For anyone still curious about Gheny's new uniforms, they've got some pictures posted from the Wooster game.

Those are much better looking than those faux St. Louis Rams unis they had the last few years. I also like the "A" helmet better than the old script "Gators". Very nice look. I still think Wabash's home unis (not the all-red) are the best in the conference though.  ;)

L'il Giant,

Definitely agree about getting rid of the Rams rip-off uni's.  The block A is nice, but I was hoping for a return to the O'Keefe era logo of "AC" in the shape of a football.  Still, seeing the old color scheme back is nice.

My favorite uniform when I played was our away uni's which consisted of blue pants, white jerseys, and yellow hats.

I've often wondered about the convention of wearing dark jerseys at home and white on the road. Basically every college in America does that except LSU.  But some teams look better in their white/light unis.

But then, in hoops the convention is opposite, light at home, dark on the road. And baseball teams usually wear white at home. I guess I just read too much Uni Watch.

Believe me you're not the only one who's wondered about uniform color conventions.  Guess its just one of those things where you wear certain schemes because "that's the way its always been done". Of course, there are some black sheep (like LSU as you mentioned).  The NFL has the Cowboys, Redskins, and Browns (oddest of all since their white uniforms make them look like a Pop Warner team).

Vince: The Browns have been wearing all-white home uniforms since their founding in 1946. If any Pop Warner team wears similar uniforms, I suspect it believes that it looks like the Browns

The Dolphins wear white at home as well, unless they break out their UGLY orange unis.

The NHL now has the home team wearing the dark jerseys.

The NHL uni switch happened a couple of years ago and it really really confused me the first time I saw it.

The Dolphins have hideous unis. But growing up here in Texas I was used to seeing the Cowboys wear white 15 games a year, and blue only when they played at Washington. Now most NFL teams have to have their two jerseys, plus the "throwback", plus the ubiquitous black jersey for no other reason than to sell more jerseys.

God I hate the NFL sometimes.

I always thought Pop Warner uni's were bland because that was all the parents could afford.  Now I found out that it's because they were copying the Browns? I can't believe they lied to me.  >:(

We've certainly got a lot of late night activity here.

Reality Check -

Intersting you should ask the question about DIII players in the Super Bowl.  I just got home from a short biz trip up to Canton.  I made my first trip to the Hall.  What a great place.

I realized that there are at least 11 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame that either; played, coached at, or attended a DIII school.

I couldn't find one that scored a TD in a Superbowl, although, there was a couple that scored a ton of points in the NFL. (Before the 1st Superbowl)

Can anyone guess?  The first person to guess five of the 11 will get to bad mouth Depauw whenever they want on this board without recourse.   :)

Why should you go for it on 4th down?

My personal Pete Metzelaars story...he was visiting campus for a trustees meeting in January of '99 I believe and I caught him right before a hoops game.  I was sports editor of the paper on campus at the time and asked for him an interview.  He was leaving directly after the game, but said if we could find a spot he'd give me an interview at halftime.  We raided then head football coach Greg Carlson's office (go Fighting Poets by the way) and conducted the interview.  The crowning moment of my journalism career came during that interview....I didn't do the research (I only had the first half of the hoops game to prepare), but I figured that he was the only person who's played in four Bell games and four Super Bowls.  I asked how the two compare...he laughed a little and said that's the first time anybody had ever asked him that question.

For what it's worth, Pete is a great guy and gave me the best 15-minute interview I've ever done.  I certainly wish him all the best as a coach in the NFL.  I'm sure he'll do great...it seems that that's about all he knows is how to succeed.

Not always on the Browns. I have seen them wear Brown/White and Brown/Orange at home games as well.

I admit I did a little research and actually found 12 connections to DIII in the HOF. Here are my findings...

George Allen (coach) - Alma
Fritz Pollard (player/first black head coach in 1921) - Bates
Marv Levy (coach) - Coe
Chuck Noll (coach) - Dayton (DIII at the time)
Don Shula (coach) - JCU
George Musso (player) - Millikin (bonus fact: played against Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford in seperate college games)
George Preston Marshall (owner/founder) - Randolph Macon (bonus fact: Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction would not have been made possible if Marshall hadn't started halftime pageantry)
John "Blood" McNally (player/coach)
Walt Kiesling (player/coach) - St. Thomas (MN)
Wilbur "Pete" Henry (player) - Washington & Jefferson
Jimmy Conzelman (player/coach/owner) - Washington (St. Louis)
Al Davis (owner.administrator) - Wittenberg College

There's some real big names in there.  I am impressed after doing a little digging.

The best thing about seeing Metzelaars up close is how huge he is. That AFC Champ ring looks like a normal ring on him but is actually the size of my car.  :o
