No need for a line.  I'll shout it from the mountaintops (if there were any here in the midwest)...

The place you're looking for is the Thurman Cafe.  Don't let the bland website fool you...it is very much worth the trip.

You just beat me to the meat of BB's inquiry, Wally!  Was just there a couple of weeks' back - great little place in German Village!

I can't help but notice that our rivals to the south have conveniently not mentioned the Princeton Review on their website.

Thanks Wally & Caves....

Looks like they serve up some real gut-busters.   It is officially on my dinner schedule.

Why should you go for it on 4th down?

Gang,

What are the prospects for Oberlin and Kenyon this season?  They are two of Case's longtime rivals in the state of Ohio, and both are on this year's schedule.

We've long dominated the series with Oberlin (haven't lost to them in about 25 years), but from what I've seen on their website, they're expected to be much better this season.  Supposedly, their best offensive players all return.

Last season, we defeated Kenyon, but Kenyon succeeded in outgaining us.  We won, largely by taking advantage of some of the opposing team's mistakes.  This season, the result might be different.

Could someone familiar with those two programs give me an idea of what to expect from them this year?

Thanks!

As a playoff team returning most of their key players, CWRU should have no problems with Oberlin and Kenyon.  Kenyon took a step backward last year after a surprising 2006 season.  Ramsey is a very good coach over at Oberlin and has done a good job with what he has to work with.  Oberlin has much of their offense coming back, but the straw that stirred that drink IMO (Schubert) has graduated.  RV Carroll is a capable RB and Mangan can be a decent QB at times, but without a guy like Schubert for defenses to focus on, I'll expect those guys to have a rougher go of it in 2008.

Both teams have offenses that can score points (both were at about 31 ppg in 2007), but sadly neither team seems to give a lick about playing any defense (both gave up well over 30 ppg in 2007).  I would expect Whalen and all of his returning targets to have their way with these teams...CWRU shouldn't have any trouble.

Wally,

Last year, Kenyon basically shot itself in the foot when they played us.  Like I mentioned, they won the total yardage war.  However, thanks in no small part to some turnovers by Kenyon, we were able to score some giveaway points, and jump out to a 21-0 lead.  At that point, it was too hard for them to come back.  I'm worried that this year, they might not beat themselves, and might beat us instead.

We were more dominating in our game vs. Oberlin.  However, the previous few seasons, Oberlin had gotten a lot closer.

Oberlin and Kenyon are tremendous academic institutions.  Their academic orientation is different from Case's, being liberal arts colleges, but I have a profound respect for the scholars that attend both institutions.  It'd be good to see them both be successful on the gridiron.

Most of Kenyon's yardage was gained in the second half when most if not all of the #1 D was out of the game.  And they have to replace a three-year starter at QB.  Whalen was 9-9 in the first half.  Missed on his first pass in the second then completed the next for a TD.  He didn't play after that series.

Depth is a major problem for both schools, although Kenyon just announced an incoming class of 26 (14 different states).  Oberlin's roster only lists 6 O linemen (2 returning starters and 2 frosh) and they only have 17 incoming freshmen.  In addition to Schubert, they lost two other NCAC 1st teamers on D, Palmer and Pisani.

Are those real recruiting numbers?  Wow...I know the "pool of athletes" for those schools are somewhat limited...but those numbers caught me off guard.

The numbers are for real.  This year's Kenyon class has about ten more recruits than last year's.  I count only 46 players on the Oberlin roster.  Kenyon will have 68 if all of last year's non-seniors return.

Alright fans...7 days until Media Day.  Time to post our personal preseason NCAC rankings out here in the open for debate, discussion, and mutual ridicule.  Alright, mostly mutual ridicule.  Now's the time!  I'll keep track of the "NCAC Fan Preason Poll" results and post the final tally when the coach's and media polls are released next Friday.

I'll be posting my 1-10 early next week...I need some time to think it over.   :)
