Mr. Ypsi

April,

As far as I can gather, HoF has little to do with either posts or time.  My super-secret, inside-info (of which, of course, I have none) says you are a prime candidate for induction in 2008.  I have learned that I am a back-up, fifth from the bottom, perhaps if all the planets align, HoF choice in 2157 - my great-great-great-great gandchildren will be so proud!

I can't remember the exact date, but I first discovered this site in the fall of 1998. A fellow North Park alumnus had found it on a search engine after entering the words "Division III basketball", and immediately e-mailed me to tell me, "This site is right up your alley." I logged in immediately upon entering the site for the first time. With my first post I launched CCIW Chat, which I originally created as a new thread entitled, "Has the CCIW declined in quality in the '90s?" There weren't league rooms per se back then, just discussion threads branching off of the Posting Up tree.

I think Bob Quillman entered the thread a few days later; I remember that his first few posts concerned how the excitement of the upcoming season would remove the disappointment he'd felt after watching defending national champion Illinois Wesleyan fall to defeat to Gustavus Adolphus in the previous spring's tournament. Dave Lawrenz (Wheaton C) and Rodney Buikema ('73 Chevy Impala) were two of the early posters in the thread as well, and I think that Augiefan might've been one of the early ones, too. Lanny Lobdell (Veteran CCIW Fan) is another poster who has been on CCIW Chat almost from the very beginning, and Jim Matson (Hiker Jim) goes back to the last decade, too. We should all get gold watches at the tenth anniversary party a couple of years from now.

The only other early poster I remember from what Pat would later rename CCIW Chat was a guy who called himself Beer Nut Denny. He was a rather obnoxious Bosko groupie who had turned on NPU and become a big Carthage fan and was constantly taking me to task for not following his lead and shifting my loyalty as well. It was unsettling having to deal with him, because he knew me by sight but I didn't know him. He vanished from Posting Up somewhere during or after the 1998-99 season. However, I did eventually spot the guy. I sat with Bosko at the Carthage @ NPU football game that next fall; I think he was there just to make sure that his star recruit Rob Garnes didn't break anything while playing wide reciever for the Redmen. There was a crazed middle-aged man in a red Beer Nuts windbreaker who was screaming his lungs out in the Carthage section whom Bosko identified as "Denny".

I sure don't miss that guy.

Somebody should start working on a book.  We could have it out by the 10 year anniversary.  Quite a bit of d3hoops.com history floating around here.

It's funny you mention that Hoops Fan.... back when I was travelling all the time, several people mentioned that they thought I should write a book about all the schools I've been to, games I've seen, and people I've met.... I think the first person who suggested it was Keelan Amelianovich's mom way back in his sophomore season. It's been an idea in the back of my mind ever since, but my biggest hesitancy has always been that I haven't been around for enough of the history, and I haven't seen enough of those great historic games in the early days.

I would totally be up for just being the editor and graphics person for a collection of memoirs over the next few years though. I have enough graphics experience that I could probably make it look pretty nice, and a time frame of "a few years" gives me tons of time to work with.  It could be a revival and expansion of my old job as the secretary/minutes taker of the CCIW chat. :D

Assuming that someone probably wouldn't want to publish it professionally, :D at the very least I  could PDF it and have pat post it on the site for people to download and/or handbind some copies using my crafty skills and send it to the really cool people. :)

I don't know, If anyone is serious about this idea, maybe we could make a poll/board to discuss how many people would actually contribute/read such a thing?

Is that seriously a Kelly Clarkson quote on your post?  You do know that it is going to show up on the CCIW Chat too, don't you?

No kidding... I'm supposed to care why? I have a very odd range of music tastes... case in point, compare and contrast her with the concert I almost went to this weekend of this band: www.project86.com. I find her music interestingly entertaining.  :P At least I never watch American Idol or any other reality tv show.  ::)

I honestly have no problems with Kelly Clarkson, I was trying to take a shot at the CCIW Chat honestly.  I guess reality show pop stars seemed a bit too pedestrian for the mighty elite of the CCIW.  I guess this was one joke that bombed out.

No problem. :) I'm sure I'll change it pretty soon anyway, whenever something I read or hear becomes more entertaining.

Just an FYI, if I don't laugh at a joke, it's totally not funny. I laugh at everything. Sorry.  :-\ :D

Apparently Gordon Mann is genuinely very disappointed in my quote though.  :D

Okay, 9000!  The good thing about these last thousand posts is that they have been mostly on baseball and track.  (Go McMurry Men, Tied for 4th at Nationals!  And all points scorers are coming back from this freshman and sophomore crew! ;))

Pat, thanks for the extra message boards!  I am looking forward to the new edition of Kickoff!

And for what may be one last time...  :(  :'(  :-\

Heh, I may have to change this board's name to the Milestones board or something. :)

Then people would find it.  The whole point was to put these posts in an out of the way place... well I guess that's dead too.  Just give us our fantasies.

It is the posting milestones board the way it is... it's tracking best attendance of two types: attendance at actual games of all fans, attendance of fans on d3hoops.com. :P Ralph is obviously the primary contender for "best attendance on d3hoops.com" award. ;)

Blame it on Greg. He did it first.  :D Then I did it, and then it just sorta made sense given the name.

You gotta leave the name. It would be like changing the MIAA board to "MIAA Chat" and the CCIW board to "Let's talk CCIW"... maybe I just don't like change... Hahaha...  :)
