Hard for me to believe ... apart from Wheaton (IL) College, of course, where every night is Steak Night.  :D

lol... it's not quite like that, but yeah, our food is really good... my sis used to get really excited about going to our dining hall when she visited :D :D :D

one year, when the ratings came out, and we were picked as #2 in the nation, we had a fancy meal (lobster, prime rib and shrimp type stuff) a fancy cheese and olive display, and the best... a big ice sculpture of a #2...  :D

good stuff

Part of the annual tradition of NPU students and recent alums traveling to the away basketball game at Wheaton was eating in the Wheaton dining hall. (I don't know if they've continued this aspect of the tradition in recent years.) It was never fully explained why Parkers did that, but I suspect that it was partly to see how the other half lived, partly to get the ol' animosity towards the Wheaties all revved up before game time, and partly to see how many Wheatie coeds they could gross out by behaving badly while wearing North Park gear.

Every time that we made that trek in the '80s, the Wheaton dining hall was serving steak. According to some of my younger colleagues, this trend held true in the early '90s as well. Didn't matter what night the game was played, whether it be a Tuesday, a Wednesday, or a Saturday ... Wheaton always served steak. And a nice, big chunk of it with every serving, too -- and a very good cut. When I was a North Park student, we'd get steak once every other week, and it was certainly not the kind of steak you'd write home about.

Of course, this played right into the common perception around the Park that Wheaton has money coming out of its ears. I remember mentioning to a Wheatie friend of mine that every time I was over on his campus for dinner before the North Park/Wheaton basketball game, the Wheaton dining hall was serving steak. He replied in deadpan fashion, "Too bad you never showed up on Lobster Night."

It's funny, cause while I always thought our food was fairly decent for cafeteria food, many Wheaton students complain about it alll the time... I think it's because they come from families where the moms made everything from scratch.  ::)

There's a really fine line between the importance of eating healthy, good foods, and being a snob about it... fortunately, I love my school, and most of the people were like the former rather than the latter.  :D

[With apologies to the late Lloyd Bentsen, especially since he was a Texan]:

I know lobster; I have served lobster for many years; lobster is a friend of mine.  Senator [oops, April], you're no lobster.

Sorry, but as an ancestral Down Easter, I just had to do it. ;D

IMO, king crab is far superior to snow crab, but snow crab is still excellent fare.  As for scallops: bay or sea?  (I love 'em both, but for different recipes).

This could be seriously misconstrued... It's all the more funny considering it was DHF who posted it...Sorry.

Your apologies to Lloyd Bentsen notwithstanding, you now need to trek to Texas (in particular, the best part of Texas, the San Antonio/Austin axis, including Luling and Seguin), and sample some of the best Tex-Mex food and real barbecue in the universe. (And don't forget the chicken-fried steak and white gravy!)

Forget the scallops, forget the snow crabs, forget the king crabs -- eat real food for a change.  :P

Texans don't know any more about real barbecue than they do about democracy.  Real barbecue uses pork shoulder only; Texans will barbecue anything that moves, even "shrimp type stuff."  If you want the best barbecue in the universe, forget about Texas and head to Interstate Barbecue on South Third St. near I-55 in Memphis!  ;D

Why are my keys all sticky?  ???

Ralph Turner

Now Warren, let's not confuse him with the differences between San Antonio/Austin Tex-Mex (like the fast food Taco Cabana) vs. Houston-Gulf Coast Tex Mex (Shrimp fajitas!  Fajitas Camarones at Pappasito's) vs. Dallas FtWorth Tex-Mex (El Fenix or Joe T Garcia's or Mi Cocnia) vs west Texas Tex-Mex (fast food places like Taco Bueno or the mom-and-pop's) vs those restaurants that serve traditional Mexican like Zuzu's which has plenty of chicken, goat and fish dishes.

David, Like Alabamans think barbecue is pork and Texans think BBQ is beef!

It is the Aussies who do the "Shrimp on the Barbee" thing!

...and Californians think BBQ is the brick thing in the backyard!  ::)

Mr. Ypsi

Having been in Texas once in my life (January, 1970; we've got one small Mexican restaurant in Ypsi that SEEMS very authentic based on the family that runs it, but...), and never (yet) having been to Memphis (I enjoy the Memphis Smokehouse Blues restaurant in Ypsi, but have no idea how authentic it is), I think I'd better leave this debate to the experts!

But NOBODY gets away with dissing lobster!

For places not within 50 miles of the coast (where I take it on faith that the lobster is local), I have about a 75% record (for those places who even knew) of stating where the lobster was caught (+/- 50 miles), and how long ago.  I am IN to lobster! ;D

So, does this constitute a 'food fight'? ;)

Well if you're gonna have a food fight, you're gonna need these (a bit of an inside MIAA joke):

No, it's not. :D There's just no comparison for fresh snow crab, caught, and then bought on the west coast. And I like both too, though usually sea more.
