And in the nightcap, NCC blanks NPU 69-0.

The Vikings were held to just 84 yards of total offense and did not get past midfield the entire game.

Luke Lehnen threw for 182 yards and three scores, becoming the first player in NCAA history to throw a touchdown pass in 50 straight games.

Don't care. As I said earlier this week, the important thing about today was that the Vikings got back on the bus to leave Naperville as healthy as they were when they pulled into town. The next two games are the ones that matter for NPU.

For all I care, the Vikings could lose four 69-0 games ... as long as they win the other six. I want The Streak to end. Period.

Now I understand why I hear some people saying, "you have to make Luke throw." ;D

Something happened in the Wheaton/Carthage game that hasn't happened for Wheaton since 1918, which is longer than either Sager or I have been around!

Wheaton played an entire game with zero penalties called. Zero. I have never seen that in any football game (saw it once in basketball). Crazy.

I think Wheaton will be a slight dog to WashU in St Louis this weekend.

I'll have to do a little more reading up on NPI, but I should hope that Oshkosh's success has helped Wheaton.  Probably doesn't mean anything if they can't get out of St. Louis with a win though.  The Bears are looking like a tough challenge.  Is it just me, or are the pollsters kind of sleeping on WashU a little bit?

I had this exact thought when I was looking over the poll last evening.  Only 6 points is wild.  Heck, Wheaton at 25 is wild considering at this point it looks like they could hang with any of the UW's.

The new NPI calculations are going to take some adjusting. I knew the old system for regional rankings and SOS,etc and this one is much different. No subjectivity to the selections. It's all NPI. I watched the @D3datacast guys youtube video on NPI and it's very informative. Here is the link to their NPI calcs (thanks to Pat who also links it on the front page of D3Football.com...under "News" and "NPI"). https://d3datacast.com/npi/football/

The caluclation for NPI are taken from these: Win%/SOS--which is one number;  Home/Away Win/Loss, Quality win bonus (QWB) and 5 minimum wins (i.e. your 5 best wins are used to calculate the NPI). Each of these has a weighting and a multiplier. The weightings are the "dials" the natiional committee uses before each season to determine NPI. These can be adjusted but only during the offseason. Once they are set, thats it. So the weighting for this year for Win%/SOS is 40% Win% and 60% SOS. In basketball its 25/75.

My gut instinct is that Wheaton has little chance to make the field as the new calculations really focus on win% so any 1 loss team is likely ranked ahead of almost all 2 loss teams. The other thing to note is that the "minimum wins" part of the calculation is not a minimum win criteria for entry, its a minimum win that goes into your NPI calculation. So as the season wears on, your NPI will change based on who you play.

For example, the baseline NPI for football is 54. If you play beat a team with a 54 or better NPI your NPI goes up and you get a "quality win bonus" (QWB). If you beat a team with a lower than 54 NPI your NPI goes down. upon getting to 6 wins, your "worst win" drops out of the calculation. Wheaton's NPI is negatively affected by Carthage and will improve a lot if they beat WashU. But Wheaton will then see a drop in NPI if/when they beat Elmhurst and Millikin. North Park is currently at 55 for NPI so a win there is a slight bump. But all of these teams NPI's will change every week.

As far as playing Oshkosh, there isn't a win for Wheaton so they take a hit in the biggest criteria, win percentage, and dont get a QWB. That game literally will keep them from playoffs, most likely. Regardless, the way we all thought about playoff selections is changing pretty dramatically.

HansenRatings.com is all over this as well and he has looked at this a lot more closely than I have. He actually gives Wheaton a 50% chance at Pool C, based on his end of season simulations for NPI. The D3Datacast guys have Wheaton ranked (via current NPI) as #30 in Pool C (12 teams taken) including 4 other 2 loss teams ahead of them on NPI.

If your team doesn't get selected this year, you can only complain to the computer....there is not human interaction for selection into the field.

They made it to the promised land! Just a few weeks ago a clip went viral of a pbp man alluding to the fact the game had no penalties to that point (it was in the 3rd quarter of some random D1 game, I believe), and the color man basically said "don't you dare say it"....and on the ensuing play there was a penalty. Good stuff.
You win! You always do!
