Quote from: Macon on February 04, 2025, 05:02:40 PMRMC fans, I just noticed a change in the RMC roster.  Joe Joe Dubrul is no longer listed.  He only played one game and has not been in uniform for weeks but on the sidelines, I'm assuming because of injury.

Wishing him well.
Ill ask one of my frat bros.....It also could be an academic casualty. Coach Merkel and our administration makes that extremely priority. If you ever ask about or suggest a young athlete to one of our coaches in any sport, the first question is about their grades, and thats a GOOD THING! OUR KIDS GRADUATE INTO THE GAME OF LIFE!

You may be right about an academic casualty given the timing, just as J-term ends.  Not knowing, I just thought it may be what I was seeing, not being in uniform.  I initially was hoping he'd add experience, size, and depth for the Jackets.  Either way, I wish him well in his future.

As to your recruitment question on grades, I had a frat brother's son really wanting to play for RMC.  The process was very short as he didn't have grades and ended up playing at a DI school.

Another topic:  RMC currently has 4 teams in the Top 20:  Men's basketball, Women's basketball, Baseball (preseason), and Softball (preseason).  Not to mention the Football team in the fall.  While this is common for RMC, many schools don't have one team in the Top 20 during a school year.  Congrats to RMC and especially to Coach Burns for his leadership.

Roanoke with a big win today at home against Guilford 78-53.  Roanoke played tough on defense and held a 39-28 advantage going into half.  After half Roanoke would extend the lead to 20 in the final 10 minutes and for the most part that's where it would stay.  Guilford had some uncharacteristic numbers as they only shot 30% for the game and shot only 37% from the FT line. Roanoke continues to puzzle me as we're a true wild card team who can look really good at times (against VWU and Guilford) and can look like we haven't gotten a win at times (against Lynchburg and EMU).  One thing is certain Roanoke plays better at home.

In other ODAC news:

Washington and Lee gets beat badly at Ferrum 68-101

Randolph Macon wins at Shenandoah 73-60

EMU gets a big win at Bridgewater 70-62. That has to hurt Bridgewater's ODAC tourney chances.

Virginia Wesleyan loses at Hampden Sydney 47-66

Randolph gets destroyed at Lynchburg 78-106. Randolph started off the season well and now sit with a record of 7-13.

^^^ That's a great win for Roanoke.

RMC's win at Shenandoah was hard earned. The Jackets built 14 point leads in the first half and in the second half. Both times Shenandoah cut it to four points. In the second half it was with just over three minutes left. Following an RMC timeout Keishawn Pulley, Jr., who was 2 of 8 from beyond the arc up to that point, hit threes on back to back possesions to push the lead back to 10 with just under two minutes remaining and held SU to one free throw the rest of the way.

I have a hard time understanding how Shenandoah is only 2-10 in ODAC play. They are a very good team. At least they are well suited to playing against a team that plays RMC's style.

The young Tigers continue to improve.  The hard work and effort in practices is showing in the team defense.  The last two opponents have been held below 50 points.  Holding the strong Marlin squad to 47 tonight is a huge confidence booster.  Tough shooting night for Adam Brazil as he had 6 points and was 0-7 from 3 point range.  He still had a huge effect on the game with 6 assists vs 1 turnover, 3 steals and brilliant defense.  He outproduced the two Marlin starting guards - combined. It was a hard night on guards with one exception. Tonight was a bit of a coming out party for freshman Travis Stickney.  He has been a steady all around presence in the Tiger starting lineup all year, but stepped to the forefront with 20 points tonight.  The other starting freshman, John Campbell, is getting better all the time.  J Campbell is long and a tremendous leaper; his defensive improvement might be the key to the uptick in Tiger team defense.  Shane Fernald added 15 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Colin Radcliffe continues to provide bench scoring with 13 tonight including 3 of 6 from the arc.  The Marlins are a gritty team; they fought back to within 4 at one point in the second half.  H-S was able to close strong.

I agree that Shenandoah's ODAC record is a mystery.

Fairly shocking margins of defeat/victory in the H-SC/VWU and Roanoke/Guilford games.

Especially when you consider Adam Brazil shot 2-15 and H-SC still won by 19 points. Freshman Travis Stickney had by far the best performance of his career to date with 20 points on only 8 shots. He alone outscored VWU's top three leading scorers for the season 20-17

That was an all systems fail type offensive performance by VWU. Four players combined to play 100 minutes and made just four shots on 33 attempts.

As I had outlined previously, that was a critical loss for Guilford. It's not a lock by any means, but if you had to make one team an odds on favorite for 5th then it would be Guilford. Now tied for 5th with VWU and they lose the tiebreaker to them. They lose the tiebreaker to Macon, and it's very improbable that they even tie now. They lose the tiebreaker to Roanoke. They'll have to beat H-SC in Farmville to gain a tiebreaker over them, but with three losses, they'll have to be hanging on a prayer that H-SC loses another game as well, but admittedly that is very possible as they go to Roanoke.

I'm not familiar anymore with what the three+ team tiebreaker scenarios are, but I would make an educated guess they will likely lose in every scenario three+ team tiebreaker if they don't win at H-SC. And if it involves any teams but H-SC, they will 100% lose every tiebreaker scenario because they didn't beat any of the other top five teams.

VWU is off today. The top six teams in conference standings who play today are each matched up against one of the bottom six teams. So we have a schedule conducive to upsets. The most interesting game for me is Shenandoah at Lynchburg. It's Hornets vs Hornets. In their earlier meeting at SU, Lynchburg won 72-68 and they have home court advantage today. But the way Shenandoah played against RMC on Wednesday has me rating this game a toss-up.

No upsets yesterday.  The favorites generally cruised to wins, except Lynchburg.  Shenandoah was down 15 with 4:27 to go and tied it at :19, but, after a LU bucket, couldn't get the tying shot to go down as time expired.

The Tigers have a huge week ahead with Guilford at home on Wednesday and Roanoke on the road on Saturday.  This week has been looming large on the schedule for a long time.  The road to the #1 seed in the tournament is a tough one for H-SC.

I heard something I liked from the EMU announcer during the H-SC game.  In a play on the ACC "Tobacco Road" rivalries, he referred to the upcoming game with BC as the Poultry Road rivalry.

I caught the end of that game. That bucket by Piercen Young of LU with four seconds left was a really tough shot from just inside the arc. SU raced the ball past half court and called a time out to set up a play. They lobbed the ball into the post. The LU player who defended the guy inbounding the ball came from nowhere to block the shot attempt. Two big time plays by LU to avoid suffering the same fate they did against Guilford and W&L.

I attended the Guilford at Roanoke game.  Roanoke is good, but the Quakers played poorly.  Only one player had a decent shooting night.  The 17 the Quakers have won, they've usually shot well.  The 5 they lost ... not so well.  Up and down.

Here's hoping they show up in Farmville tomorrow night!

Macon

With no RMC game tomorrow, I'll be watching this game played in the woods outside Farmville.

Roanoke got a good win against Randolph last Saturday 94-66. It was a 15 point game at half that quickly got out of control.  Randolph definitely doesn't look like the same team at the beginning of the season when we only squeaked out a 6 point win in December.  I'm wondering if they had some people get hurt or something I was impressed by them at the start of the season and now they probably won't make the ODAC tourney.

Looking at tomorrows games, Roanoke goes up against a up and down W and L team. The big game is Guilford at Hampden Sydney.  HSC will be pumped up for that game with their only ODAC loss coming against Guilford last month. Randolph Macon is off tomorrow.

Yes Macon is ahead by fifteen-hundredths.  If HSC defeats both Guilford tonight at home and Roanoke on the road on Saturday, the quality of the wins may make that up.  Have to see if that happens and what happens after Macon plays VWU next Wednesday night when HSC is off.  At this point, you take care of what you can and, for HSC, that is Guilford tonight.  The next game is always the most important!

Safe travels to everyone who is going to games tonight!
