In the last three weeks, we have had some separation in Pool B (Women).

Chapman is on course to lock in a Pool B bid early.  They are 11-4 overall and 9-4 in-region.  In fact, Chapman is the only Independent that has an overall record over .500 (at this minute).  The Lady Panthers have 6 more in-region games.  If they go 5-1 in that stretch, they will have an in-region record of 14-5 (.737),  but probably lock in the Pool B bid with their season finale vs. UDallas on February 18th.

Among the other independents, I thought that UDallas (6-7 overall/4-6 in-region) had the best chance at a Pool B bid, but they have not won some crucial games in the first half of the season.  The Lady Crusaders have 11 in-region games remaining, of which the most important may be the final game at Chapman.  A 15-6 (.714) in-region record might pull a Pool B bid, if there is no separation in the Northern Athletics Confernece,

Thomas More has the best record in the Presidents' AC, which probably moves to Pool A next year.  The Saints are 10-2 overall, 7-2 in-region and 1-0 in conference play, and were the favorite tabbed in the pre-season poll.  Even going 9-2 in the last 11 in-region regular season games gives TMC an in-region record of 16-4 (.800).

Traditional power W&J was named 2nd.  They are 7-6/4-6/0-1 and must improve their in-region record in conference play.  Sweeping the remaining 11 PresAC in-region games will give Lady Presidents a 15-6 (.714) record.

The Lake Michigan Conference and the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference have merged into the Northern Athletics Conference.  That throws them into Pool B for the next 2 years.  There are six teams that are at the top at this time.

Benedictine is 8-3/7-3/5-1 and leads the NAthCon.  The Lady Eagles have a key win at Concordia-Wisconsin.

Concordia-Wisconsin is 7-3/5-2/5-1, and was picked to win the NAthCon.

Other NAthCon teams in contention for a Pool B bid at this early part of the season are Wisconsin Lutheran, Aurora, Lakeland and Edgewood.  It is my guess that the key to the distribution of Pool B bids depends on how much separation the top teams in the NAthCon achieve from the rest of the conference.  Attaining a 16-3 conference record may pull any of the NAthCon teams into serious Pool B contention.  I mention 16-3 in conference record, because each NAthCon contender has several in-region losses.  Anything less in-conference is risky for getting a Pool B bid.

I have "bold-fonted" the four that seem to be leading Pool B at this time.

(The Great South Athletic Conference has earned a Pool A bid.)

Corrections and other opinions are greatly appreciated.

I know it's early yet, but IMHO Concordia-WI will darn near have to win out:

Concordia-WI--Slow start, but the Falcons have been on a roll of late.

Edgewood--Not that deep a bench, yet still hanging in there.

Lakeland--lost a lot to graduation. Offense has been inconsistent.

Benedictine--lost one of their guards to injury--depends on whether anyone steps it up.

Aurora--unexpected loss at Marian hurts them

Lakeland and Edgewood--(in terms of number of overall losses) appear to be on the thinnest ice at this point.

WLC-- depends on how consistent they remain on offense--they have to play both Edgewood and Concordia, WI on the road yet--

:-X :-\ :-X :-\ ;) ;)

WLCALUM83

Lakeland women help their cause by knocking off Maranatha on the road tonight, 60-47.

WLCALUM83

Concordia-WI, Aurora and WLC all win--Benedictine and Edgewood both lose in NathCon action:

WLCALUM83

Concorida-WI, Aurora, and WLC each garner 1 more NathCon win today.

Pool B update:

Two weeks ago, I was ready to give Chapman a Pool B bid.  Conference play in the Pres AC and the NAthCon have permitted those conference leaders to build strong in-region records.  Teams are ranked by In-Region Percentage.

Team/Conference/Overall Record/In-Region Record/In-Region Percentage/In-Region games remaining

1)  Concordia WI/NAthCon/11-3/9-2/.818/ 9 + Conference Tourney
2)  Thomas More/Pres AC/13-3/11-3/.786/ 7 + Conference Tourney
3)  Westminster PA/Pres AC/12-4/11-4/.733/ 8 + Conference Tourney
4)  Aurora/NAthCon/10-5/10-4/.714/ 10 + Conference Tourney

5)  Chapman/Ind/14-5/11-5*/.688/ 4 + Possible conference tourney
6)  Lincoln/Ind/9-6/8-4/.667/ 6 (No Tourney confirmed)

  Wisconsin Lutheran/NAthCon/9-5/8-5/.616/ 11 + Conference Tourney

*Assuming Chapman won both games this weekend.

Corrections appreciated.

As far as remaining NathCon schedules for those "in-contention squads", WLC has 6 home games and 4 road games left in regular season. The other two have 5 home and 5 away, respectively. There still hasn't quite been enough separation between the leaders and the middle of the pack just yet. Concordia, WI can help its' cause big time if it just keeps on winning.

Concordia-WI women beat Lakeland, and Wisconsin Lutheran lost--now the Falcons have a 3-game lead in the NAthCon.

Remaining regular season In-Conference Schedules for NAthCon Pool B Contenders:

Aurora:    vs. Maranatha, vs. Edgewood, at Dominican, at Alverno, at Rockford.

Benedictine:    vs. Concordia-WI, at Lakeland, vs. WLC, at Maranatha, at Edgewood.

Concordia-WI:    at Benedictine, vs. WLC, at Maranatha, at Marian, vs. Dominican.

IMHO, On paper, Aurora has the easier schedule of the 3. Can't see Concordia-WI losing to WLC at home. All 3 teams need to be careful, though. Rockford won over the weekend (probably knocking WLC out of Pool B contention in the process,) and Dominican gave Edgewood a good run for its' money before losing. If the Spartans or Benedictine want the top seed for NAthCon's post-season tournament, they'll probably have to win out and get help. (In that event, however, unless other out-of-conference Pool B contenders stumble, the likelihood of any NAthCon women's team to get a bid to Nationals decreases some.)  :-X :-[ :-X :-[ :) ;) :) ;)

Ralph Turner

I think that the NAthCon gets one Pool B bid.

Concordia-WI knocked off Benedictine, IL on the road this evening.

WLCALUM83

Concordia-WI beat WLC by 10, clinching at least a tie for the NAthCon regular season title.
