The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel has approved playing rule changes for 2024

https://www.ncaa.org/news/2024/4/18/media-center-substitution-rules-changes-approved-for-di-mens-soccer.aspx

One rule is limited to D1 Men's soccer, but I suspect it will end up making D3 men's soccer a bit more attractive to some players.  Starting in Fall 2024 in D1 men's soccer, there is NO RE-ENTRY in either half.  My guess is that this will cut down on playing time for some players who used to come in just to give the starters a break, which could particularly affect some players early in their college careers.  It also may mean more players play the whole game, especially at schools with a gap in quality between starters and reserves.  My guess is that some D3 coaches will use this rule change as a recruiting tool for players who are on the D1/D3 fringes and for whom playing time matters.

As for rules applicable to D3 soccer, they are stopping the clock for certain substitutions to avoid subs that are designed to waste time.

QuoteIn all three levels of men's and women's soccer, the committee recommended that the clock will be stopped on all substitutions made by the team leading the game or if the score is tied in the last 15 minutes of the second half and in overtime periods.

Here are the other proposed changes.  I can't imagine enough cameras will be available for VAR in DIII games, but I guess it technically will be legally possible

QuoteExpanded video review

The panel approved expanding video review. If video review equipment is available, referees can initiate reviews on the following plays:

    Potential penalty kick situations.
Potential straight red card situations. (An ejection for two yellow cards is not reviewable.)
Any potential offside violation involving goal-scoring opportunities.
    Denial of obvious goal-scoring opportunities.

Other rules proposals

The sudden-victory (golden goal) overtime format will be used in postseason play.
Teams must provide copies of their rosters, with starters indicated, to the scorer's table, opposing coach and referee 15 minutes before kickoff. The copy given to the referee shall not have card information listed.

Point of emphasis

Officials will be instructed to watch decorum by coaches and players in the coaching and team areas next season. The committee considered proposing that all bench personnel, except for the head coach, remain seated during play.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no evidence that the "point of emphasis" was called the "Amherst Rule" in committee.

Just bring back golden goal for the regular season AND playoffs.

Thanks Kuiper, clearly less people are currently participating since we got back online.  I can't believe we have almost made it to May and not had some subtle or less-than-subtle, Amhate permeate the boards.

Speaking for me, the simple reason is that I could care less about Amherst. I like their coach, and I'm sure their players are nice kids, but I have zero respect for the program so it's not worth my time. YMMV

I was just baiting you.  I sometimes feel like I'm talking into the wind on the boards these days!

When you're in Region X and you've experienced the University of St. Thomas-Texas Lutheran game and other craziness, the Amhate over sideline behavior seems kind of quaint to be honest.

Well done Kuiper and you're right, there is a shortage of views of all hues being expressed.  Perhaps closer to the season things will start to pick up, when we are regaled with details of how good incoming classes are, how squads have been training the house down etc

I booked my flights this week for September/October and will get to visit two new venues in what is Enmore Kitten's final season, Bates and Colby.  Definitely can't wait!

Message boards are an artifact of the nineties/early aughts (and I say that as one of the most active/few SCAC/SAA participants).  People don't want to go to a dedicated site, they want to climb onto Tiktok/X/reddit/IG or some other social media rather than boards specific to a topic.  It's sad but just the way it is.  Hopefully we see more activity as the '24-25 season draws closer, but it won't be a huge amount.

Very true, and something we have discussed on this board in recent years.  Only thing that might make this board somewhat unique is that D3 sports are so ignored by both social media and mainstream media, and information is in sufficiently high demand by prospective students and their parents (who are of an age where boards are a comfortable medium for them), that there should be some interest in it if it was more widely publicized.  But, I'm not really complaining.  It's just nice that there are people willing to host these boards for those who do want to participate!

I am too depressed about Coach Singleton leaving W&L to participate much these days.

Exaggerating slightly but not entirely.

Could be wrong but the age of most folks (parents) interested in this stuff aren't climbing into Social Media as much - maybe Insta-Face.......I think it will pick up. It certainly lost some momentum when the site was down for months......

I saw from W&L Men's Soccer's Instagram that Coach Singleton was able to coach through Spring practice (or at least part of spring practice) before starting at Goucher.  That at least provided the boys with a little closure, although it might have been nice if they had a new coach in place (perhaps Jon Freeman, who has been named interim HC?) so he could get a head start on the coming year.

I hear you. Hopefully, W&L will be smart enough to make Jon HC. Not you average D3 asst coach. He's had HC experience and I'm guessing he worked very closely with Singleton. Another thing that is that his wife is a W&,L coach and most coaches aren't going to want to move their family to Lex Vegas. If W&L is smart they'll be fine.

Hmmm, seems a little hypocritical. Can't play OT anymore? So let's clamp down on substitutions. Let's play less players in a compact 18+ season in just over 2 months??

Maybe less time for underclassmen? Also harder to keep whole team engaged?

Do you think coaches will have to coach more or less?

Hey, look at that, you inspired my first post on these boards.  As a parent of a player who is progressing through his high school years toward the college game, I have learned a TREMENDOUS amount from of all of you who have already traveled this road with your kids and taken the time to share your experiences and earned wisdom.  Thank you, and please keep it up!
