Second Wind

No idea why no Benes last night. It's been a rough two weeks at CUC, hoping Benes will be back when Cougars play at Marian on Saturday.

Second Wind

CUC 68 at Marian 61, Cougars now 8-6, 7-2 NACC.

After a one game absence, the Kate Benes show was on full display today, and the Cougars needed it! Benes scored 38 after a slow start and rescued the Cougars on a day when neither team shot particularly well. The scoring drops down to Melia Perry with 11 and Mikalah Ellis with 10, although Ellis hit a big three with 20 seconds left that effectively sealed the deal.

A big win for CUC with their next two games at Aurora and at home versus WLC.

1/18/23 Finals:

Lakeland 68, MSOE 60 (Muskies hit 9 3-pointers on the night)
WLC 88, Marian 42 (36 pts off 25 Marian turnovers, 48 pts in paint)
St. Norbert 81, CUW 36 (Green Knights-38 pts off 23 Falcon turnovers, Green Knights outshot CUW 53 to
                                                            23% from floor)
Aurora 76, CUC 66 (Benes didn't play, every time Cougars threatened, Spartans answered.)
Edgewood 58, Dominican 41 (Eagles had 64-42 edge rebounding)
Benedictine 51, Rockford 47 (Late Regent rally falls short, Terhune missed a potential game-tying shot, then
Eagles' Lake hit 2 FT's to seal this one)
IIT 83, Alverno 51 (Scarlet Hawks got off to a fast start and were never headed--Bucci 25 pts)

With those results, WLC leapfrogs both Concordia squads and gets into 3rd place for the time being. St. Norbert and Aurora get more distance - (teams are finding out they have to be darn good at taking care of the ball on offense against the Green Knights,--give 'em too many turnovers and they'll take miles)

CUC 52, Benedictine 50 (IL Eagles couldn't get a shot off in their last possession)

The Cougars were without Kate Benes and Mikalah Ellis tonight, while Melia Perry and Jaylene Wade combined for just 15 points on 6-23 shooting. And yet, the Cougars found a way to get it done. McKayley Hopkins led the way with 14 points, five boards and three steals in 39 minutes. Her speed and aggressive drives to the basket were just what the team needed. Alisyn McGregor (12 points, 13  boards) had some key fourth quarter buckets, and Sydney Lloyd sparked the team off the bench with eight points including a buzzer-beating halfcourt shot after entering the game with :03 left in the first quarter (part of a 9-0 run).

NACC Playoff Scenarios:

Easiest:  One more win by Edgewood and one by Lakeland and all spots then would be filled.
Toughest:  Edgewood and Lakeland both lose out and CUC win out (3 teams with 11-7 records, it would come down to tiebreakers for the last 2 spots.
