Clint Eastwood is just finishing up shooting on a movie of "Flags of Our Father" (and no he's not acting in this one).  I have a friend on the crew; it should be a good one, then again pretty much every movie Clint does is a good one.

Quote from: knightstalker on July 10, 2006, 09:30:45 AMI just finished a really good book about Iwo Jima, it is called Flags of our Fathers.  It is about the six men, five Marines and one Navy corpsman who were in the famous picture.  It really explains a lot about how a lot of these men feel.  I highly recommend it.

One of my brothers brought Flags Of Our Fathers along to read during our family vacation last week.

Whenever I think about the six men who raised the flag on Iwo Jima's Mount Suribachi, the Johnny Cash song "The Ballad Of Ira Hayes" runs through my head.

Hmm... it's about a month late, but I guess I'll get to OS's question.  Sorry, I went and graduated, got a new job, moved, and got married.  I haven't been busy or anything!  But, to answer OS's question, yes, UWSP's books are "free"... in a matter of speaking.  They're free in that students pay a flat fee in the tuition for the majority of books that are then treated like a rental, and if you don't return them, then you are billed the amt.  It's rather covenient.  You don't have to have the money up front when you get the books, and then you don't get ripped off when they buy it back at 25% of the original price.  While at Michigan Tech my first year of college, we had to buy our books.  I managed to get a few bucks back for them, but they wouldn't take one of my books (they were using a different edition the next year).  Then, when I transferred, I really had no use for it.  I mean, I took Chemistry once, I really don't care to ever re-live that experience!  Even if I had taken chem though, UWSP used a different book... oh well!

On a side note... all the engineering majors (which I was at the time) had to take this same Chemistry class... and the first test was a notoriously hard one, so on the way to the test that evening, upper classmen blasted "Another One Bites the Dust" out of their windows as the freshmen walked to the test... I just laughed it off and did fine... but I could see that it really shook some of the kids up!

Back to the rentals, though... I don't have any of my text books from college.  I could have purchased them, but it really wasn't worth it to me.   I haven't needed them with my current job, but a few of them might have been an interesting read some time if I was REALLY bored...

Kinda like April said, there were a few classes that had either readers (written by the prof or one of his/her grad students), selected readings used with permission, or selected readings on the online reserve which was accessable through the school's library page.  Lots of teachers were going towards the last choice, because it meant less paper, which meant less cost, but I ended up printing many of them off anyway (ahem... and reading them during the first 5 mins of class, oops!), so it didn't help me much, especially when my printer was out of ink, or I was out of paper, or time...

One certain prof did this, a philosophy prof.  I didn't manage to quite do all the readings for each of the 3 classes I took of his, but I still have the readers and will some time go back.  I wonder if I'll get credit for it if I turn a paper in outlining what I wrote...   :D

I for one will not stand for the kind of slacking that apparently everyone else here is prepared to excuse.  Back in my day we'd do that all in an afternoon and still work the graveyard shift at the chemical factory.

Congrats.

If you run out of "Best of" categories I'd like to suggest Best D3 posters---not as individuals but as a group representing a team or conference and not by quantity but quality.

Mr. Ypsi

I hope it is legal to talk about attendance on this board! ;)

After a scandal about deliberately inflated attendance reports at Eastern Michigan fball games, their average attendance plummetted from 16,000+ to a d1A worst 5,219 (and they are in danger of being 'given a Pluto' if they can't average 15,000 - and I doubt they can without cheating).

I was curious how this would stand them in d3.  I was surprised that they would have still finished 2nd (though over 2700 behind St. Johns) - I would have thought that at least 8-10 d3s would have beaten them.  (Still, a conference average of over 3000 in the MIAC sure looks more impressive than 5000 at a 'supposed' d1A school!)
