Ken Anderson 16 seasons with the Bengals, Augustana.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Anderson_(football_player)#NFL_career

According to your Wikipedia link, Anderson was drafted in 1971. Division III wasn't formed until '73, so he's not actually a product of D3 as we know it.

Metzelaars is still the bar.  ;)

Ryan-thanks for the help in restoring Pete Metzelaars, even though your methodology might seem, to some, as specious. I was going to tell some stories about Clyde "Bulldog" Turner and Ed Sprinkle, both legendary Bears who went to Hardin-Simmons, a d3 member but well before 1973.
One record of Pete's will stand---most consecutive super bowls lost as a big tight end. That must be the title of the position, since EVERY football announcer, invariably describes the play as "completed to---or intended for---his big tight end". ;)

D1 just can't figure it out.   So we will continue with the popularity contest.

Quick recruiting class thoughts...I'm hearing a lot of positive things about the Wabash class of 2012.  The murmurs are particularly positive given the late jump that Coach Raeburn and his staff got on this recruiting year.  I think we've got to tip our hats to the staffers who stuck with it and picked up the slack during the transition period from December to February.

Anyway, I'm hearing that Wabash is getting deposits from some very good players both in state and from around the country.  I think we'll end up being pleasantly surprised at both the size of this class and the quality of players that come out of this class.

This week has been a very good one in recruiting.  Hopefully deposits will continue to come in.  The latest prize is is a DE who is a North/South All Star.

Number-wise, I think we are ahead of where we thought we'd be and the quality is solid.  There are still some key guys out there though...

While waiting for a more definitive recruiting report from BB 16, I ran across a report from Forbs Magazine as to the top liberal arts colleges in American along with the corresponding chart from US News.   It is illustrative of the problem of guns and butter, even in Div III.  Here goes (first column is ranking in Forbes and second column is ranking in US News):

For more info:
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2008/0519/030.html?partner=email

Wabash          10     52
Oberlin            19     20
Kenyon            22     32
Kazoo              30     67
DePauw           31     49
Earlham           37     69
Wheaton         39     56
Alleghney        49     85
Woo                64     71
Hanover          73     91
Denison          74     52

OAC Conference Schools .... ZERO represented

Realize they're no longer on the schedule due to the UAA relationship, but noted that OWU was listed as well in the top sixty, vs "91" in US News, alongside accolades earned by Albion, Calvin, and Hillsdale (yeah, I know - 1200 students playing DII).

And the point is - besides Forbes not being a football fan?

Please hurry, football season!!!

Thought Hillsdale was nominally D2.  Not in their athletic prowess, but aversion to using the FAFSA and participating in government monies excluded them from the D3 basic format.  Does beg the question what is fiat.

To be accurate I think OWU and Wabash are not on one another's schedule this year (or next) due to the ever mysterious NCAC power ranking system.  I don't believe the UAA agreement has any effect on who plays who inside the NCAC.

I would expect this break in the Wabash/OWU series to be a brief one.  I plan to see the Bishops on the schedule again in 2010.  In fact, the 2010 and 2011 schedules are posted and Wabash and OWU will in fact be playing one another again early in 2010.  Wabash actually opens with Wooster followed by OWU in 2010.

Interesting to note on the 2010 schedule....Wabash finishes vs. Allegheny, @ Witt, vs. DePauw in 2010.  Wowza.   :o

appologies for not including OWU and Albion.  meant to do it, just slipped.  as for Calvin ... they do not offer football.  as to Hillsdale ... they are Div II.  my focus was Div III and generally looking at the recognized (at least by some in the recognition business) academic institutions anf their football success verses what we see as the typically ranked top 25 in Div III football in our area.  that is all.  point being that it is tough having both guns and butter ... even in Div III with no scholarships.  and ... NO ... I am not at all in favor of the Earlham-esk IV Divisions.

Grove City is D-III and refuses said government monies.

PC, have to admit what I know about Hillsdale is only anecdotal from lunch counter conversations had with a Hillsdale parent.  The bulk of the argument weighed in on the refusal of the government grant in aid, but the mentioned nonuse of FAFSA colored the argument's inspection.

Grove City's the alma mater of the once rush champ?  Surely as an NCAA Division 3 insitution they qualify grant in aid somehow whether it be from public or private coffers?  Is there a FAFSA alternative?  Aside from academic scholarship, was under the impression grant in aid at our level be need based.  But alas, Bowers had Weinke monies which are different in kind from Bloom's?

Still believe the word scholarship is thrown around loosely.  Most, and by most a huge majority, athletic scholarships do not meet the doling institutions' standards of scholarship as set forth by their constitutions.  Nothing a little amending wouldn't cure, but not sure tax repercussions wouldn't arise, primarily for the student athlete but the universities as well.

Nonparticipation in the FAFSA process might help the San Diego State probable transient students find new academic quarter.

With all due respect, in reality, you can't use that arguement i.e."...yeah, I know - 1200 students".  Then what about the likes of Mercyhurst, Gannon, Tiffen or for that matter Union (NY), Colorado College, Ferris State (DII in fb, other sports), playing at other levels in fb, hockey; OR schools like Northwestern and Rice?  Point being smaller enrollments playing at a higher level - it all comes down to how an institution wants to run its program and how much $ they want to put into it with regard to what level they want to be (notwithstanding putting the talent level/competitive aspect aside).  Just MO ;D ::) :)

Apologies for poor composition, and faux pax regarding OWU and NCAC power index.  Bloody, bad form... :-[

Reference to Hillsdale wasn't meant to be argumentative - just a point that this neophyte realized they aren't of this division.  As a longtime subscriber to Imprimis, three family alums/survivors of George Roche's "battle for independence" in the early 1970s, a good friend who captained Muddy's last two teams, and personal, summer course experience, there's familiarity.  ;)  Current "neighborhood," lib arts colleges are equally split -"Emorrhoids" and Oglethorpe go III, the Paladins, Presby, and Wofford play II, and then there's Davidson...

My only "tongue in cheek" retort was directed to Wabco's OAC line.  Just felt that the CCAP criteria must not have included football prowess... ;D ;D

Did anyone else notice the 2010 & 11 schedule includes OWU v Denison and Oberlin v Kenyon as non-conference games?  Also Kenyon's cushy schedule comes to an end as their second place finish in 2005 earned them the dubious #3 power rating and games with Wittenberg, Wabash, Allegheny, Wooster, and OWU.

I didn't study the schedule closely enough to catch that the other day, but you're right.  Once again, we're playing non-conference games against our own conference.  This really grinds my gears.  Shame on OWU/Denison/Oberlin/Kenyon.  Get out there and schedule some games against teams in other conferences and help the NCAC build a better reputation.

BTW, how does Earlham get to sketch out on the UAA agreement?  Does anybody have any insight on this?
