D3 vs. D1/D2/NAIA/NCCAA

Many D-2 and D-3 schools have played doubleheaders against them - both men's and women's. They need games before their tournament in March. I think a lot of time teams help with travel for them so they get a couple games out of it, too.

They play quite a few community colleges as well.

The category I always keep my eye on is the D3 vs. NAIA-D2 line. D3 usually comes out on the short end of the stick by season's end against NAIA-D2. Right now D3 is ahead, which is certainly good to see.

The category I always keep my eye on is the D3 vs. NAIA-D2 line. D3 usually comes out on the short end of the stick by season's end against NAIA-D2. Right now D3 is ahead, which is certainly good to see.

I don't think it was that way 10+ years ago, though.  I think perhaps the NAIA2 teams have been scheduling weaker D3 opponents recently - or the top D3 programs have found it less beneficial to take those games?

It's really all about the geographic luck of the draw more than anything else. The most common D3 vs. NAIA-D2 scenario tends to involve geographic outliers (southern teams; West Coast teams; Michigan, outstate Minnesota, and Maine teams; etc.) or crosstown neighbors (e.g., Adrian vs. Siena Heights or UW-LaCrosse vs. Viterbo). Just take a look at the D3 teams that played NAIA-D2 opponents this past week: Northland, Minnesota-Morris, UW-River Falls, Methodist, Pomona-Pitzer, Wartburg, Calvin, Hope, CMS, and Crown.

That, and late cancellations in which the D3 team needs an opponent on comparatively short notice (and, since NAIA teams are allowed to play 32 games, they're more likely to have open dates available), seem to be the biggest reasons why D3 teams play NAIA-D2s.
