Quote from: Redtooth on December 03, 2024, 12:06:39 PMNever been a huge fan of putting too much stock in post season awards, but the AFCA All-American team was announced earlier today and Aaron Syverson not being named to the first team QB slot is a little ridiculous...the first team QB is Boyes from Cortland who won the title last season.

Syverson 3,916 yards 46TDs 4INTs 76% completion  rush 48 att -41 yards -.85 avg 1TD
Boyes    2,585 yards 25TDs 1INTs 68% completion  rush 93 att 542 yards 5.8 avg 6TD

Maybe they will get a chance to play against each other in a few weeks......

A certain QB in Naperville wasn't selected who may get a chance to play both in the next 3 weeks.  Really tough when you have 3 incredible QBs in a given year.  Added the rushing stats as well as I think they are relevant (and i am biased).

Lehnen  2,355 yards 31TDs 4INTs 69% completion  rush 58 att 752 yards 13.0 avg 12TDs

I think this is a perfect example of the point I was making. You can make a case for any of these 3 being 1st or 2nd team in some order. But especially at QB, there's a lot of value in seeing how they perform over the next 2-4 weeks. It's a little reductive to just give it to the last QB standing, but if Syverson goes off down the stretch and beats one of these guys head to head, that's not a small thing. Conversely, if one of those teams gets bounced and it's because that QB ends up having a day they threw a bunch of picks, that's probably enough for them to get slotted behind the other worthy candidates.

These are all great quarterbacks and all could make a great first-team selection. Thanks, NCC2010, for adding the rushing stats, because those are super relevant.

Quote from: SJUTEX60 on December 02, 2024, 08:31:52 PMI don't think you should make much of total raw NCAA stats like Hobart-like anything, you need a modifier| Strength of opponent schedule

Case in point-St Norbert #3 defense in the country
Lost to Stevens Point 24-3 | Held Stevens Point to 257 yds
Gustavus held UWSP to 203 yds
Gustavus is ranked #97 in defense
Gustavus played much tougher competition than St Norbert throughout-
Another perhaps more relevant comparison
Hobart "held" RPI to 357 yds
UW Lax held RPI to 252
UW Lax is ranked #106 in total defense
Those are the facts
Susquehanna has no doubt a very good offense, for sure and we will find out vs SJU how good

BTW SJU ranked #29 with opponents such as Wartburg|UWL|Bethel X2

I understand...I don't really take a lot of stock in national stats. I just hope SJU doesn't get it into their head that Susquehanna isn't a strong team. We have a history of playing down to opponents.

Faunch,

Your comment about playing down to opponents had me do a quick history search......over the last ten seasons SJU is 103-16.........one non playoff season 8-2 in 2023.  Of those losses; 8 were regular season and 8 in the playoffs.
2023- WW and GAC
2022- Bethel and Wart
2021- LINFIELD
2020- No season
2019- Cord and WW
2018- UMHB
2017- UST and NCC
2016- UST and Osh Kosh
2015- UST and UST
2014- Cord and Wart

In that history I can see two games; GAC in 23 and Cord in 19 that would support "playing down"......everyone else was playoff caliber or better.  From 17-today only one loss (WW in 23) by more 4 points.  I believe this group will get up to play whoever shows up in Collegeville moving forward over the next month.

Assuming this is what Faunch meant to share

SJU13

I think "playing down" to opponents can also be the wins that were closer than expected. There have been moments when it feels like we're touching the hot stove in the first half or until the 4th quarter. The loses are the times we got burned. Likely perception than statistical analysis.

The highlights make me laugh as you see the decrease in UW-LX's need to signal the first down themselves. It's been discussed plenty but there definitely seemed to be some gamesmanship being played. Maybe to wind people up and draw some PFs.

No argument that we've had an amazing run the past ten seasons.
I would also add the Augsburg game last year and Concordia and Gustavus this year to your list. We could have easily lost at Augsburg last year (Auggies had a 20-18 lead in the 4th) and were literally 51 seconds away from losing in Moorhead this season. Against Gustavus this season we really didn't look good in the first half and led only 7-0.

I get it that those teams usually elevate their game when playing the Johnnies and now that it is the playoffs I'm sure the focus will be even sharper. I would argue that Susquehana is at an equal playing level or better then Concordia or GAC...but I'm really only guessing.

Faunch,

Both you and SJU13 bring up a great point regarding our Johnnies not always meeting expectations for blowing out or controlling/dominating during some of our wins over the years...the days of coaching for/with John have definitely given me a interesting perspective.  While we never feared or felt another team was going to/could beat us we also knew that any/all teams playing us could make their season/careers by doing so.  The success we have had with John and Gary should never be taken for granted...winning at this level is incredibly hard and a hell of an achievement.

Playing to the opponent is a two-way street.  Good point.

I realize that this is neither here nor there, but was Saturday's play by play announcer, Tom Wheeler, the voice of Gustavus athletics?

Fantastic channel, AO.  Thanks (and almost thanks to faunch ;) ).

It has extended highlights of many playoff games, including BU.  And a number of interesting regular season games.  Whoever runs this channel is a dedicated D3 fan.

YES on ESPN+, they would not allow local ad reads so WBHR did their own radio broadcast with their own local advertising
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!
