Gentlemen, I've got a major dilemma(s).  As I respect opinions on this forum, I'm going to submit the situation and seek advice....

The problem is that I've got some friends (not great friends as my great friends know better than to get married during football season, but good friends) who have decided to get married.  Against my every urging, they have chosen dates that directly conflict with football season.

The first nuptual is scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 11 during which Wabash is scheduled to play at Wash U.  I've not been to a game at Wash U., it would be an opportunity for me to see a new D-III stadium, and that weekend happens to fall on the weekend of my 30th b-day which I had previously planned to celelbrate in the STL.  Now, the people that I had planned to stay with in the STL will be in Indiana for this wedding as will be most of the people that I had planned on going to the STL with.

The second nuptual is scheduled for Oct. 25, a home date with Wooster.  This nuptual, ironically enough, will happen in the STL.  The wedding party is a good friend of mine who is a best friend of a best friend of mine....and she's marrying a Danny of all things (she was warned, but upon meeting the guy at Bell this past year he's a decent guy all things considered).

So the question is....weddings or football?

No Problem.

1) Go to Wash U game.  Stay in vacant apt (vacant because your former friends chose not to go to the Wash U game.  Tell the Wash U wedding people you got mixed up on the weekends and thought you were going to the wedding for the Wooster people (in St. Louis).  When you figured it out you were in the wrong city on wrong weekend ... but there is a silver lining ... at least the LGs were in town.  After all ... you are getting older ... birthday and all.

2)  Reverse the process and story for the Wooster conflict.  And hope there is not talking between the two weddings about your memory.

Also ... be sure to send some nice presents to both AHEAD of time.  With a little luck four good things will happen: 1) the presents will be well received, 2) each wedding will get over it, 3) you will have built your reep for getting older and a little forgetful ... thereby permitting further renditions of the routine as needed in the future, and 4) you will see the Little Giants win in two great games.

Can you see a five-star you.tube post in the style of a Billy Wilder comedy, starring Wally Wabash?

Mid-ceremony, a "hot-wired" Caveman is perched at pew's edge, feigning visual attention to happenings at the alter while mentally focused on the opposition's red zone.  Our hero explodes from his seat, extending the split vent in his suit jacket and boisterously questioning the back judge's parental legitimacy, just as the minister/priest/rabbi/mullah (for the PC inclined) queries "Is there anyone here who...?"  ;D ;D ;D

Best friend of a best friend?  Hmmmm.  Mercenary thought processes engaged and locked on target.  Unless officiated by Reverend Schnorr (from Jerry Springer), chances are that post-nuptials will lack the atmosphere of a good tailgate and the ceremony is just a lengthier version of pre-game stretches and coin flip.  In both circumstances, the spectator pays for the privilege of attendance.  Bride and groom are usually oblivious anyway - at least from my personal experience.

Friends don't let friends marry Dannie males - unless there's a trust fund involved.  :D
Personally relieved that the dilemma is yours, and that my wife doesn't read this!

Wally...Go to the weddings....they happen only once (suppose too) and you have roughly 50 more football seasons left in you. Think of the downside, everyone will be talking smack about you IF you go to the games. Do what I do...if in your travels, you're near a D3/D2/1AA/1 facility...you go in and you go in strong...gameday or not. You'll be in or near STL sometime in your life, and you will see the stadium. Buddies...No Smack....Open Bar....Peace...The Scales of Justice Tilt....Wedding.

Go to the weddings Wally.

In the long term those friendships are going to be far more meaningful than the memories of a couple of ball games.

Tough issues Wally....

Some ideas:

1. Try the Farmers Almanac for bad weather predicted on those dates.
2. Try astrology tables predicting bad days to get married.

If neither of these work ...go for the Feng Shui approach: The angle of light in October will surely not allow the Yin and the Yang to proceed with optimum potential.

Wally it is all up to you.....If you really want to get to your goals you must sell them on potential.

---  Go to the games, Wally; send nice presents and plead amnesia. With any luck, they'll be renewing their vows in 25 years time (in the summer) : and you can go then. If not, you can attend the divorces and help divvie up the wedding presents.      :P

WashU plays on an historic field (google Francis Field).

A couple of years ago a Wabash alumnus got married in the fall in Columbus, Ohio. His now-wife is an Ohio State grad so half of the guests were worried about the Buckeyes game and the other half were worried about the Wabash game. They picked a weekend when tOSU was playing IU and Wabash played Oberlin. Now THAT is considerate. ;) Of course, the Longhorns were playing Nebraska that day so it wasn't entirely good.

Kidding aside, I'd say go to the weddings, Wally. This year will be the 122nd season of football at Wabash. These folks will, if they're lucky, only get married  a few times in their life.

Remember, I missed a Wabash home game against OWU for a wedding, and had a stand in "first down" person.

Gentlemen.....What is happening to the board? No posts in almost 4 days? That's not like you-you would almost think its the off season. I suppose the wedding issue caused everyone to be introspective. C'mon Spring practice! ???

Hoops season is about at its zenith, 64...I've been immersed in championship week, hence the absence.  Gotta be up to speed for the office pool!

Re: weddings....I appreciate all of the advice.  As of now, I really don't think there's any way that I could not go to these weddings and be able to peacefully lay head to pillow at night.  Looks like I'll be missing my first home game...ever.   :'( :'( :'(

These receptions better have open bars.   :D

Sorry-forgot about hoops, the big ten tournament, selection Sunday, and all that jazz. (and you're from Indiana). I tend to forget about it when they started wearing baggy pants, which are an abomination. Red Kenney, who was the trainer (and baseball coach) and my roomate on trips when I was a student manager in football, 1960-3, used to say he couldn't see what all the fuss was about coaching basketball-"you just pick out 5 guys and send them out there". Then, Red was a pitcher in the Boston Red Sox system and pitchers aren't exactly athletes

Honor Scholars just happened.  This is a time when a lot of kids who will be Frosh next year are on campus ... not the least of which are footballers to be.  Does anyone have any skinny as to recruiting status coming out of this weekend?
