Reality Check -

Good stuff.

The only other ones I could find were:

Clyde Turner - Hardin-Simmons
Earl "Dutch" Clark - Colorado College

That would make 14, which is 6% of the group enshrined.

Good work

Al Davis went to Wittenberg - Wally should have fun with that one.

You learn something everyday....After reading about Al Davis, I got curious.  So I did some more research and found another interesting fact.  Wittenberg was actually founded in Wooster, OH...after 3 years it was moved to Springfield.  By the way, Al Davis didn't graduate from Witt.  For anyone who might care.

I might be wrong...Davis may have graduated from Witt....if anyone still cares...if I find different, I will let you know.

Holmes Update from the Springfield paper...Holmes resumed throwing last week.  Fincham was quoted as saying, "We're going to play it by ear.  We want him back as soon as possible for our team, but we want to be smart with it for his welfare."

You know they have October 22 circled on the calendar.  My guess, we'll see him get some action next week, and then will try to go against Wabash.  Tough game to return but that starts their stretch run.  Any other thoughts???

You are correct - he attended Wittenberg, but graduated from Syracuse in 1950.

BB16:

Holmes won't take a hit until he sees game action--can you imagine Fincham's thoughts/state of mind when that does happen in a game?  I remember that exact experience as a father watching a son "return" from such an injury to start the IHSAA playoffs a few years back--your heart is in your throat.  Not a pleasant experience.

If he returns vs. Wabash (or any other team) here are some questions:

-will he be at full strength 100%
-will he be effective - timing w/receivers, accuracy
-will he be tentative - can you imagine when he tucks it at goes?
-if its Wabash, you know he is going to get hit, does he finish the game?
-if Wooster beats Wabash, do you hold him out another week?

Not all of those schools were Division III when those guys went there, though, just so you guys know.

BB16-

I'll take a stab at those questions....

- No, he won't be 100%.  The way that break was described I would doubt that his shoulder will ever be 100% again.  Functional, yes.  100%, I don't think so.

- Maybe, but that's a longshot.  If he's held out until Oct. 22, it will have been seven weeks since he's seen game action and he didn't see much game action in week 1.  He might catch on pretty quickly once the game starts, but you can probably bet that there will be some time at the front of the game where he's off.

- It all depends on how much that hit that broke his shoulder is in his head.   I might be a little gun-shy for the first few series after coming back from something like that.

- I think he can finish the game, barring somebody crashing down that shoulder again.  Unlike the Rummell situation, Holmes will still have his feet and be able to move around a little.  I don't think this will be a sitting duck situation.

- Interesting question.  If Wooster beats Wabash and Witt beats Wooster and Wabash beats Witt (presumably in no small part to Fincham holding Holmes out), we get a weird 1997-like tiebreak situation.  I'm not even going to try to figure out who gets the AQ.  The point is that I think Witt can't afford (unless they already know that that tiebreak falls their way) to drop any of their games regardless of who beats who elsewhere around the conference.

Tiger_Alum,

Another fun fact for ya connecting Wooster and Wittenberg.  When the Presbyterian Church sought to found its school, they looked at the Wittenberg campus as a possible site.  Luckily for those of us that went to Wooster, they chose not to.   ;D

Wally,
You know Wabash will put pressure on Holmes if he makes it back for that game.  Plus, I'm not sure Witt can win AT Wabash with a healthy 100% Holmes.  However if Wooster beats Wabash and Wabash beat Witt but Witt beats Wooster wouldn't the "Big Ten" rule come into effect for the AQ and send Wittenburg.

wally_wabash

Wabash will put pressure on Holmes, or Stokes, or whoever they put under center.  That's how Wabash plays...lots of pressure on the qb.  I'm really not sure Wabash's game plan vs. Witt changes much based on who the qb is.

As far as the tiebreak goes, I'm not entirely sure how it works and I'm not going to dig for it because 1) three-way tiebreaks make my head hurt and 2) I don't think we're in emminant jeopardy of having tri-champs.  I don't think this Witt team can go 3-1 against Wab, OWU, Woo, and Gheny.

If Holmes is back, he will be heavily padded up....will that limit his throwing motion?

Now, I know Wabash and whoever else will go after him, but will there be any cheapies???

I don't think Wabash would play like that...

The chance of a cheap shot from a Creighton & Co. coached team is low.  But there would be a very good chance of Holmes being "Lange-a-fied" multiple times during the game.  All legal, but painful all the same.  Some offenses also know this as "Bubba-fied" or "Langed-out"

SaintsFan,

I have never broken my collar bone but I have heard that that is one of the problems with a collar bone injury - there is really no way of wearing extra padding to protect it???

Remember Cornette's (Witt QB) beating he took in the Bash/Witt playoff game???  Was Holmes the backup that year?  He was nailed a couple of times too...

I'll be glad when this weekend is over so we can start on Wabash/Wooster!
