And the next question would be, is that really such a surprise?

The Wabash 2008 roster has been posted.  Somewhere around 45 freshman and 120+ players.  Not a bad number of frosh considering the amount of time it took to make the new coaching hire.  Does anyone have any details on the class?

And the #1 jersey goes to...

Andrew Rode.

Congrats Andrew!  Wear it well!

I see CP Porter is not on the roster.  Wish him the best.

I 2nd that comment on CP.

Also, I am glad to see , Salinas, Zinmaster (Great football name) & Austin made it on the list.   Those are the 3 studs that i know the most about.   Look for Austin to play some real minutes on a D-Line that is stacked already.   Salinas, with a little experience, COULD be another great Wabash QB, before his career is up.   Zinmaster, from what I have heard is as tough as they get.  We'll see.

Getting closer.

I'll post more as I find out more, but one of the first things I check out is the North/South All Star roster.  Here are the names from the 2008 North/South All Star roster that pop up on the posted Wabash roster:

Craig Austin, DE, 6-5 240 Evansville Reitz
Zach Hall, DT, 6-2 240 Speedway
Luke Zinsmaster, DE, 6-2 200 Logansport
Brady Young, WR, 6-1 185 Delta

Four Indiana all stars.  Not shabby.  Also of note is Josh Linthicum, an OL from Springfield, OH.  The internets tells me that Josh had offers (academic offers of course) from Wabash, Wooster, Mount Union, Ohio Northern, Wittenberg, and Ashland.  Josh, wisely, chose to attend Wabash.  I know roughly zilch about Mr. Linthicum's football prowess, but if these are the schools he had the opportunity to attend, then I think Wabash is probably getting a pretty good player here.

And...

Two (2!) incoming freshmen gridders from Griffith!!!

Welcome, Doug Ashenbaugh and Kyle Najar!

Both had good careers at Griffith, so hopefully they will continue to progress at Wabash.  Kyle plays baseball as well, so that should be worth an extra gold star.

Found this little piece on Doug from Region Sports Network (RSN Awards, 2007)

Heart & Soul Award: Doug Ashenbaugh – Griffith Panthers

This gritty, blue-collar senior did the dirty work for Russ Radtke and the Panthers. A former 1,000-yard rusher, Ashenbaugh took one for the team this season, moving over to tight end – a non-glamorous position in the Panther offense – contributing eight catches, 138 yards (17.3 avg.) and three touchdowns to the Panther attack. The Griffith coaching staff credits Ashenbaugh with a blocking efficiency rating of 91%.

On defense, Ashenbaugh totaled 45 solo tackles and 37 assists for the Panther defense. His defensive numbers include six tackles for loss and seven sacks.

Although others may have contributed more to the cause statistically speaking, no one meant more to his team than Ashenbaugh did to the Panthers. Besides, stats don't measure a players effort or leadership qualities, both of which Ashenbaugh displayed on every down of the 2007 season, whether he was catching touchdown passes or as the long snapper on special teams. Without the contributions of this hard-working senior, the Panthers season would likely have come to an end much earlier than it did.

Coach Radtke says: "(Doug) set an example for others to follow. He always picked other guys up. He realized his team needed him on the offensive line, accepted the situation and it worked out to his advantage – he gets his picture on our "Wall of Fame" because he made first-team all-state at tight end.

I can't think of anyone that's come through our program in a while that's more deserving of this kind of award."

Sounds like a quality recruit to me.

Wally -

Was Chris Deig not an All-Star?   Nice to see another Deig at Wabash.  I thought I heard he was going to play at Indiana State?   Maybe they invited him to walk on or maybe it was someone else.   Here is a nice article on him.

Chris Deig is not listed on the North/South roster.  Do keep in mind though that the North/South team is a pretty exclusive club.  There are a lot of good players that don't make that particular roster.

WW can back me up here but I called this last year. I look forward to Mr. Rode having a monster year.

Found this about Jack Ruddy......I don't know anything about him but was checking since he is from the Chicago area. It was preseason info listed on him last year as "player to watch."

I met John Holm (Naperville Central) at a Wabash recruiting event last January here in the Chicago area. I spoke with him at great length and met his parents as well. A fine man I would say...soon to be a Wabash Man.
I look forward to seeing him play!!!

He will be also playing baseball. He was All Area Honorable Mention as a Catcher.

Sure did.  It'll be interesting to see how the WR position fleshes itself out this year.  Rode obviously is the guy coming back with the most experience.  JT Moore should see his duties increase beyond returning kicks and see more time with the offense.  And then of course there are some young guys that have been waiting their turn that we'll get to see for the first time on Saturdays this fall.  Wabash had a lot of receptions graduate last year, but I think Hudson will have no shortage of capable hands to throw to in 2008.

Zinmaster is a beast, actually played in both Indiana All Star games...football and baseball - I believe will be a 2-sport guy at Wabash.  The WR, Young from Delta caught a 40-yard TD strike in the North/South All Star game.  Salinas is the stud QB - Huff-like build at 6'0 203 - comes from the same high school as Gabe Guererro - Pleasanton TX - see Youtube.  Wally - the OH lineman (Linthicum) had it down to Mount Union or us, hopefully that is a good sign.  I met him on campus and looks like a good one.  Bashbro - Deig's brother is not playing football at Bash - last I heard.  The Austin kid led the state in sacks from E-ville Reitz with 24.

Congrats to Andrew Rode and the #1 jersey.  That has become quite the honor and guys have really stepped up.  If he can stay healthy, he will be a scary matchup for any DB.

WabashCPA - just for you...2 baseball recruits to watch...RHP, Crawfordsville - Andrew Swart (immediate impact) sick stats to help lead C-ville to the 3A state title and Logansport shortstop Sam Starbuck.

Bashbro - got your message yesterday, will try to give you a call this afternoon.

Hmmm.... His name is on the new football roster.  I hadn't thought he was going to be there.
