Right, but picking on the NCCCA and USCAA isn't as fun. I really look for games against NAIA 1 and 2.

Without question the NAIA offers the most evenly matched competition for D3. NAIA 1 is a bit stronger than D3 and NAIA 2 is more or less equal.

I'm really interested to see how UW-Platteville is going to stack up against Point Loma Nazarene (NAIA 1) next week.  Looking at their roster and their results thus far, we should match up pretty well.  Our guards will be a little smaller than theirs, but our Frontline as a whole should be a little bigger.  Always good when you can get away for a trip and play good competition.

I have followed the GSAC for a long time. It's a real tough basketball conference. Anytime a D-III team can beat one of the top GSAC teams like Concordia, Point Loma, or Cal Baptist it's a big win. The Sea Lions are formidable. Good luck to Platteville.

The GSAC has three teams in the latest NAIA 1 Top 25 Poll (12/12):

Concordia #3
Point Loma Nazarene #10
Cal Baptist #15

Plus Azusa Pacific, Vanguard and The Master's also received votes.

As I said, good luck to Platteville.

Just wish I could be in Sunny Southern California to watch the battle...instead I'm stuck here in a foot of snow, with another 6 inches coming tomorrow.

Happy Holidays to all and travel safely

On Nov. 17, NAIA DI Olivet Nazarene lost in OT at Point Loma Nazarene...

I'm pretty familiar with ONU as Illinois Wesleyan has played them every year for the last 15 seasons, including this year when the Tigers pasted rebuilding IWU (picked 7th in the CCIW) 97-79.  Olivet Nazarene would be in the mix to win the CCIW this year.  They'd probably finish 2nd, but they'd be in the middle of the title race.  A 2nd place CCIW team is about equal to a 2nd place WIAC team, I'd say.

So if Point Loma Nazarene and ONU are about even, I'm thinking Point Loma is about equal to a WIAC #2 team - maybe like UW-Whitewater.  It's a game Platteville can win, but on the road they'll certainly be an underdog. (It wouldn't surprise me if Point Loma is as good or better than UW-Stevens Point.)

Sounds like it could be a game anyway.  I'm just wondering how the Pioneers will react to the small layoff, travel, and the scenery.  Hopefully they can be focused enough to compete and make it a game.  They play George Fox while they're out there too, even though they're D3.

Not like it's "The Banana Slugs are formidable" :)

I think the top two teams in the GSAC, as a general rule, should be considered basically unbeatable by D-III standards, at least in their time zone. Basing that on Calvin's trip to Azusa Pacific and Biola the year they won the national title. Those were the only two losses Calvin had all season.

Cal. Baptist handed last year's Final Four bound Wooster team one of its three regular season losses, too. Just another example of the strength of GSAC teams against top D-III competition.

Without question, the GSAC is a great league.  I've been to Westmont College's Tom Byron Classic twice now with IWU, and even middle-of-the-pack Westmont teams are hard to deal with.

Too bad you're already going to be busy that night watching IWU get beat by Oxy.
