Greek Tragedy

So, officially, Nebraska Wesleyan is NAIA II? Some controversy over in the fantasy league page about their eligibility as a DIII member. On their website, one of their players won the Association of DIII independents award.

I'm not sure of the formality... but when I checked their schedule, they play only 4 D3 games, and a full conference slate of NAIA games, so I put them in as NAIA d2... I see they're not listed on D3hoops West region page either....

Nebraska Wesleyan is (and has been for a long time) a dual member of both the NAIA and NCAA.  Next year they will be joining the Iowa Conference in d3, so there should be less controversy, but they are a d3 member.

I don't see how there's any controversy as they play under the more restrictive rules of D3.

Agreed.  And they do have some very worthy D3 history.  In 1997, IWU beat Neb Wes in a close battle in the title game in Salem.  They have at least a few other deep runs in the D3 tourney.  Due to geography, they joined an NAIA conference, but they have never totally abandoned D3, and will return almost entirely next season.

Greek Tragedy

I understand all that. But do their results count as D3 in terms of the NCAA tourney process?

NebWes made the Final Four three times in a four-year period in the '80s, finishing third in the nation in '85, '86, and '88. North Park beat NebWes in one of the '85 semifinals, so I got to see one of those Plainsmen teams; NWU forward Dana Janssen, an All-American, was a phenomenal player. Here's a Sports Illustrated article about those Plainsmen teams.

Results against them count as d3 wins, as far as I know.  They often declare for the NAIA tourney, but I don't think that invalidates their status, it just prevents them from being included in Pool C.
