I've spent my Saturday evening watching every single monon memory.  Now I'm going to watch them again.  And then I'm going to listen to the Ballad about 5000 times.

I hate you guys.

So, all in all, Depauw had a pretty good year?  Does the interim head coach keep his job?
Can Hollway continue at OWU after this year?

If Wabash wins, pretty likely they are in, right?

Been out of the country.

thanks to formerd3b and others for clarifying dayton rule for me!

did witt clinch aq today?
it appears even if woooster upsets them, the tie would be broken in their favor.
am i interpreting this correctly ?
and why is the front page of d3football.com silent on this?

They'll get to it....

But yes, Wittenberg has clinched the NCAC's automatic bid to the tournament and a share of the conference title.  Wittenberg can claim the conference championship outright by beating Wooster next week.

But the school did not, and that's how the original post could have been read.

This is exactly what I meant.  Sorry for the confusion.  Dayton was generally a University/Division I level school for sports.  That really never changed.  It was only the football program that dropped down to a relatively new Division III level.

At the time, the concept of division levels was still sort of new.  I believe there were a lot of medium-sized schools that floated around in a nebulous state lacking the strict division classification identity that every school has today.  In the 1960s and 1970s, Dayton was playing a schedule full of teams that today would be equivalent to D-IAA/DII (and getting their butts kicked, for the most part, too).  The move to de-emphasize football and drop to DIII was the next logical step, and I don't think it was done with any malicious intent.

I looked at the Dayton Flyers past seasons...and it was 1977 or 1978
when, as a D3 they tied Miami (Ohio) at old Miami Field...10-10.....

Last comments on "the Dayton" situation:

You're welcome old wabash!

aueagle:  Indeed, I recall that as well.  Dayton and Miami went back a long way.

CarrollStreaks:  I may have misunderstood your post as well.  No problem, friend.  I know what you mean about Dayton's last few years at the DI level - for sure they weren't having that much success in the W-L column.  Perhaps that may have changed had they decided to concentrate on improving the program at that level - I think it could have been done.  However, as I recall, their "de-emphasis" on football was not so much the lack of wins (although that obviously played a part), but rather they went into the mode of those previous group of religious (Catholic?) universities had dropped football in years prior to then and/or were doing so about that time as well; Detroit, Marquette, Duquense, Loyala of Chicago, St. Louis, Xavier (OH), Villanova (although the latter brought it back as you know).  Anyway, thanks for the further info.

Congratulations to the Wittenberg Tigers, 2009 NCAC Champs.

Now, it's off to the Monon Bell thread, for the other kittens that are so dear to our hearts  :D

I like this.  For all intents and purposes, you're absolutely right.

That Dick at DPU is real good.  I like Wabash's chances, though.  No fraternity shutdown distractions, the team (and Hudson) have a chance to redeem awful performances last year, and the team knows that a win is a must.  No laurels to rest on.  So I expect Wabash to come out with purpose and precision, and do to DPU what got done to them by DPU last year.

No worries about playing in Greencastle.  The last three times Wabash has regained the Bell, they did so in Greencastle ('91, '01, and '05).  So I expect to add '09 to that list.  Raeburn knows that if he wants to stick around in C'ville, he has to win this game.  This year would be a real good time to start getting into that habit.

First time in my life I'm pumped for DPU.

I will forget that I just read this from you.

Out of context or not...... those words in alignment could shut down the entire grid.

When was the last time Wabash had the chance to beat dpu TWICE in the same season? I get to be jacked. It's allowed.

This is not a football story but a sports story regarding Wooster basketball coach and the tragic death of his son Cory last winter.

This will touch your heart and give a huge thank you to Kent State University.
