Maryville knocks off Ferrum in Murvul and NC Wesleyan nips CNU.

Wish I could have seen both, but I'll have to try and find the video replay online later tonight.

Here's the story from The Daily Times on Ferrum at Maryville game.

CNU just announced that C. J. Woollum died today.

USA South has three teams high up in the first South Region rankings and no one seems to care.  Is women's basketball too interesting for this conference?  Even the not great Great South conference board in women's basketball was alive.

Ferrum, CNU, and Maryville are all amazing teams.  I think any of those teams could make a run in the NCAA tournament.  If there are three better teams in another conference I would like to see them.

CNU (29-2) upsets Montclair St (29-1) 83-70!!
First team to reach the Elite 8.  Congratulations Captains!

CNU held Montclair St to 38% shooting (0-10 on 3 point attempts).

Tia Perry with 24 pts
Kelly Halverson 17 pts
Brandi Holland 15 pts (13 in the 2nd half)
Nicole Mitchell 14 pts,  7 rebounds
Camry Green 11 pts, 8 rebounds

Great win by the Ladies in Silver and Royal Blue tonight. Downing undefeated Montclair St. was no easy task. But boy the 50-point second half against the nation's stingiest defense was awesome to see. Looks like a date with host and top-ranked DePauw looms on the horizon.

Interesting that CNU now gets DePaul at DePaul where DePaul beat Maryville by about the amount DePaul just beat Wash U.  CNU should be able to do a better job on the boards than Maryville did and that could help a lot.  Good luck to the Captains and the USASouth!

CNU did about as well with DePauw as Maryville did.  The USASouth had three pretty good teams but is not nationally competitive yet.  It does seem stronger in women's basketball than the ODAC, which is clearly stronger in men's bb than the USASouth.  It has taken the ODAC a long time in men's to get as strong as it is, so there is always the possibility....

Maybe next year there will be a little interest on D3Hoops in USASouth women's basketball?

Pat Coleman

We definitely took notice. It was an interesting season! I know during the regular season we had Ferrum on the front a couple times and Christopher Newport at least once. Not sure if we had Maryville, too.

My bad, Pat.  I was referring to posters, not D3Hoops, which I thought did well by the conference.

Pat Coleman

Ahh. :) I hope so, too. Man, it's tough to get posters in some places. If men's posters don't cross over, then sometimes it is hard to sustain a conversation.

All you can do is keep posting and hope people swing by. I've been one of the few regular posters on the E8 women's board for a couple of years now (there were only two of us this year). If you're passionate about it, just do your thing. If people don't come by, that's okay too. At least you can provide a little more information for the lurkers

scottiedoug

Yep.  I'll probably keep at it.  There was more activity on the GSAC board, which was hardly as interesting a conference for women's hoops as the USASouth.

I do not have an informed opinion about the Women's BB Coaches Association awards but even so think congratulations are in order for Coach Travillian of Maryville for being selected as region 5 coach of the year in D3.
