Hopkins Walk-On

Final Score - Dickinson 6, Washington College 1

Dickinson's first three goals were very nice.

First one (@ 34:42 remaining) was a blast from 30 yds or so into the upper right corner by freshman Westin Fryberger after a bad give-away by Washington College.

Second one (@ 34:10 remaining) was a decent shot from Ethan Jarden.

Third one (@ 33:53 remaining) was another from Jarden.

Saul Iwowo then notched a hat trick off of two goalie misplays and a scrum in front of the net after a long throw.

Pretty dramatic turnaround after a 0-0 halftime score.

Make that games. The Dickinson women face off against the Hopkins women at 4 followed by the men's game at 7.

F&M women travel to McDaniel with its OT win against the Fords. Still a lot of great soccer for some.

Messiah has now outscored its opponents 32-4 over the last 10 games. They are 9-0-1 during this stretch, with the tie coming against Lycoming at the very beginning of October.

Valid but of those last 10 only York has won more than 1/2 their games.

Yeah, and kind of to your point, I have a very loose theory that Messiah's relatively weak conference does them no favors when it comes to the NCAAs.

But given how they started, the last 10 games should remind upcoming opponents not to take them lightly.

I watched a few on their games early in the season with a couple of good wins and then some during the rough stretch.  Frankly I was surprised watching their loss at Rowan--was expecting a much tougher match despite the close result.  It seemed something had changed dramatically, and I read on these boards about backline injuries.  In any event I also noticed their more recent success but only by looking at the W/L record and not watching the games.  Maybe their conference strength has something to do with it, but I can't help but wonder if they made any adjustments?  Or if some players returned as fit?

Probably a younger group than years past--more freshmen players added into the starting mix following the graduation of a big and highly talented class last year.

Moved 5th year--Jarec Morlote to CB recently which seems to have greatly helped with possession and keeping the ball in the opponents half

Massey has messiah in top 25 which is about right. They are playing higher than that at this point in the season. If they hold firm vs York this weekend, then any team looking forward to drawing them in the tournament is in for a most unpleasant surprise.

Based on nothing from 2024

While I get that Messiah is probably getting their legs underneath them after a rocky start, they haven't really had a chance to play anyone with quality

I don't disagree, but I don't want to draw them in the first round of the NCAAs either the way they've been playing. If you think they are not in the top 25, then they are likely in the bottom half of the bracket somewhere. Is this really the team you want across from you in that first round?

Teams around Messiah in NPI:

Oglethorpe
Vassar
Redlands
Messiah
Plattsburgh
Va Wes
Stephens

Of that list, I think Messiah is topping the teams I don't want to see in round 1. You'd probably have to go as high as Muhlenberg or Covenant, about 10 spots above Messiah, before you'd find a team I'd want to see less. And then you'd find a bunch more even higher than that I'd rather see than Messiah.

There are things NPI doesn't account for, in this case team growth, and I think Messiah is much more dangerous now than they were at the mid-season swoon. But they get York in the conference finals, 13 spots above them this morning in NPI, and I have a feeling Messiah will be just fine earning an AQ the way they are playing. I just don't see York getting revenge on the 4-0 loss earlier this year, despite this game being at home.

eaglesoccerdad

I agree that they will be a tough team to face.
Also think the York NPI ranking is a case study - play a weak schedule, win most of the games and will probably only lose 2 games. Best results are ties to Wash College and Carnegie Mellon. With that resume it looks like they will be in line to get an at large bid.

Agreed. Nothing perfect. May be crazy, but maybe the NPI could consider goal differential at some point? Could be too complicated. Maybe limit to 4 goal or 3 goal differential especially when teams blow out bad teams.

Yes, rough start by Messiah, but lights out the rest of season. They can only play who they play. Would not want to meet a team crushing it like Messiah.
