Denison gets off to a quick 2nd half start - big KO return from Krempasky, and a couple additional runs from Krempasky get the Big Red in the end zone.

Wabash 35
Denison 7

Chamblee answers with a long KO return of his own.  Wes is having quite a game.

Wabash answers with a Hudson to Lemond TD strike.  So much for any momentum for Denison.

Wabash 42
Denison 7

Two of the best catches I have seen at any level in a longtime in this game today.
Why should you go for it on 4th down?

Hudson to Lemond for a diving TD in the end zone - excellent catch!

Wabash 49
Denison 7

Interesting note - Wabash goes for it on 4th and 9 earlier in the drive from the Denison 40 and converts.  Looks like a take-no-prisoners attitude.

Schwami

Kody "Santonio" Lemond! (had to drop in a Stillers reference ;))

The Lemond and Chamblee tandem is awesome, and we get 'em for two more years (this year and next)!  Sweet!

Looking forward to Chase Belton's debut  :)

We're final

Probably couldn't ask for a better opening game.  Let's keep it going.

HI all. Just returned from the Hiram-Gallaudet game. For Hiram it was a debacle. Here's basically what went down:

First and foremost congrats to Gallaudet. Those kids earned the victory and Im sure that since they dont win often, they are on top of the world right now.

In Hiram things are different.  Lots of heads hung low. I'll try not to 'go off' but its hard not to. Hirams coaching staff, for whatever reason, decided they were going to play CONSERVATIVE. I think they threw the ball twice in the first half. 3rd and 8? Run it up the middle! They started and stuck with senior QB/WR Lee SHam at QB for most of the first half. When they finally went to promising fresman QB Brendan Rehor he threw 2 passes and had Hiram at the Gall. 10 yard line. With 2 seconds left in the half and traling 7-0 they went for it instead of kicking the FG. Completed a pass to the 1 yard line as time expired.

2nd half...same as the first. They went BACK to Sham and did the same thing as the first...running the ball. Unable to move the chains the defense stayed on the field all day. Eventually it caught up with them. They couldnt stop Gallaudets triple option. And the score got out of hand.

Rehor is a PLAYER though. Hopefully the coaches learn from their mistakes and for the good of the team play him and let the kid wing it. We're Hiram for God's sake. What the HELL do we have to lose. It was so frustrating to watch what amounted to a stubborn, egotiscital game plan by the Hiram coaching staff.

Senior Lee Sham is a fine wideout so its not like you have to 'bench' the kid. He'll get plenty of time at WR. One more thing about Sham is that he is a great kid and as much of a "team player" as anyone.

Sorry for the rant all. Congrats to all you that have one today and good luck to those who fell short this week!

Back from the Ville...

So, I guess we can call that a good start for 2009 Wabash football.  Game notables from my perspective:

- A year ago, Wabash gave up yards and points to these guys.  Not so much today.  Just the seven points and just 139 yards.  Denison absolutely couldn't get anything going at any point today.

- Wes Chamblee is frightening.  I'll never know how he didn't get into the end zone until the playoffs last year, but he found the end zone three times today (twice on runs) and he looks every bit like a guy that can take it the distance every time he gets his hand on the ball.  Great game by Wes today.

- Kody Lemond's TD catch in the third quarter was ridiculous.  That was pretty close to the Ryan Short TD catch vs. MacMurray in '02 (for those who can remember that gem).  Tremendous one handed play.

- Mambourg!  Tommy Mambourg has pretty clearly cemented himself as the guy in the backfield for Wabash.  I think most of us were expecting the running back committee situation today, but until the second unit came in in the third quarter the Mambourg was the only RB to touch the football.

- Great effort by the hard hats today.  139 yards and just six first downs allowed.  It was awesome to see Kraft get a chance to score in his first game back.

- I was a little puzzled to see the LGs not try to get some points at the end of the first half.  Why all the fourth down attempts?  I have zero information on this, but here's my best guess: Whitehead didn't kick in the R/W at all, presumably because he was dinged.  If he's still not 100%, ER might be holding him out of FGs unless it is really necessary.  It wasn't necessary today.

Aside from the one really bad pass that Hudson threw (which got picked off), it's hard for me to find much fault with this one.  I'll have to stay a bit tempered by this...it was Denison and Wabash is supposed to beat Denison comfortably, but there aren't nearly as many worry spots after game 1 as there was a year ago.

Onward to Hyde Park next week!

That block was awesome.  I'm not sure Hudson is quite the natural passer that Knot was, but he's definitely the better blocker/runner.  He had a few great downfield blocks and a great run.  It's a real pleasure to watch him play each week.  Very few QBs sell out like he does.

It probably doesn't hurt that he's bigger than most of the guys he's putting blocks on.   :)
