Could Cortland run the regular season table? Seems as though some of the toughest teams that they will face, regular season, are behind them! Also, with the rankings coming out tommorow, where does everybody see the NY teams being ranked in the national picture?

big win for cortland.......looks like maycock is raking with power this spring........any reason why the front of D3 says that this is cortlands first win over a top 30 team? +k to jdex for continually using such few words to describe so much

Yeah, yeah  - I meant fourth not first.  You can never trust a press release...and I should know better since I did help post a story on CS win over Carthage.

Yea

c-state19,
i agree that brockport and oneonta play us very tough but this team is pretty deep all over. u can forget anybody beating us because of  4 games in 2 days(weekend doubleheaders), we are going to roll out 4 starting pitchers better than anybody else even has. dougher, jweid, zorgeleswki, rockfeld along with a very strong bullpen makes this team real tough pitching wise! the lineup is just as strong and we are getting contributions from all over the place. if u look at the box scores from the first 13 games, there has to be at least 12 different kids that have multiple hit games! also if you look at the boxscores u relize that this isn't just a team that has 8 good position players, we have like 14. all i'm saying is that this team is as deep a team that has ever laced 'em up at cortland and that is saying alot! good luck beating this team in any double elimination tournament  before the world series!

i agree but these are college kids, everyone has an off day, case in point the 8 error game against IC two years ago

CSt19, what part of the front page are you referring? Just punched it up and among headlines: Cortland State Remains Unbeaten .......and the lead, "In their fourth game against a top 30 team, Cortland ....improved to 12-0 with a 5-1 victory over 10th ranked Montclair St." And nearby remains the coaches' preseason spring poll.
Presume we've overlooked something? Wouldn't be the first time

jdex,

It was in correct in the original article.  It has since been changed to be accurate... just a little typo.

Cstate,

That is why we play the games... so we have this type of thing to talk about.  I for one look forward to the challenge of competing against a strong team or program...  I am sure that every player on every team has that same feeling and will to compete.  Other wise they would not be on the field.

Remember, it is harder to go out day after day with very little chance of winning against an opponent then it is to be on the top teams who always have a chance to win.  I respect the kids on those types of teams probably more then I do the ones on the top teams.  They put them selves on the line dily just becuase they love the game.

When we post... we need to remember to respect them too.  As they don't fear an opponent... they relish the experience of competing.

OK, I will get down from my old coaching soap box.
;D

Bob Maxwell

oops, I got the last one wrong... should be to Scuba, not cstate... confused myself with reading the quotes.  my apologiess cstate, you were making my point about them being collge kids.

cstate19

noted, i was confused as heck as i was reading your post, i kept re-reading it to see if i missed something thinking about what you could ppossibly refer to

scuba16

bob,
Kinda agree, much harder to go out there and play when ther is less chance to win. I guess anybody that is a competitor relishes in the chance to play, compete against a team that is considered to be better, thats the competitive nature of people. But u also have people that shy away from that type of situation. obviously the teams that are competitive vs better teams have players that are very competitive and won't back down. if u have a pitcher like that anything is possible!
I disagree about the kids on lesser teams loving the game anymore than the kids on the top teams for the simple fact that this is the end of the road for 99% of the kids playing. Not many kids play on after college baseball. I consider any kid who makes a college team to be a pretty good player. I know the kids hs i coach hear me time and time again say, if you can play college baseball, start on a college team, ur a pretty darn good player!
I think in addition to respecting the kids that play on lesser teams we need to also respect the kids on the top teams just as much. Remember the kids or the top programs didn't get to the top of the heap by being lazy. They worked hard for it, cortland, ithaca, rpi have put in some time becoming the elite d-3 programs in ny and are not going to give it up without a fight.
I think cortland has the best team, im not hiding that fact.  Offense, defense, pitching and intangables like a stud catcher who nobody is going to run on, experienced coaching, winning program and some team depth give cortland a hand up on other teams. I think they will ultimately win in a double elimination style tournaments, like the sunyac and the ny regional because of the before-mentioned points.
You don't have to fear and opponent to get beat by one, the better team usually wins in the end!

Scuba...

We do see eye to eye on this...

One thing though, I didn't say that kids on lesser teams love the game more then the ones on top teams.  You can take from what I said that I do respect all the boys who play college baseball at any level...  What I said is that "I respect the kids on those types of teams probably more then I do the ones on the top teams".

The point being that at some point in the season you have to really admire them for getting back up and going out to compete again, after losing time after time.

We have all been at both ends of a game where one team gets drubbed... it is hard to deal with.  Just like losing is...  When you see the boys on a team run onto the field and play hard despite being down 10 or more runs... you have to admire them.

Your right, you don't have to fear an opponent to be beaten by them... but if you do fear them, you will never beat them!

I think Cortland has a good team... but don't think they will run the table.  Someone will beat them along the way.  And as for winning a double elimination tournament.  It may happen, but I think there is a lot of baseball to be played and I am sure we will see many surprises before its over.
;)

scuba16

right bob,
but what are u supposed to do when u are down 10?? not hustle on the field?? i just think that there is a way to play sports at all times, hard. up 10 or down 10 it should be the same! i agree with your point, it is hard to keep getting it handed to you and keep coming back. the teams that do that should be commended but competing is more fun than winning or losing! when those kids get older, they are going to realize that it wasn't the wins or losses that they will miss, it is the laying it on the line, competition that they will miss!
Cortland may run the table, they may not. I know 1 thing though, Win or lose they will hustle, play hard to the end and shake hands either way, the way it should be!
