Interesting stuff on Susquehanna qb.

Son of former Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich, who was captain of Princeton team. While high school creds aren't a guarantee or even an indicator of college success, the son has done well. Attended the same school as my last boss's kids. He was county player of the year in the Annapolis area, which produces some solid talent. That award usually goes to a guy from private school powers like Archbishop Spalding Honorable mention in the Washington Post's All-Met and was the QB for Maryland in an annual showdown with Pennsylvania.  Transferred from Marist, where he appeared in one Pioneer League game as a freshman.

Pretty mobile kid. I hope the d line plants him deep in the backfield with regularity.

Kind of how we felt about Roste.  ;)

Limited sample size, but I feel like there's a calmness to his game this year that is different than last year too.  He was obviously still very good in prior years, but seemed just a tiny bit too fast / impatient (to my non-expert eye).  This year it just seems under control for him.

I'm assuming there's a positive correlation that the OL play this year has also improved.

Very much enjoyed the SJU postgame- both the players and head coach were interesting and fun to listen to. I'm a SJU fan for remainder of playoffs.
I do have a concern. Coach makes it clear SJU has the best QB and receiver group in D3. Although I agree, can SJU win it all w an offense so reliant on the pass? In looking at Stagg Bowl champions back to 2016, only one had more pass attempts than runs- that was UMHB and it was only a one play difference. Do you feel SJU needs more balance to win it all or do you roll the dice w a pass heavy attack?

Emma17, that's always a concern of mine, but they just always seem to make it work.  I was super worried last weekend with arctic temps, but they made me a believer, again.  Our OC was a record breaking WR at NDSU and then played in the NFL, so he likes to run a wide open offense. ;)
They use the short passing game much like a running game.

Like the Vikings' offenses of the mid-1970's. Jerry Burns was an underrated offensive coordinator.

Ice Bear agrees the kids is an excellent QB. Kid has a coool story and has an impressive fb IQ. Ice believes he will certainly have some moments on Saturday. The Bear believes Syverson and Co. will just have more.

Ice believes that the Johnnie's D must take this O as serious as a heart attack as they are talented enough to punish anyone who overlooks them. Ice doesn't think the stout Johnnie D will do that though.

Ice says he is impressed with the kid being named the county player of the year. That area certainly produces some quality players.

That piece about the short pass game is spot on. It's the old west coast offense.

I was excited when the first scoring drive of the second half for SJU in the UWL game was run heavy. I was impressed with Bohmert. Great speed and vision.

My son once got a wedding invite and his first reaction was to shake his head and say, "Don't people check the Johnnie football schedule before scheduling these things?"

Two fun true stories; back when I coached with John at SJU one of our backup QBs waited until Monday films to ask John about whether he should skip the game Saturday to attend his sister's wedding......not missing a beat John replied "tell your sister you will come to her second wedding"

In late August this year the online fan group for an FCS team that I follow provided an email template for Fall Weddings listed below:

NO WEDDINGS

Let's get this out of the way, Congratulations.  You're getting married.

Now, please do not schedule your wedding on any of the dates below (2024 Montana Football Schedule).  There are 352 other days to choose from.

I told my wife when we were engaged that the only way we were having a fall wedding is if it were during a Johnnie bye week. Luckily, she is also a football fan. We had a June wedding.

I have no doubt the SJU team will take their opponent very seriously-but we as fans can know SJU will roll.
Now, do I expect the SJU D to give up yards and maybe points on the first drive-yes, that is the MO over the years-but then adjustments are made and I am confident the D will play a good game-maybe 2 ints by the D as well.

Emma, I share your concern. As you get deeper into the playoffs talent emerges, in particular talent up front, and the teams that dominate the LOS usually win. The dynastic Mt Union and UWW teams were dominant up front and excelled at taking away a team's strength to make them win another way. If you were a strong running team they stacked the box and dared you to throw. If you were a strong passing team they tried to confuse you and were able to move your QB off their spot. Offensively they were almosty always very strong running the ball with talented/capable QB's/WR's and a great balance between Run/Pass.  Teams that can run and/or pass simply have more ways to win against better talent. St Johns has won many games between Erdman and Syverson years with pass heavy offenses and low run outputs. They can do it, I just think it's a lot harder the deeper you go.

North Central has done it with a 60-65% running offense focus and a lethal downfield passing game that dates back to Broc Rutter and now Luke Lehnen. Lehnen is also their leading rusher this year so adds another dimension to their attack.

I'll be interested to see how St John's does over the next 2 weeks as the competition stiffens and teams with more talent focus on Syverson and Wheeler, etc.

The loss of running Wheeler likely hindered our ability to look like a better running team. I think from a maximum talent utilization perspective we'd still be slinging it with Syverson heavily even if we could average 5+ a carry.

Catching Wheeler was held to 3 catches for 28 yards against LAX. Our other 1k yards receiving WR seemed to have a good day along with our 700+ yards receiving TE. This isn't the throw a 50/50 ball to your tall TE of last year.
