Was #19 Franklin at #1 Mt Union too obvious?  Shorter travel and it showcases two pre-season A-A QBs.  It's my first game of week 1, before going up the road for Marietta at my alma mater.  Perhaps it's because I live only 15 minutes from Otterbein and have never been to a game at Mt. Union

Well I suppose you could figure that Fisher at Otterbein would provide a more competitive game.

In all honesty, I think I thought that game was at Franklin this year. I should add a note, thanks. :)

I was planning on Otterbein, but that would have been a push to see the whole game and make tailgate in Cleveland.  Then I saw Franklin at Mt Union.

Kudos to Pat and whoever/whomever (whichever it is) else came up with the idea to do some road trips to get in as many games as possible during the year!  What an awesome idea. I think caravanning (not necessarily in Dodge Caravans) could be a hoot as well. Let's do this.

If one D-III game is good, two is better. I've taken in two games in a day on three different occasions. Adds a few miles on the car, but what a blast.

Sept 14 has a Mississippi DIII double-header. LaGrange @ Millsaps at 1 PM and Huntingdon @ Miss. College at 6 PM.

Just realized that due to my conflicting business schedule, I will be missing most of the games on opening weekend. I may catch some of the West coast games... :'(

Upper mid-west D3 road trips for the 2013 season

Pat got me to thinking about how to see the most number of games in the upper mid-west. So I took out the schedules for these conferences: CCIW, IIAC, MIAC, UMAC and WIAC and started plotting.  Because I live in the twin cities and follow the MIAC most closely it is definitely biased in that way. All times listed are Central.

Here's what I came up with:

Week one (weekend of September 7)
9/5   7:00 pm   Loras at Elmhurst (IIAC vs CCIW)
9/6   7:00 pm   St. John's at River Falls (MIAC vs WIAC)
9/7   1:00 pm   Northwestern at St. Olaf (UMAC vs MIAC)
9/7   7:00 pm    Macalester at Crown (Ind vs UMAC)

Week two (weekend of September 14)
9/12   7:10 pm   St. Thomas at River Falls (MIAC vs WIAC)
9/14   1:00 pm   Wartburg at Bethel (IIAC vs MIAC)
9/14   4:30 pm   Iowa Wesleyan at St. Scholastica (UMAC)

Week three (weekend of September 21)
9/21   1:00 pm    Gustavus at Augsburg (MIAC)
9/21   7:00 pm   Carleton at Hamline (MIAC)

Week four (weekend of September 28)
9/28   1:00 pm   Concordia at St. John's (MIAC)
9/28   4:30 pm   Westminster at St. Scholastica (UMAC)

Week five (weekend of October 5)
10/5   2:00 pm   Oshkosh at Stout (WIAC)

Week six (weekend of October 12)
10/12   1:00 pm   Eureka at Martin Luther (UMAC)
10/12   6:00 pm   Milikin at North Central (CCIW)

Week seven (weekend of October 19)
10/18   7:00 pm   Eau Claire at Whitewater (WIAC)
10/19   1:00 pm   Elmhurst at Wheaton (CCIW)
10/19   3:00 pm   Oshkosh at River Falls (WIAC)
10/19   6:00 pm   IL Wesleyan at Carthage (CCIW)

Week eight (weekend of October 26)
10/26   1:00 pm   Wartburg at Dubuque (IIAC)
10/26   6:00 pm   North Park at Augustana (CCIW)

Week nine (weekend of November 2)
11/2   1:10 pm   St. Thomas at Augsburg (MIAC)

Week ten (weekend of November 9)
11/9   12:00 pm    Luther at Coe (IIAC)

Week eleven (weekend of November 16)
11/16   1:00 pm   Bethel at St. John's (MIAC)

Now some explanations:

1. Week one has an additional game at the very beginning of the season, and it would be a haul to take it in, but it would be fun if one could afford the time off of work.

2. Weeks two and four have early evening/late afternoon games that are in Duluth which is a two and a half hour drive. There is no way to see all of both games that day. One has to decide which game they want to see the most of.

3. In week six you have to choose which of the two games to go to. The night game is at North Central, basically western suburbs of Chicago. The closest other game I could find in these 5 conferences was four and a half hours away. There might be an afternoon game that is closer in the Northwest corner of Indiana, but I did not look into it.

4. Week seven has you making choices as well. For the Saturday games one has to choose between choosing like in weeks two and four or seeing one mid-afternoon game.

5. Week eight again makes you miss some of one or both games, just like in earlier weeks.

Closing remarks: I hope others take this as a guideline to get in some other games outside the local teams they support, whether or not they follow it or get inspiration from it to do something like it. I hope to make some of these trips this year and will let you know what I experience.

Until then,
