There are plenty of schools that are like that. Carthage SID Steve Marovich can pinpoint the crowd numbers at a Carthage home game with great accuracy. But it's all a matter of: a) being familiar with a gym's true capacity (which means being familiar with how much each section can actually hold when full, and being able to gauge how full each section is on a given night) and b) taking the matter seriously.

At Millikin, neither of those criteria are met. At NPU, neither was met under the previous couple of SIDs. Now attendance is taken seriously at North Park home games, but the various students who run Stat Crew don't really have any grasp of how many people the crackerbox can actually hold. Some of the estimates are ridiculous; NPU's game program for the past couple of years has listed capacity at 1,800, and I've seen attendance figures of 1,500 attached to the box scores of North Park home games. The truth of the matter is that the North Park gym can barely hold 1,100 in its current seating configuration, even when everyone is sitting cheek-to-jowl.

Veteran Vikings fans such as Dennis Prikkel, Mr. B, and I can eyeball the crowd at a home game and come up with very accurate estimates. But nobody ever asks us.

I don't see how it can be that difficult to count attendance, all you need is an inexpensive free standing turnstyle that you make everyone go through to enter the game.  Most turnstyles have a counter installed on them.

Wouldn't work at some places that have multiple points of entry. And if there's no charge for the game, how important is a turnstyle count?

I like Hope's method of counting.  They have students at every entrance (you typically need them there anyway) with the push button hand-held counters.  Of course they also have another method -  just sell-out the games and know what your capacity is.   ;D

Sure - there's definitely standing room...

- standing in line waiting to get tickets
- standing in line waiting to get in
- standing in line waiting for the bathroom
- standing in line for a hot dog
- (and worst of all) standing in line for the condiments

Thought I would post a little bit of information that I found out when calling the Calving ticket office about the Hope allotment for the Hope/Calvin game at the new Calvin Field house. I was told that capacity will be 4500 not 5000. So Hope's 17% of seats will be based on 4500 not 5000 as originally stated.

I find it all very curious. :o

Freudian slip or intentional...    ???

Do Calvin fans "have a cow" when you refer to the "Calving ticket office"?   ;D

Just catching up after a lengthy trip out west.  Ralph, all Wolverines know that Michigan State is Moo U - not sure that Calvin has to worry! ;)

Despite the summer doldrums and vacation, I've ALMOST returned to my earlier announced milestone - I notice that OS and FDF are still floundering! :D
