Quote from: Gregory Sager on November 23, 2024, 08:42:01 PMThe CCIW's secret is out. After the postgame show was a wrap and I had packed up my laptop and put on my coat I walked out the door to cross Kedzie Avenue and eat my usual postgame meal at Charcoal Delights. Lo and behold, the entire restaurant was packed out by UW-Oshkosh players, coaches, and parents. Not a seat to be found anywhere; just a sea of black and gold. For all of the visiting teams that I've seen eat their postgame dinner in that place over the decades, I've never seen anything like that happen before. So I just chuckled and walked away. To the victor go the spoils, I guess.

Maybe you should have joined them.....Coach Lewis is a class guy.

What, and sit on his lap? As I said, there were no seats left.

It's OK, though. More business for my peeps at CD.

Thanks! Much appreciated.

As much as I hate to say this...I'm going to predict that this is the year that someone runs the CCIW gauntlet unscathed.

IWU runs the CCIW table this season.  Book it.

It hasn't happened in the previous 51 seasons, so yes, I am sure this is the year.

Sweet fancy Moses, do you really want to feed the self-regard of the Green People like that?

It's one thing to think it. It's another thing altogether to post it where everybody can see it. ;)

This. Thank you for that signpost to sanity, GU1999.

It's a win / win for me.  If it happens to happen, I'm a legend.  If I'm wrong, IWU loses...I win.

That's diabolical thinking right there. That's all I have to say about that. :D

Meanwhile, I'm left with nightmares of green-clad octogenarians sitting just to the right of my crackerbox broadcasting perch who are barking nonstop at the refs for forty minutes in their quavering but loud voices because the refs just don't seem to understand the fact that the Titans are much too good to commit any fouls.

Can you imagine how much worse they're going to be if opposing CCIW fans start feeding into that mentality?

As one NPU wag put it, "I wish that Illinois Wesleyan would put the bag with all of the players' uniforms on the fan bus. That way, the fan bus might not show up."

Rico Powell: 28 pts, 14 rebs
T.J. Gardner: 14 pts

This was a competitive game three-quarters of the way through, but the Vikings were not able to slow down either of UWO's very talented 6'5 wings, Michael Metcalf-Grassman (28 and 12) and Brandon Beck (22 and 6). The Vikings had a lot of success driving to the rim in the first half, but didn't compensate by emphasizing the "kick" part of the drive-and-kick in the second half once UWO adjusted and began collapsing into the paint.

The amazing thing is how young UWO is; Metcalf-Grassman, who was averaging 25 ppg coming into today, is only a sophomore, and Beck is only a freshmen. Their supporting cast is mostly underclassmen as well, and the big man, 6'8 Jonah Rindfleish, is only a junior. Titans HC Matt Lewis may have another ring coming in his near future.

This was a real eye-opener of a performance by Rico Powell. I watched him practice all fall, so I knew that he was good. I didn't realize that he was this good until today.

This brutal schedule NPU's playing won't get one bit easier, as Anderson, yet another 2024 D3 tourney team on the NPU sked, enters the crackerbox on Tuesday night. I watched the Ravens take apart Carthage earlier today, and AU looked very impressive in doing so.

Hey Greg, probably not your call, but very curious about NPU password blocking the archives this year. Anyway to watch the game back?

Greek Tragedy

If you are familiar with ziggy and Knightslappy, they run d3datacast, have a show on youtube, busy on Tweeter etc. Anyway, they had a hot takes episode and I did predict that IWU would "do the league and cup double" and make it to the Sweet 16 this season...so, I haven't seen anything that would tell me IWU won't run the table this year. I'll feed the bear.

For the record, last year I did predict that Trine wins the MIAA, Whitewater doesn't win the WIAC and Elmhurst has a better season than Carthage.

IWU jumps 12 spots from #16 to #4. Seems a little extreme. They beat preseason #24 Cal Lutheran and then smoked #2 Platteville by 20 in their Jack Sikma tournament. Cal Lutheran is now 1-2 with another loss to Whitworth. Platteville is now 3-1 after needing OT to beat NCC. IWU's other 3 wins are against winless teams, Stout, Westminster (MO) and Webster.

WIAC fans should visit some CCIW and MIAA sites. These private schools have great facilities even though they often succumb to WIAC excellence. It's why they play the games.  If you go to Calvin or IWU, you might meet one of these celebrities like ziggy, Knightslappy or IWUhoops.  They have biases just like we all do.  If the weather doesn't hurt the chickens too much, I might travel a bit this winter.

Everyone hypes their team to some extent, but relentless hype? That seems a little extreme.

I actually don't think IWU should be ranked that high either.  I've watched or attended all the games.  Yes, taking down Platteville bigtime was by far their highest moment so far, but in other games they've played somewhat to the level of their weaker opponents.  I would have them at something like 10-12 in the rankings.  Not 4th.  No hype from me.  IWU has depth, some really nice players, but they also have weaknesses with inconsistency and not the normal good three point shooting of top IWU teams of the past.  They will have a good season, especially if they continue to emphasize and play good defense, but running the CCIW schedule is very unlikely.  Probably some losses on the road to Carthage or Carroll.  We'll see   I was a student when our Titans were undefeated in conference play. That team was worth hyping.  :)
