I just saw in the best dunk thread a video that showed the hope gym, and frankly im extremely impressed, it is reminiscent of atleast the lower levels of the dean smith center at UNC or the cameron indoor at Duke, all four sides perminent seating 3500ish, pretty impressive. I have seen many a div 1 facility that seat less.

Just wondering how/why hope built a facility of that size when a number of bigger universities do not have facilities of that caliber

why?  Hope has led D3 in attendance for several years now, routinely averaged 2500+ in their old building, now average 2900+ in our second year in our cozy home.

how?  Amway money goes a long way.  Richard and Helen DeVos donated half of the original cost if Hope raised the rest, which they did.   Total cost 22 Million.

By the way one end is actually roll out bleachers that are turned around and used for the adjacent volleyball gym.

EDIT:  www.hope.edu has some nice pictures and info about DeVos Fieldhouse if your interested in learning more.  Unfortunately as of 11:30 the Hope website is down. :-\

Mr. Ypsi

ILive4This,

If you had scrolled up just a little (same page!), you'd see that Hope has 'always' been a leader in d3 attendance - and 'the Dick' assures it for the foreseeable future!

Now, returning to the real function of this board - congratulations to sac!

Rookie! :P

Isn't there a minimum seating capacity for d1 basketball?  I would think it would have to be over 3,000.

Nope. And no attendance requirement. Last year, NJIT averaged 120 fans per game. Colgate had 522 fans per game, and Nicholls State averaged less than 500. St. Francis in NY had 341 fans per game.

I guess I should have said capacity requirement.  I thought there was a capacity requirement for d1.

Nope. You're thinking football.

Carter Gym - home of the Campbell Camels - has a capacity of 947. They average 883 per game - so it's pretty full, but still...

Charleston Southern's capacity is under 800 at their fieldhouse on campus.

That's interesting.  I was just reading an article about some school that the AD implied that they couldn't go d2 until they improved their seating capacity.  Maybe he meant that they needed to increase capacity to be able to afford to go d2.  I don't know.

Yeah, that may be about filling the seats. Schools like Campbell and Charleston Southern don't fly unless it's a paid date as a tomato can opponent, and they probabyl get more private alumni support than a lot of public schools.

Or, in Campbell's case, as a tomato-soup can opponent.

I think?  ??? :D

As the first poster on this board with 1000 (at least from what is still there, Greg was definitely first), that's three years, and 3 days... and 4000 posts.

(So basically, I don't know whether to be happy or ashamed.) :D

Hey, I'm back from my business trip? Does that count for something?

And somehow, I lost 5 karma points by shutting up. Hmmm....
