Mr. Ypsi

#9,000 goes here.  That's all I got. :P

(I'll start prepping now for a doozy of a 10,000th.  Is sac available as a ghost-writer? :D)

On the basketball attendance issue. Calvin has only played 4 home games this year. 2 in a high school gym and 2 in the new VanNoord Arena. Average attendance through those 4 games is 2,217. They'll certainly get 4500 for Hope and Homecoming (as I recall on the MIAA board from a week back or so the actual official capacity sans standing room at VanNoord is closer to 4,500 than 5,000). They may beat Hope in attendance this year but it'll be close.

Calvin will also get a nice crowd for their "homecoming" game, whenever that is.

Why do I get the feeling that there's a truckload of innuendo behind the quotation marks in that sentence? ;)

Dare I say "football"? :D

Mostly its because I can't remember if they call it "homecoming" or something else............alright maybe a little jab at not having a football team but that wasn't the main point.

The Game, Pt. I, is this coming Saturday. Is there really such a thing as a "little jab" this week? ;) :D

In case you didn't realize it, the NESCAC people are throwing down the gauntlet in their room about the relative heat engendered by their big rivalry as opposed to yours. (One of them even had the temerity to compare your rivalry to Albion vs. Kalamazoo.) I figure that for the good of your league and the pride of the great state of Michigan, you folks need to start a knock-down, drag-out Hope vs. Calvin screaming match in Let's Talk MIAA, complete with accusations of karma dings and pictures of dead horses.

I'm just trying to help you get the ball rolling. ;)

ahhh  seems pretty harmless.   Funny thing is Kzoo/Albion is actually a pretty good rivalry, they just don't have the fans or the constant battles for the leagues trophy to go with them.

Is Amherst/Williams religious based?............if not,  it can't be as intense ;) :D

You know the old saying, ........an atheist is someone who watches a Hope/Calvin game and doesn't care who wins.

I watched the last 10 min of Amherst/Williams on the webcast.  A couple things stuck out with regards to 'intensity' and things of that nature.  I realise video often does a game's intensity injustice and I've said as much about Hope/Calvin games that are always televised.

1)   it was great to see a packed gym, thats a rarity in most of D3

2)....but I was struck with how quiet or not-intense the crowd seemed to be, and was quite flabergasted at the lack of reaction to the horrible officiating at the end that may have cost Williams the game.  If the same had happened in Holland or Grand Rapids, there would have been,  uh, issues..........It was really hard for me to even take note of where the student section was.  Maybe its because we are more colorfull......

3)   any game that would have ended as this one did between Amherst/Williams would have resulted in a court being rushed by the winning teams fans.  I didn't see that.

On Saturday Hope/Calvin will meet for the 170th time, there will be about 3,000 Hope fans and 500 Calvin fans in attendence but several thousand more watching from around the country on satelite.

.......this year there's an added bonus, the game can be viewed on DirecTV (Channel 367) nationwide.

They're New England schools of ancient lineage, and are therefore pagan by definition. ;)

Your points re: Williams/Amherst vs. Hope/Calvin are excellent, and I may use them if I get ambitious enough to go into the NESCAC room and stir up trouble. ;)

Let them put 11,000 plus in an arena, and then we'll talk. Otherwise it's a proposition so laughable it hardly needs to be responded to. And you can tell those NESCAC folks I said that!

I was at a satellite party in DC last January. The place was packed with Hope and Calvin fans who were whooping it up the whole time. I doubt you'll see anything like that for a Williams/Amherst "game."

I'm glad for the Saturday games, because if Hope happens to lose on a weeknight (or lose to a wee-knight) I can barely get myself to teach the next day.

That's why you teach in college. Just take the day off. Call it a "research" day.

I should've figured it was in here, instead.   ;)  Sorta kinda #500 for me, too.

Here's a rarity on this board, an actual post about attendance.

These are usually the four at the top of D3 attendance, here's how they finished this year.  I added Wheaton because they led the CCIW this year, still playing but even full houses in two potential home games only gets them a little over 1500

Hope 2696
Calvin 2553
Wooster 1689
Wheaton 1445
Illinois Weslyan 1248

I'm not aware of others, feel free to post them if they're in that range.  By the way that Hope number is about 300 less than last year.
