do you remember the name of the QB for Franklin that played?

You mean Chad Rupp - who destroyed Otterbein with about 5 gazillion passing yards?

I meant the QB that played in the red squad game today for Franklin?

Sorry, I don't know.  There weren't any rosters available (that I saw) and I can't keep track of all the names.

He was a big kid and threw a very nice ball, though.  I was impressed.

OK ... just about over my "down in the dumps" over losing that game to Witt.  I just hope we get another chance at them when at full power.

Question ... what, if anything, is the flu season doing to the Wabash and Woo teams this week?  This type stuff simply skews the game in ways it should not.  Hope everyone is healthy.  Now ... if it were DePauw ... but then that is for another day.

Black N' Gold,

Yes, if you just look at the numbers, you would think that Wooster is hitting their receivers consistently. But these numbers are completely skewed by the three games against lousy opponents (OWU, Denison, Earlham). Lets look at the three games against teams that were respectable to great (Waynesburg, Case, Washington).

Against Waynesburg, McCann, who Schmitz described as a an explosive, "big target on the outside" and a "tremendous athlete" had ZERO catches. Against Case, he had two catches for 37 yards, and against Washington he had one catch for 5 yards. Redick and Francesgangelli, who I would consider the other two true wide receivers, have done a little better, but still haven't been enough a part of the offense in my opinion.

It really comes down to whether you think spreading the ball around just for the sake of spreading it around is valuable. What is more important is whether the defense respects your ability to occasionally throw the ball down the field. This is what happened against Case. They figured out that Wooster more or less was looking to throw the ball under 10 yards almost every time. Wabash is going to do the same thing. Wooster has a good enough line to give Holter time to throw down the field. They need to take some chances to loosen up things for the shorter routes, IMHO.

I don't know what your deal is Seinfeld, but you never have anything positive to say about Wooster Football......you only come out and spit on the team when they lose or the game was close. I'm here to keep things positive and point out the good things that Wooster football program has done, not criticize them. This isn't the Ohio State Buckeyes, or Cleveland Browns. These are STUDENT ATHLETES and none of those kids are going to make a living on the football field. I applaud all of the Scots and Coach Schmitz for leading these fine young men on a path to earn a degree and teaching life lessons on and off the field. I'm one of the most competitive guys you will meet, but I won't come on here bashing a team for what they didn't do. I may critize them here and there, but you won't find me bashing them to the ground every week. The Scots are a good team and they keep things interesting on Saturdays and I root for them rain or shine, 30 below, or in the 100 degree heat. They have a huge game this upcoming week, so what is wrong with posting some positive material although you believe it is misleading? You may want to take a note from the Wabash fans. I've never read a post where they single handily stomp on their team. They just lost a huge game where I'm sure they did numerous things wrong......but I haven't read about it yet. Now I'm not saying I disagree with you on your thoughts because Wooster is very close to being special and sometimes it's aggrivating on the decisions they make, but I won't bash them on here. I'm only human just as you are and all the guys on the field spilling their guts to get that ring.

Go Scots!  ;D

And......Good luck to Wabash. :)

smedindy

You take what the other team gives you. Having the confidence to spread the ball around is crucial to a well-balanced offense. Wabash's success in the passing game comes from the fact that Knott, Harbaugh, Hudson, Huff, et. al. had a gazillion choices on the field so defenses couldn't just lock down one target.

If the long pass is covered, throw short and use screens. When those are covered unleash the big one.

Wooster will be a challenge for Wabash. The Little Giants will see what they are made of. I hope they can recover from the tough loss and go on the road and beat a good team. Hopefully, this won't be a 2004 scenario where after a tough 33-30 loss to Wooster, the LG's fell apart. But Saturday's game is the key to the season!

You're right Black N' Gold. I hate Wooster. The over $100,000 dollars I've given to the school between tuition and gifts was just to mess with them. The many years of following the team, traveling and doing other things on my own dime was again out of spite. Thanks for responding to what I said. Oh, wait, that didn't happen. I guess I'll just leave the board for a while, because what I consider insightful comments are not welcome apparently.

Black n Gold

We all have given our money and time to the school....... what's wrong with giving a little support? My response wasn't directed specifically to your most recent, but the fact that it's every single time you are bashing them and are never giving any kind of praise. Say what you want on here, but there aren't many Scot posters so I try to keep the other NCAC teams and what  not updated on Wooster and I try to keep it positive.

wally_wabash

The season is on the line for both of these teams on Saturday.  Wooster, despite the disappointment of two losses, are undefeated in NCAC play and control their own destiny for the championship and a spot in the playoffs.  A loss on Saturday, and Wooster is basically playing out the string (they could still get a co-championship by beating Witt, but the tiebreak scenario doesn't seem to favor the Scots for the AQ).

It's going to take a big effort for Wabash to get in and out of Wooster with a win.  Wabash is in elimination mode now and I hope that these young men play with that back against the wall mentality.  The last two trips to Papp have been vastly different.  In 2005, Wabash went to that Wooster game looking to get their swagger back after a disappointing 2004 season...playing with that kind of purpose, the LGs did things to a Wooster defense that had never been done before (literally...Wabash put more yards on the Scots than anybody ever had to that point in history).  In 2007, Wabash kind of sleepwalked through the game and nearly got beat by a young but game Wooster squad.  If this Saturday's effort more closely resembles the 2007 trip than it does the 2005 trip, Wabash could find themselves out of the NCAC and playoff pictures with a quickness.  I know Wooster will be bringing it...Wabash will need their best road effort of the year on Saturday.

Black N' Gold,

My last comment on this, as this discussion has no real point and no one probably cares. I'm glad you are invested in Wooster, but don't misstate what I've said. I've haven't come close to calling out a single player, and I've mostly just mentioned the coaches in a general sense. I've posted after just three games this year -- after Waynesburg I talked about how good the offense and special teams looked. After Denison I was somewhat critical of the result, but managed to squeeze in a compliment about the freshmen punter. Then I posted after the Wash U. game.

Here is what I said in my long post from the other day that sums up how I view the team:

I don’t want to be negative, but my expectations of Wooster are based strictly on how the coaching staff pitched this team before the season. When you openly talk about making a championship run, then I expect them to play like a championship team. I didn’t have those expectations last season, coming off of a 4-6 showing in 2007, so I was extremely pleased by what happened last year.

While I'm sure Schmitz would disagree with some of my specific strategy or execution critiques, I would be very surprised if he didn't also believe Wooster should be doing better this year. And I doubt he has been telling his team how great they are this week in practice. Instead he is probably telling them to get their ass in gear or the season is over.

seinfeld

To show that I can be positive, you could make the argument that Wooster has the leading candidates for Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year. Now that Hudson is hurt, Holter has to be the frontrunner with his total offensive numbers. But he does have to go against two pretty good defenses, so that may determine how he finishes. Defense is harder to gauge, because a lot is determined by what coaches see on tape. Tackes, sacks, or lack thereof, vary widely based on how much your defense in on the field, among other things. But DeGrand, considering he finished a narrow second last year (and the winner has graduated) has to be right in the hunt. But I would think Wooster would probably have to finish at least second to get both awards.

old wabash

tough loss saturday--does anyone not think Hudson was worth 3 points on saturday--
not to play woulda, coulda, shoulda! it is what it is! but even with talent, changing a key element like qb is a major adjustment that takes time. but now is the time for poasters to armchair qb/coach/analyze till we get more football on saturday. team is already over witt and is focused on woooster.

speaking of wooster enjoying the intra-banter. but where is scotlass the voice of sanity and logic in ncac & woooster?
