This happened a few weeks ago, but since no one commented on it, I thought I would give it a little air time.

In the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships, #1 Alvernia beat #2 PSU-Behrend 2-1 in OT

This organization sponsors an NIT-like regional tournament for schools that missed out on the NCAA men's soccer tournament.  I wouldn't claim that it's even the "best of the rest," since a school has to want to participate and be a member (and membership is obviously concentrated in one part of the country).  Nevertheless, it's an accomplishment and the winners deserve to be celebrated.

I wish more regions had end-of-season tournaments like this.  The DIII college soccer season is short enough as it is and it's nice to enable teams to at least take advantage of the few extra weeks that are already permitted under the current system.

I actually watched the finals.  More soccer... good.

Don't Forget the ECAC Tournaments

I know the NCAA tournament hasn't even started yet, but there is another tournament out there - the Eastern College Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship, which announced its teams earlier this week and its games start this weekend.  It looks like seeding followed the NPI ranking system.

This isn't really a tournament of the "first out" schools like the NIT might be in basketball.  You have to pay to be a member as a school and then decide to participate in this competition.  It's possible neither happened in this case. I just like the option of playing another game or two that might mean something, especially given how short the college season is already.

If I remember correctly you have to apply before the ncaa tournament also since the field is announced just after. Our college would only pay for the trip if you had made your conference tournament finals that year. Nice to have games but still can be quite the expense.

Quarterfinal results

Rutgers-Newark 3 - FDU-Florham 2

If someone tells you that no one cares about the ECAC Tournament, point them to this game.  5 red cards (only one a double yellow) and 9 cards total.  Rutgers-Newark scores 2 while playing 10 v. 11 to take the 3-2 lead, then plays 8 v. 9 for the final 9 minutes to preserve the victory.  I'm going to guess that this was the New Jersey version of last season's St. Thomas - Texas Lutheran game.  If someone has an eye witness report, please offer it up.

Alvernia 4 - William Paterson 3 (OT)

Tons of lead changes.  Alvernia ties the game with 5 minutes left on a PK and then hits a golden goal to win it three minutes into the first OT.

McDaniel 2 - Hartford 0

McDaniel scores two goals in the first half for its first postseason victory of any kind since 2003.  Best of all, McDaniel played 22 players as the coach seemed to empty the bench to use this tournament as a springboard for next season.

In the semifinals tomorrow, Alvernia plays @ Rutgers-Newark and McDaniel plays at Juniata.

Semifinal Results

Rutgers-Newark 2 - Alvernia 1

Edgar Silva scores a brace with goals in the 22nd and 52nd minutes to lead Rutgers-Newark to the ECAC Finals.  Physical game by Rutgers-Newark though.  They committed 22 fouls (compared to 9 for Alvernia) and were shown three yellows/

Juniata 2 - McDaniel 1

Juniata scored in the 7th and 69th minutes and fairly well dominated this game, outshooting McDaniel 22 to 10 and getting 8 corners to 1 for McDaniel

Juniata takes on Rutgers-Newark in the finals next Saturday 11/23

Hopkins92

Absolutely the best year of soccer for the Juniata team in over a decade. (I don't know their history but looked them up to check after they won the Landmark regular season.)

Juniata beats Rutgers Camden 3-1 to win the championship.  Link to the replay:

Edit: Rutgers Newark was in the championship game not Camden.  Apologies, I am old.

Mr_November

Entertaining match. Juniata look sky-high on confidence, and rightfully so.

Those Rutgers Newark kits remind me of the old school Man United kits from 2005 -

I think you are right especially that the some colleges you have to pay for your own transportation, food, and lodging which is why they don't participate in it. It baffles my mind the amount of money that some of these colleges charge for tuition but can't put up a team that represents them in a positive way for a weekend. This happened at my school 30 years ago and it still going on today

We had played in it twice when I was coaching. I mean it was nice to be apart of and such to get some extra games. For us it was a disappointment to be playing in it. It meant we didn't make our major goal in getting to the ncaa tournament. Thankfully in my 8 years of coaching we only played in 2 of them and made 6 ncaa tournaments so it was much more good than bad.
You also have to remember it isn't always easy getting a bus and hotel on super short notice either for the amount of players on a team.
I do remember one ncaa tournament they couldn't even find us a bus the driver had to come from four hours away or something to even get us. In that instance ncaa ultimately reimbursed for the extra expense but ecac it's on the school/program.
