The Third Division

Perhaps he was getting sick of having a new job each of the past 3 seasons.

Abilene Christian D1 offensive coordinator(8-4) left to take the head coach job at Cisco JUCO (4-4) and then coached tight ends at Tarleton D1. He wasn't fired from any of those positions for anyone wondering.

Yeah, but wondering why he only stayed a year?  Did Padron leave on his own, mutual or did he get let go?  I had heard he put in for the Head Coaching position at Temple High School when Stewart stepped down.

JUCO HC isn't everyone's cup of tea.. I don't blame him.

As for Padron, he was let go. I don't think the school really wanted to make big fuss about it with official press release but from the folks I've talked to yes he was fired.

Interesting comments on the Instagram post about coach Lee coming back... Kade Renfro posted "let's Ride"

Very, that would seem to mean Renfro is returning for next season. I saw on his profile he was wearing a big knee brace recently, that would explain him disappearing after the early scrimmage.

Knowing coach Lee, he will likely have a guy or two that he plans to bring in at QB also... Lee always had a good eye for gunslingers. Kyle King and Hammack were Lee era transfers.

HSU AC Matt Fanning (TE/Dev squad/asst strength) is leaving to become the HFC/AD at Alvord.  For those like me not famliar with that part of the state, Alvord HS is in 2A Division 1, District 6.  The total enrollment at 2AD1 schools is 182-253.  The town itself, midway between Bowie and Decatur, has about 1350 people in it.

Dillan Botts ended up at Rice (https://x.com/dillan_botts/status/1878096033667748352) and AJ Williams III at NMSU (https://x.com/AjWilli04/status/1878598190632718507).

Also picked up a commit from Joel Valdez of Cherokee.  They're a 1-A Division 2 team with like 45 people in the HS.  I remember playing there growing up and the Gym was so small that the 3 point line went out of bounds and if you wanted to inbound the ball on one baseline you had to stand in the doorway to the hallway.  Pretty cool to see a kid from a school that small get an offer.

In Portal news, I saw that Devon Freitag commited to UMHB after transferring from UW-Platteville. (https://x.com/DevonFreitag96/status/1872829090476265787)

and Quinton Hall transferred in from Division 2 Henderson State (https://x.com/quintonh_04/status/1869872222636003580)

AJ Williams ended up at New Mexico State, for him and Dillan I wonder if that means preferred walk on or an actual scholarship.

Coach Lee doing coach Lee things already in the portal.

Mouser looks good... 6'6" but can move pretty fast and can make all the throws. Played some at Kilgore JUCO and played in spring game and no fall action at UTEP but is certainly a D1 caliber QB.

Was a 2 star by 247 and a 3 star by rivals/espn. Had offers to UTEP and Tulsa out of high school. Looks good, high ceiling.

Cory Hogue reports (paywalled) that ETBU will be searching for a new OC, their third in three years, as OC Ryan Smith will be named HC at a Dallas-area HS.  HPU is also looking for a new DL coach.

Edit:  Smith, who prior to ETBU was HC at Nelson fka SAGU, was hired by Grapevine (not paywalled).   The Mustangs were 0-10 last season.

I remember when we used to call SAGU "SWAG".  That was fun.  I just learned about Nelson yesterday. The fun is gone.

Not a lot of old timers around any more, but long-time poster (#7!) and one of Ralph Turner's fellow d3boards.com HoFers, Warren Thompson, passed away recently.  Pat posted an obituary on the Commonwealth Conference MBB board (Warren started that board in 2005) which can be seen here.  Warren dropped off the boards in 2019 but prior to that seemed like the kind of guy you'd be happy to meet in person if you had the chance.  RIP, WT.

Ralph Turner

Sad to hear that.
Warren was a cordial and consummate gentleman.
