Few outside of Los Angeles (and few from Los Angeles) are familiar with tiny Div III Occidental College, though it produced some memorable NFL players and coaches such as retired coach Jim Mora ("Playoffs?!) and qb/ex-Senator Jack Kemp, not to mention succesful Hollywood types. The school also may have produced a future US President: Barack Obama attended the school from 1978-1980 and was the school's leading scorer in basketball in 1979.

For what it's worth, I believe that "fact" about him being the leading scorer may not be all that accurate.

The line between fact and fancy, when it comes to politicians running for high office, is thin indeed.

Thanks, David. In all the Obama coverage, I never recall hearing of his Oxy connection.  (And I'm leaning towards Obama - damned eastern bias in the media! )  Any other candidates with d3 ties?

The campus received some extra national attention recently in news articles noting that Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama attended Occidental for two years before he transferred to Columbia University in 1981, although Obama has disappointed the Los Angeles school by not visiting it during his current campaign.

In the light of the New York Times endorsing John McCain for president, while sitting on a story since December 2007 and then publishing it on February 21, 2008, of his impropriety with a lobbyist occurring eight years ago, I thought it was quite reflective.
