Saw your reply over on our MIAA board - thanks.  I thought I would just reply over on this one since that will be where you most likely will read and post more frequently.

UGA, that's great.  I've met and am an acquaintance of one of their team physicians (have the UGA Football history book and have even met Herschel Walker).  Also, even though our daughter is a "transplanted Michiganian" down there, she is a UGA fan instead of your rival GT ;)!  (My dad was of U of Mich grad).

Anyway, while indeed playing in front of that many fans at a DI game (and/or attending one as spectator/season ticket holder as you are) is a fantastic experience, I agree with Ralph Turner that I think you'll find that type of excitement at a DIII game.  Our "big attendance" games of 4,000-5,000 for arch rivals (to over 7,000 for championship games) may not seem much in comparison obviously, however, I will tell you it does seem like a big DI game to us who played in those, but also even a 1,000-2,000 spectator game at DIII can be wild time for all.  I'm sure your son will find this to be true even at Hiram at times.  Take care and we'll see you around the boards.

COUNTDOWN :  50 - days (1200 Hours, 72,000 minutes, 4,320,000 seconds)  until kick-off in Granville.

Uuuuughhhhh!

Does anyone know if Wabash will ever be scheduled to play a game on opening weekend?  As long as I have known them, they have taken their bye on week one?

It's been that way as long as I've been around. There's been speculation as to why, but never any confirmation.

It is getting close isn't it?!?!  So I see that the Terriers are doing a little bit out of state and heard they have a huge class coming in of about 70 to 75?  Who do you think has the best class for the NCAC this year?

I'll get back to you in four years on this one.  :)

Macleod,
A few days late, but I don't get here as often as I would like.  Davey Maurer relied on "sawed-off shotguns and cigar butts," his reference to fast, quick, aggressive players.  Our last Stagg Bowl winner (1975 I think my ring says) featured a 190 lb. All-OAC defensive tackle.  We relied on great coaching, and our "secret weapon" was computer-generated (waaaayyyy ahead of the times) scouting report for the opponent's offensive tendencies, maybe one of the first of its' kind.
We played stout, stout defense, and featured top-notch tailbacks and athletic linemen to move the ball down the field.  Our trademark was outstanding speed and athlethicism, and combined with the aforementioned coaching and scouting, we more than held our own.
In 1975 we beat defending D-2 champ Delaware on their home field, holding them scoreless until about the last minute of play.  Their All-American fullback was bigger then most, if not all,  of our defensive starters and most, if not all, of our offensive starters.
We beat favorite Ithaca in the Stagg Bowl 28-0. I could go on and on about era, but I think you get the picture.....

P.S.  The 1975 Stagg Bowl was on ABC, but I don't know if it is archived anywhere.

Superfoot Wallace

DRT, the defense with the 190 pound tackle, what was the front?  50, 40, 30 or even 60?  The DC tenure, Coach Willis through Coach Woods, employed some superior undersized interior linemen.  Helps there were a few streetsweepers at MLB to complement base and tackle play between the B gaps.  Felt the defense eventually morphed from Russel Maryland-Jimmy Johnson-Dave Wannstedt Hurricane 4-3 to the Sapp-Dungy-McFarland Tampa 2.  Tackles that can both tilt traps and shoot 3i are the height of the art.

What we've been seeing of late has been, whether by alignment or personnel, a movement toward odd numbered fronts and coverages.  8)

Watching the 82 BW-Witt tilt from the BW site, saw they were employing a 4-4 flex ala the Staubach Cowboys.  In today's game, feel a odd front flexed tackle has to be paired with cross hatched zone blitzes.  That is, unless a flat numbered odd front has an edge rusher that could play tight end as well.  :-X

Inverts aside, corners that can play both two and three are a precious commodity at any level.  Safeties and MLBs' that can integrate four as the triangle moves from the front of attack to the blanket of coverage require great coaching in addition to personnel, not to mention great savvy on the part of ends to contain the swing on jet streaks.  :P

It's a great luxury to be able to recall players who have exhibited all these skills over the years.  "Stogeys and Sawed-Off shotguns," gotta remember that one.   ;)

Congratulations are in order to Kenyon's Yancy Edwards for being selected to the D3football.com 2008 preseason AA team.  Edwards is the only NCAC player on the exclusive list.

Edwards is one of Kenyon's (10) Florida players.   I'll telling ya, living down here, Florida has a ton of talent that doesn't play ball in College.   There are so few D3 schools in the deep South. (I Don't think Florida has any, may be wrong.).  Establishing the pipelines are the key.

Great honor for Yancy and I am glad he'll get to face a tough Wabash D line for the first time.

Also, looking at Kenyon's roster, they have one of the most geographically diverse rosters I think I have seen in D3.

They list a roster of 53 -   (15 are from Ohio and the rest are from 15 other states)  Is it Kenyon's academic quality that is drawing student athletes from all over to the school?

Indeed, no Division III schools in Florida.

Kenyon, Oberlin and Denison have the best 'national reputations' of those in the NCAC and they do tend to get student athletes from a broader area. I believe the student bodies at those schools are also from a wider geographic footprint, so it fits. Also, in football and men's hoops, they're at a disadvantage in getting the Ohio D-3 players away from the OAC and NCAC bullies.

Isn"t Wabash currently one notch ahead of Denison according to USN&WR?

Yes, the Big Red and Little Giants were tied both with an overall score of 64. :)

Hiram and Wittenberg did not appear in the rankings which listed the top 106 colleges.

Nice academic showing by the NCAC with 8 of 10 colleges ranked! ;D

USN&WR rankings are published annually so there should be a new list in another month.
