I myself wouldn't count Chowan if Pat isn't.

well, yeah,  BUT  - they (Chowan) are listed in this year's NCAA DIII Basketball manual - so I'm not sure why Pat choses not to recognize them  -  I also see LaSierra is not listed, but Pat recognizes them.   I just don't know Pat's thoughts on it.... Pat.. you out there???? :)

LaSierra is in year #1 of the 4 year provisional status.

The Provisional Ladder currently has:

Year #4: Spelman GA (GSAC-Women)

Year #3: Finlandia MI(Indep), Mount Mary WI (Indep), UTexas-Tyler (ASC-East), Green Mountain VT (Indep).

Year #2: UMinn-Morris from D2 and Crown MN in the Upper Midwest AC; Mount Aloysius PA in the AMCC; Keystone PA and PSU-Berks in the NEAC;  Tri-State IN in the MIAA; Maine-Presque Isle (Indep).

Year #1: Bethany Lutheran WI,  Northwestern WI, Presentation SD in UMAC; Mitchell (Pequots, a tribe of Native Americans) CT (Indep), North Central MN (Indep), SUNY-Purchase (NEAC), LaSierra CA (Indep),  Salem NC (Indep).

Slated to begin Provisional next year are:

Point Park PA, Seton Hill PA, UTexas-Permian Basin

In the Exploratory year in 2005-06:

Briarcliffe NY; UCincinatti Clermont; SUNY-Cobleskill; Doane, NE; Franciscan U, Steubenville OH;  Geneva PA; Lancaster Bible College PA;  Lincoln Christian MO (SLIAC-bound); Lyndon State College VT (which sets up the potential match up of Lyndon State vs Johnson State  :D ); SUNY-Morrisville; PSU-Harrisburg; St Vincent PA; Spaulding KY; St Joseph's VT: St Joseph's NY.

Ralph covers why we list La Sierra. Not sure why the NCAA book doesn't. Perhaps La Sierra has delayed its entrance.

We do not recognize Chowan because they are offering basketball scholarships. Seems cut and dried to me. The NCAA doesn't classify them as D-II until closer to the end of their transitional period, but we won't consider them D-III if they give athletic scholarships.

I googled "baines.edu" and got nothing.  :( ???

Coach C

Chowan is not playing by the spirit or the bylawas of D3 qand should not be considered a member, even if the NCAA, in its incomprehensible logic allows them to compete at the D3 level.  This from an organizaiton that suspends players at this level for accepting rides to the airport.  Go figure.

C

Mr. Ypsi

If Chowan now offers scholarships, they surely are not allowed in d3 tourneys, are they?  That would seem to be a MAJOR infraction, as in DEATH PENALTY in d1 sports!

Thuys, whatever they may be labeled, Pat is absolutely correct to omit them from d3.
