Mr. Ypsi

frank,

That did clarify it, but my reaction was to the fact that while giving too much aid to athletes would bring sanctions, apparently it is perfectly acceptable to give LESS aid to athletes than to non-athletes.

Good chance I can see the game at Oberlin......October could be as rough as September. Kenyon, Case, Washington are on deck. This game will show where the Bishops can go....stop the turn-overs, "O" must score pts...but show character, poise and...confidence. The Bishops have always put a run of W's together...Saturday would be the place to start. Good Luck Bishops

Seriously guys, you do not believe that a school could award what some colleges term their "Presidential Scholarships" (i.e. to the highest scoring SAT, 4.0, highly involved volunteer community activities h.s. student applicant) to a student-athlete (for the sake of argument, let's say he is indeed a football player) who has those credentials and thus would place him in the pool of consideration among all students whether a potential athlete or not who is applying to the school?  It is my understanding that all students at any school can be considered for such specific, legit designated awards at a DIII college - perhaps I misunderstand the rule you are talking about.  I will check with our college administrators tomorrow about this just for the sake of "further research" ;D

Mr. Ypsi

former, of course an athlete could be awarded such a scholarship.  The rule is that scholarships to athletes as a group cannot exceed the scholarships to the student body at large without eyebrows being raised and a possible investigation.

What frosted me was that apparently the reverse situation does not violate any d3 rules.

Mr. Ypsi:

Thanks for the clarification.  I understand what the jist of the discussion was now.  I would have to agree with you on this.  If a ton of student-athletes were the highest ranked/highest scoring students among all the applicants, why not should they get "the $"?!!! ;D

On other topics:
1) I saw where Eastern Michigan's QB from St. Johns, MI (north of Lansing) Sr. Andy Schmidt, who started against Michigan State, apparently lost his starting position the last two weeks.  However, I guess the player who took over was injured in last week's game and is now out, possibly for the season, thus returning Schmidt as the starter.  I always hate to see a senior have a crappy deal like that.  Although Eastern is not having a stellar year (at least by their standards), "me thinks" that Head Coach Groh is "grasping at straws" for anything that might give him a "vote of confidence" and save his job.  I think he might be gone at the end of this season if it doesn't improve - he's been there for sometime now and their program has not improved.  You and I (and others) have discussed this before, and you know the situation there way better than us, yet some people would say that is an impossible situation/program.  Yet people said that about Northwestern, Western Michigan, Wake Forest, and even Olivet (MI) and they have at least made their programs respectable and competitive.  I believe EMU can too, eventually, with the right people.  But it is not easy.

2)  Hey, friend, if you are going to a game tomorrow, dress warm.  Although it is supposed to be nice (compared to the past 5 days this week here in Michigan), it is colder today even though the sun was out, and now a little of the "fall cloudiness".  Then again, it is just that good old fashioned fall weather.  Either way, I don't care as long as it doesn't rain tomorrow for the game (and our Alumni Lacrosse game at Homecoming before the football game).

Anyway, have a great weekend.  Best of luck to your team and the same for everyone else here and our fellow boards.  Drive safe.

FYI -

CC returns to Central Indiana tomorrow with his 2-2 Drake Bulldogs to play Butler in Indy.

With Franklin's earlier win over Butler this year, it will be an interesting measuring stick to see how Drake does with Butler.

Good luck to Coach Creighton and his Bulldogs.

12:00 4Q and the 2nd team is coming in.  The only way I thought Allegheny could stay with Wabash today was if Wabash made turnovers.  Hasn't happened, and this is as good a game as Wabash has put together since the playoff game against Case Western.
Long shall we sing thy praises, Old Wabash

Final from Hollett Little Giant Stadium

Allegheny 7
Wabash 48

And by special request the return of the Victory Haiku.

Gators have no bite
Little Giants dominate
Happy Homecoming

Dannies get spanked 55-13 by Millsaps and in the 5th week of the year, their playoff chances are done....Wabash blows AC out.... Evan Sobecki is back...... all is good in the world.
