Hopkins gets screwed again...finishes 4th in the National poll but yet gets put in the same bracket as Messiah. I understand that the NCAA tries to use distance of travel as a guideline but what purpose does it serve to have the #1,2,4,5,and 8th ranked teams all on the same side of the bracket? If they get to the sectional it will be played at Messiah when Hopkins should be hosting a sectional. This is just plain wrong. You give it your all during the regular season to get the ranking and then it means nothing.

does anyone know the rotation this year regarding men's and women's team priorities in hosting sectionals.  if it's the men's turn to host a sectional in 2012 (even numbered year) that means that messiah's women would NOT be able to host -- instead the falcons would be on the road, and probably at hopkins.  can  anyone  shed light on how 2012 plays out regarding men's and women's hosting  sectionals?

JHUFAN

That happened in 2009. Messiah  Women's Soccer should have hosted the sectionals but were bumped by the Men's team having preference. I would think that 2011 would play out the same way. The NCAA does frown on having both Men's and Womens games played at the same location.

JHUFAN:  if messiah had to travel in 2009 for sectionals, then, yes, messiah's women would be on the road for sectionals this year -- the ncaa has not permitted a school to host four-team sectionals for both men and women for sectional host.  this, of course, is assuming that messiah's men win their single home game the  week before (highly likely).  so the road to the women's final four may  indeed pass  through baltimore.  if these two teams play in the elite eight, it will be an amazing show.  hope it happens.

Understood and hope to see that happen. My point is that JHU is/has been 4th in the National Poll. By virtue of that they should not be playing in the same bracket as Messiah and should meet them in the semi's or final match( obviously this is predicated on both teams advancing to this point. I realize that the NCAA has financial criteria they look at when setting up the brackets but it just does not seem right.

The national polls don't have any impact on the post-season selection. The committees use only the regional rankings. Look, a lot of us are just happy that Messiah isn't facing Hopkins in the first round! How about Trinity and Hardin-Simmons? That's just flat out maddening!

That's the old 'make the Texas teams play each early no matter what to save money' situation, Jim.  Happens all the times in all sports.  There have been years in football when you had two top-five teams, 1-2 in their region, playing in the FIRST round just so the AA could save money on a plane trip.   There are many times a team down here should host a regional, but since there are three other teams within 500 miles of each other, the ASC or SCAC school gets to hop on a plane regardless of their superior seeding.  Same thing happens to the SCIAC and NWC.

The AA is all about fairness until money gets involved, then it's do whatever's cheapest.  If they can be fair and cost-effective, they'll do it, but make no mistake the almighty dollar goes first.

And Hardin-Simmons has to face a team they just defeated in the ASC championship final in the first round.  Way to go, AA.

Since there's no place else for this, #3 Trinity (TX) got past #5 Hardin-Simmons 3-1 tonight.  They face Ithaca (12-4-3) in the regional round, location TBD.   Ithaca upset Ohio Northern, 1-0.

Both of HSU's losses in a 20-2 season were to Trinity, as were six of the eight goals they allowed all year.  Tough time for HSU to have to go out, just as it was when Trinity lost to them in the early rounds last year.

So when will we know where to go for the sectional games?

Fan, Hopkins looked good in the opening 20 minutes yesterday, but do you think Hop overlooked Amherst by focusing too much on their match-up against Messiah? What was your take on the game?

Jim Matson

I have to admit, I was surprised with the outcome.

Was at the game yesterday to watch live.  Amherst was tentative in the first half.  However, in the 2nd half, Amherst was aggressive and beat JHU to the ball and attacked.  In summary, Amherst had the better goal keeper as the JHU GK seemed out of position and had weak kicks.  Amherst was faster on the outside and quicker to the ball.  It was the game between two undefeated teams.  The winner was the better team on the field and came out of a stronger league....three teams in the field of 16 and now two teams in the quarter finals.

JHU was outplayed, outhustled and outcoached! As for Hopkins playing well for the first twenty mins or so that is a correct observation but with most Hopkins matches they begin to push the offensive third which takes pressure off the defense. Amherst was controlling possession and showed the weakness in the defense. Since Hopkins did not play a tough regular season they were able to play through the offensive side for almost all their games( not counting Swarthmore who gave them a real challenge or TCNJ whose game was played in miserable conditions).
