The Maryville-Carson-Newman rivalry is an interesting example of the potentially good dynamics of a D3-D2 game.  Both schools are in the Knoxville, TN, area though neither is in Knoxville.  The schools recruit from the same high school base and a lot of the players know each other.  So when Maryville wins (again, I might add), it sometimes makes a splash in the Knoxville press, which only occasionally pays much attention to the schools' basketball (mostly when Maryville goes to the NCAA tournament)
