Lynchburg made 0 plays at the end and the Maroons took advantage.  The Hornets had a 5 point lead with 17 seconds to go.  They miss 3 free throws while Jackson Bell hits 2 threes, including one at the buzzer.  What a comeback!

Lynchburg had a 10 point lead with 32 seconds left in the game.  Roanoke didn't deserve to win the game but they didn't give up and kept fouling (Lynchburg shot horrible from the free throw line) and got themselves back into it. Game was back and forth all first half with RC taking a 3 point lead into half.  From what I saw RC had a hard time scoring, our defense looked good but we weren't shooting the ball too well. Second half Lynchburg took control of the game at the 6 minute mark and kept the lead until the final 0.2 when Jackson Bell hit a 3 to give the final 80-79 Roanoke score.

I'm really glad Roanoke didn't lose but this was a concerning game when you compare it to how we played against Virginia Wesealyn.  RC seems to play better at home than away. RC plays against Shenandoah on Saturday.

Jackets have made HUGE strides since November! Now-That being said, that doesent mean that we  wont have trouble with a team with big inside guys when we shoot poorly- WE ABSOLUTELY WILL! Heck, we'll have problems even when we shoot well but not as badly, but I think Josh has done a stellar job with these kids and working with what he has rather than griping about what he doesent! This sets up the VWU game in Va Beach on January 29 to be huge as long as neither of us stumbles beforehand! Jackets are on a ROLL!

^^^ I know VWU is always in the hunt and has become a rival just behind H-SC, but don't overlook the earlier game (Sat. 1/25) at Roanoke who are 6-1 in conference, 12-3 overall. Last night they were down by 10 with 32 seconds to go and won on a last second three pointer at Lynchburg. Whatever one's thoughts about how they got themselves in that position in the first place, you have to admire the "don't quit" mentality that got them the win.

Also, let's not overlook the two games in between -- at Ferrum on Saturday and vs Bridgewater next Wednesday.

H-SC needs to step it up. These last three games have been pretty poor performances from them. Especially the last two. Despite both being wins, they performed well below that they are capable of.

Save for the one outlier against Bridgewater, their three point shooting over the last 6 games has been downright ghastly.
6-33
9-30
7-25
6-24
10-19
6-26
Total: 44-157 (28.0%)

And it's not just a recent trend either. While they haven't been quite that bad all year, they are also only shooting .318 as a team, and Colin Radcliffe is the only player with at least one three attempt a game who is shooting over 33%

Im not overlooking ANYBODY !! I certainly didn't mean it if it sounded like that! I just had that date in my mind because its a closer game for me to go to in person than driving up to the COTU since I live in Hampton Roads! We can't afford to overlook or take ANYONE lightly because our margin for error is thin to begin with! We played about as well as we could have last night against the Captains and we were fortunate to win it! Its always a back and forth battle against those guys. Theyre well coached and always present problems for us! Roanoke is playing extremely well, also and so is Bridgewater- the ODAC is always a minefield and I really believe that prepares us for the postseason if we are fortunate enough to make it there because it makes us battle tested!

Today's most compelling ODAC game has to be RMC at Ferrum. Last season RMC barely won it's game there. The Panthers are 4-2 in conference and 11-3 overall.

After Wednesday's disappointing loss to Roanoke, Lynchburg has extra motivation going into the Fish Tank.

SU is at Roanoke, Averett at Bridgewater, EMU at Randolph.

Which Guilford team will show up at W&L?

H-SC has the non-conference game at Mary Washington.

y_jack_lok

At Ferrum, another back and forth game for RMC much like Wednesday's game vs CNU. Twelve lead changes with no lead for either team more than six points until the two free throws near the end resulting in the 73-65 final score. The Jackets (or "Hornets" as one of the Ferrum announcers consistently called them) got good play off the bench from freshman guard Oliver Jones (11 points, five rebounds, two steals).

Roanoke and VWU both win at home to stay at one loss in-conference. Ferrum now has three conference losses. Guilford stays at two losses with a win at W&L.

Bridgewater downs Averett and EMU wins at Randolph. H-SC holds off a late Mary Washington comeback effort to win by five.

It was another lackluster offensive game for Roanoke. Game was within 6-10 points until the middle of the 2nd half. Roanoke went on a big run and would win 70-52. Roanoke looked really good against Virginia Wesleyan a week ago and haven't looked near as good since then. Roanoke has a tough game against a good Ferrum team that gave RMC a tough game on Wednesday. If Roanoke plays like they have the last 2 games it will be a loss.

Looking at Wednesday's ODAC games the games that stand out is Mary Washington at Guilford and Roanoke at Ferrum. We have a little more than a month left until the ODAC tourney (2/26) this season has been very entertaining so far.

^^^Yes, Roanoke at Ferrum should be a very informative game. The UMW at Guilford game is also interesting, though not as meaningful.

I hope RMC is ready to take care of business at home tonight. Bridgewater's first year head coach is a former RMC assistant who should know how to prepare his players for what the Jackets are likely to do.

Roanoke with a complete win at Ferrum tonight. Roanoke came out hot and built a 37-8 lead within the first 15 minutes of the game.  Roanoke would go into half up 52-24 and would keep at least a 25 point lead the rest of the night and would win 99-66.  Most complete game for Roanoke in the past 2 weeks. Roanoke has a tall task on Saturday against great Randolph Macon a team I'm certain we haven't beaten in over 10 years (I'll have to look into it but it has been a long time).

In other news:

Washington and Lee wins in a close game at EMU 75-70

Virginia Wesleyan wins at Shenandoah 88-62

Guilford wins at home against Mary Washington 72-59

Hampden Sydney wins at Randolph 105-92. Game was tied at half and HSC pulled away.

Lynchburg blows out Averett 87-57

Bridgewater loses big at Randolph Macon 62-89.

It was a good, though inconsistent, game for RMC last night. The Jackets built a 22 point lead in the first half that got trimmed to 15 at halftime, then further trimmed to seven points five minutes into the second half. The Jackets finally took over and pushed the lead to as much as 32 late in the game. The final score, as noted by Seatfiller, was 89-62. There were no particularly notable individual performances. No RMC player scored more than 13 points. Just good team basketball with 30 assists on 38 made field goals.

The Jackets now have two tough road games -- at Roanoke on Saturday and at VWU next Wednesday. Seatfiller is off slightly. Roanoke's last win vs RMC was at Roanoke 91-85 on 1/16/2016. So only nine years. A break in that streak might happen on Saturday. It's definitely the ODAC game of the day.

The Tigers faced a fired up Randolph squad that was looking for a huge win.  Randolph shot the ball extremely well, and quickly, and made many shots with a high degree of difficulty.  They either shot a 3 or drove - not a lot of passing and assists.  Their press caused some problems for a little while.  In the second half, H-SC was efficient and workmanlike, moving the ball, getting good shots and making free throws.  The Wildcats had no answer for Shane Fernald, with 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists (it seemed like there were more).

Every team has reached the halfway point of the season.   The second half is going to be a dogfight with more games among the top 5 teams.  There is also going to be a big fight at the bottom to avoid missing the tournament.  I just noticed on the bottom of the ODAC basketball standings page that there will be only 8 teams in the tournament, not the usual 10.

Wow I do not remember that, I'm going to have to look it up.  Thanks for correcting me.

^^^ The RMC win streak begins on 2/20/2016, so Roanoke's last win was the game before that. I found it by going to the "History" link on the schedule page on the RMC website. The Roanoke website shows the same thing: https://roanokemaroons.com/sports/mens-basketball/opponent-history/randolph-macon-college/1
