The Middlebury defense has played well the past 2 weeks and leads the NESCAC in sacks and interceptions. Williams has run the ball well leading the NESCAC in rushing led by Senior RB Mario Fischetti. Middlebury rushes the QB well (leads the NESCAC with 14) and Williams is second to last in sacks allowed. Williams has been very good in the red zone going 10 for 10.
Why Williams will win: QB Owen McHugh continues his maturation. Williams running game takes the game over.
Why Middlebury will win: The Middlebury defense completely shuts down McHugh. The Middlebury offensive line plays better as they have allowed the second most sacks in the NESCAC. Middlebury defensive line dominates creating havoc for the Williams running and passing game.

KTV for Williams: Get the running game going to set up the pass. Protect the QB.
KTV for Middlebury: Stop the Williams running game. Avoid turnovers.
Players to watch: QB Owen McHugh (WIL), LB Luke Mangini (WIL), RB Mario Fischetti (WIL), RB Jon Oris (WIL), QB Brian Moran (MID), WR Patrick Jamin (MID), DL Tomas Kenary (MID), DT Dave Filias (MID), DB Rocco Stolla (MID).
Game Summary: Should be a nail biter. Both teams are well-coached and evenly matched. We give the slight advantage to the home team.

Middlebury 24 Williams 21
Point Spread: Middlebury -3
Weather: Partly cloudy. High of 57.

Good luck to all the student-athletes and coaches this Saturday!

Horrible slate of games this week besides the Pants and Purple Mooers.
