After the July 11 D3Football Daily Dose article (http://www.d3football.com/dailydose/2009/07/11/conference-cost-cutters/) about cost-cutting measures being taken by some conferences, I thought it might be helpful to have a long-term place for discussion of these issues.

In volleyball, the NCAC is doing something new this fall.  On two weekends, all nine teams will go to one location to play four matches during a weekend.  This allows playing half of the 16-match conference schedule with just two overnight stays.  One of these weekends is being held at Allegheny, on the eastern edge of NCAC territory, and the other will be at Earlham, the westernmost team (aside from Wabash, which is all-male).

In the UAA, that is the way volleyball has worked at least since I have followed vball around 2003, (2 round robin weekends, and one tournament weekend if I remember correctly). It ends up being pretty great events because of all the energy surrounding those weekends.

I beleive that the SUNYAC has done this with volleyball for the last 15 years or more...  this type of scheduling lends its self to volleyball because of the type of tournaments they play.

Could it work with other sports like Soccer, baseball, softball?  Others...

I wouldn't think it would be good for soccer...2 games in a day is a lot of leg work...but Ill ask a couple players I know what they think.

The Midwest Conference has been doing it for a while now in softball. They have all ten of their teams, five from the North Division and five from the South Division come together in a centrally located spot to play five crossover games against the other division's schools over a Saturday and Sunday. The rest of the season the schools only play teams in their own division.

For soccer, I didn't say it clearly, but was thinking of perhaps 4 teams going to one site and playing either 2 games in 2 days or 3 games in 3 days.  Save on travel... by all going to one site.  perhaps it doesn't led to soccer...

I think it would work for baseball and softball... just like it does for volleyball.
