Quote from: HSUCowboy2015 on November 17, 2024, 05:22:17 PMNew system, same bull**** playoff pairings. I know, I know, geography.

Pretty sure I know what you are feeling but in defense of the bracket, with HSU being the #2 overall seed, playing UMHB or Trinity who are one of the lowest seeds fits.

I know, but giving TLU a first round bye is surprising. I personally would have sent UMHB to Oregon to play Linfield. Have TLU and Trinity have a first round rematch instead of a potential 3rd game in round two, and then a potential third game in the third round. But Hey, if you're going to make a run at a championship you have to win, bottom line. Let's see how it plays out.

I think two things are in play here.  First, you can either guarantee a regular season rematch between TLU and Trinity (which isn't against bracketing principles, but not preferred) or you move UMHB out and avoid a potential rematch of ASC teams in the second round.  There is not a guarantee that HSU-UMHB happens at all.

Also, TLU was ranked higher than either Trinity or UMHB, so if somebody had to move and moving somebody was going to put them in a second round game, TLU is the team that earned that bit of grace according to NPI.

We did talk about this on the pod.  We don't love it, but there's not a lot of options to do this another way without chartering more flights.

I wonder if NIL in the Gulf South was not worth the "money".

Interesting. My brother lives in Clinton and his daughter works at the school. I'd like to get his take on this news.
Not really a bad dog. Just misunderstood!

I did read a comment about NIL.
My greatest wish is that D-3 will prohibit NIL. I would rather give money to the Science Department or to some of the scholarships that my family has created over the last 40 years. I don't want to be playing against a school who is beating me with NIL recruits.

Interesting, with MC not playing football the Gulf South Conference will only have 4 football playing members next year.Doesn't look like a good solution for the ASC members as they are solid in everything else but I would assume that conference may have to do what the SCAC did a while back and have their football playing members join other conferences for football.

The C2C tweeted that a "big announcement" is coming Tuesday morning at 11AM ET.  Pat (I assume) responded that they were told last week that any C2C-ASC venture was dead, but couldn't confirm (and still can't) so did not report on the information.

Ron Boerger

And Pat was right.  The big announcement was Regent University, an NCCAA school transitioning to D3, joining the C2C.

A bit off topic, but I've wondered why a school like Christopher Newport can't find a more stable and attractive conference than the C2C. 4,000+ undergrads. Competitive nationally in multiple sports. A region with a lot of other D3 schools. Granted, I know almost nothing about schools in the Virginia area.

There aren't a ton of D-III state schools in the area. The C2C/former CAC was formed as a marriage of convenience between a handful of private schools near D.C. and a couple of state schools (Mary Washington, St. Mary's MD) and added Salisbury early on, but it was always tense between the state schools and the privates, since the state schools, Mary Wash and Salisbury particularly, won a lot of titles. Adding CNU added to that.

CNU is too far from the NJAC for it to make sense from an all-sports perspective.

Aah, so it's the state school vs private school issue. Thanks!

Yes. For example the ODAC charter specifically prohibits state schools. The ODAC would be the most geographically reasonable conference, but is simply not a possibility. CNU was in the USASAC for a while, but they were a huge geographical outlier. Many of the Pennsylvania state schools are not D3. PSAC is a D2 conference. Frostberg State going D2 hurt the Maryland area public schools. I don't know about the Centennial or Landmark's charters, but they are private schools. There just isn't a good alternative.

Ron Boerger

CNU has won three nattys since joining the C2C (women's soccer, softball, men's basketball) so they are probably pretty happy the way things are going.
